The point that tinas (and maxtorque earlier in the thread) made, is that the OEMs spend millions upon millions optimising emissions, fuel economy, and driveability on test rigs and testing the cars in a full range of environments around the world. They have full working knowledge of the software and all the calibration parameters- third party companies simply cannot gain this know how. I wouldn’t let anybody touch my car for this reason alone.

Third party companies who do remaps may increase torque and power, maybe even reduce fuel consumption, but nothing comes for free – emissions will increase as a result. People are outraged at VW for cheating emissions legislation; using a remap which will be far worse is antisocial.

^ I think it’s fair to say that VAG tend to drive their cars when setting their maps, wiv laptops plugged in and everyfink

I’ve flown business on a number of occasions (Emirates and BA) and in my opinion it’s not the luxurious and glamorous experience it is made out to be. It is clearly much more comfy than flying cattle class, but spending several £k to sleep in a crappy small bed, watch a film on a small rubbish screen, and eat food that is clearly still airline food isn’t something that I aspire to. Ok, the booze is ok, but certainly no better than I’d drink at home.

For me, the best compromise is premium economy – a bit of extra space, but not too much extra ££

Personally I’d be wanting substantially more than a fiver or tenner per week. Even if he covers half your fuel bill, he is still not having to splash out on the other running costs of a car. Add in the fact that you lose your peace and quiet, and that he is taking the pee, I would nip it in the bud.

    Plus what Flashy says!

I have a Stihl fs200 2 stroke that is over the top for doing the edges around the lawn, that I probably should sell if you are in the West Midlands

Charlie – 14 gears or not, truck drivers have to adhere to the rules of the road, just as everybody else should. And tailgating somebody at a distance of 2m in a 44t vehicle is incredibly dangerous. In an ideal world, all car drivers would all be able to drive at 70mph on the motorway all of the time, and all truck drivers could do 56mph. Unfortunately traffic is a very real thing, so everybody has to adjust their speed accordingly and maintain a safe braking distance

Bunnyhop – my assumption is that a local company will typically be significantly more expensive than online, so I wouldn’t normally consider a local company on this basis

I just found this thread via another.

Grum, I’ve never met you, but on STW you come across as a really good guy, and I always enjoy seeing your pics.

I hope you are feeling well and recovering from your bike crash!

@ben, yes that’s what we are hoping to do, fully replace with upvc. We have had a couple of quotes that are ball park ok, but via people I wouldn’t trust, and a couple of quotes that are obscenely expensive from companies that you might expect to be reputable. It seems like a minefield.

Minor thread resurrection… for those of you who have had your fascias and soffits replaced, did they also replace the bargeboards too? Also, did they just cap over the existing boards, or remove the old ones and replace?

    Cheers

I spent a day in Dubai whilst in transit to western china last August. The burj khalifa was impressive, and that was about it. The emirates lounge at the airport was pretty crappy too.

In summary – anywhere but Dubai!

For he mk2, the 1.8l is a Mazda I believe. The 1.6 is more or less the same as in the mk1. I would choose the 1.8 as 5th gear is quite short for the 1.6 so it is a bit revvy on the motorway

Have a look on just doors website to get an indicative idea about the price you will need to pay for the windows. Then factor in labour on top of that (£150/day/person?) and you should then have an estimate to guide you price wise.

If you are getting a new golf r, why not go for apple car play/android auto? Then you get to use google maps from your phone on the built in screen on the dash. Seems like a no brainer to me

Negotiate the best deal on the purchase price that you can with the dealer believing you will be taking finance. Take the finance, go home and then pay the finance off in one go over the phone. Dealers make money on finance so you have a better chance of getting a deal if they think they will get commission.

On the current version (mk2?), you don’t remove the middle seat, just fold it backwards, then the outside seats should slide inwards and backwards when you pull a lever

YouTube shows it to be quite simple but the car at the dealer appeared to have all the mechanisms under the seat, but it wouldn’t work on either seat – hence is there a knack to it?

It sounds like houses are cheap in your area, so why not do a bit of research and then discuss it with him? If he can save enough to build a deposit for a 3 bed house, then he could move out and rent a couple of rooms out either to mates or strangers. It would likely work out that his mortgage would then be paid for him, possibility with a little left over to cover bills.

If you can speed this process up by subsidising him, then he will be able to move out sooner. Win-win situation?

£300 is cheap for a stag!

A friend of mine recently commented on me not having a stag do – which I did, but clearly some folk don’t consider a curry and a few beers worthy of the title of stag do!
