The magic mouse no longer swipes back a page.

For some reason they have disabled this by default. If you go into your mouse settings, you can re-enable it

Do you need to back all of your documents up? I’ve set mine installing under the assumption that all my stuff will still be there….

Downloading fine (so far) here – I’ve done 1gb in roughly 10mins.

There was a thing in which magazine recently about the reliabilty and performance of television brands. I can’t remember the specifics but Samsung came out well and if I remember correctly toshiba weren’t so good these days. Might be worth the £1 membership for a month to gain access to their website

+1 for Tony, I was buzzing for weeks after my session with him last year. Top stuff!

Every time I ride now, I can feel what I’m doing wrong and rectify it, I had no clue before!

As above, the sonos system is v good and you can get a receiver that plugs into any amp a bit like a CD player would. In my experience Sonos is very polished and I suspect the best system out there all in all

I’ve tried the raspberry pi and it seemed a little temperamental so I didn’t persevere. I have been using a squeezebox for a couple of years now and it is very good, but I have just changed it for an Apple TV as I like some of the features that you can get from apple. I don’t have a multiroom setup, but I suspect that using the apple systems won’t allow different music in different rooms from a single controller like I believe sonos does

Mail in profile if anybody wants to buy a squeezebox classic!

I used g form in the alps this year and found them to be very comfy, although I didn’t crash enough to call them into action.

Which reminds me, I have an unused pair of gform knee pads that I need to sell. I bought XL and L sizes; the XL fitted best and I never got around to returning the L pair. Email in profile if you are interested ( sorry for thread hijack)

Don’t use a claims company – they don’t add anything. Just follow the advice that Drac posted up.

When we bought our iMac we got it from John Lewis as the price was the same as the Apple store, but you get a free 2 year warranty. If you don’t have a JL nearby, then I believe you can reserve online and collect from your nearest Waitrose store instead (that certainly used to be the case anyhow)

    Cheers

I have some large G Form knee pads in black for sale – unused. I bought a pair of L and XL for my alps trip; the XL fitted best and I never got around to returning the L ones.

Tonyd speaks a lot of sense.

You need to figure out a budget; 500 max then go to a independent with the risk that they may not have all the tools/info available to them that VW would.

If you can afford 1k, then go to a dealer. If not, sell to somebody you won’t feel bad selling a faulty car to; we buy any car etc.

It isn’t unheard of that the physical ECU can cause a problem that causes a false diagnosis; I’d really be looking getting the ECU changed if you can. If you are going to go to the expense of changing the ECU, doing it by a reputable source (i.e. VW) is likely to be your best bet.

You could try swapping your ECU as weeksy suggests, but you may find that there are software routines that match the ECU to the car, so doing this may not work and could muddy the waters further. I’m not 100% sure on this point though; I write the control algorithms and don’t get involved in that type of stuff if I can help it.

As I have said before; I would get the engine problems fixed before spending any time/effort sorting the gearbox problems. You may well find that the slow shifting is due to problems with the engine. I presume that it is the upshifts that are slow? The bit of the upshift which I suspect you are saying is slow will be the time taken for the engine speed to reduce from the speed in the start gear, to the speed of the new gear. This speed reduction is done by the gearbox telling the engine to reduce its torque. If the engine does not / cannot reduce its torque sufficiently, you will get a slow shift. If there is a fault with the engine, then it may restrict the amount of torque reduction that is available to the gearbox. The engine tells the gearbox how much it can reduce the torque (from which it would be able to calculate the ‘shift speed’) so it may be the case that the gearbox has no fault codes, because as far as it is concerned, it is operating within the confines of the parameters available to it.

An ECU change may be the best bet (if you have had a reflash), but I would say that the best people to ensure that you get the correct model ECU and ECU software / calibration would be a VW garage. I’d be surprised if a 3rd party had access to all the detailed info about the spec of your car that VW UK would (although I could be wrong).

I have a lot of experience of the transmission on your car (DQ250), so whilst I’m not claiming to be an expert and to know exactly what is wrong with it whilst sat at my PC, and that I know best, that is my advice to you.

@LemonySam – I’d be very interested in the Edge 200 if you are willing to sell – my email is in my profile.

    Sorry for the hijack

Cannondale F600 with the headshock, circa 2003. Never felt right at the front, until I changed the forks for some rebas which made a big improvement. Had it for years, then I got my full suss, and suddenly enjoyed riding a while lot more.

The bike yard in Leamington is in the town centre, but is quite small. Mike Vaughan in Kenilworth is much more substantial if you want a browse, and they seem like a nice bunch too

Moneyweek always seem to send these ‘end is nigh’ messages, but clearly it never happens. It’s weird as non of these warnings are pushed so hard / at all in the magazine, which always seems relatively measured to me.

Sorry for the hi jack, but has anybody got their media centre able to run sky go/bt sport (which require Microsoft silverlight)? Currently I plug my laptop into the tv to get sky/bt sport, but a media centre that don’t require my laptop would be great.

I recently got a cateye wireless cycle computer off amazon for the road bike. Better than logging mileage on a smart phone and using up battery for a simple function.

I use a £10 pair of waterproof over trousers from Go Outdoors cut down at the knee as waterproof over shorts. They fold up so small that they can just be shoved in the bottom of my camelback and have the advantage that I don’t need to change into new shorts when I get back into my car; my normal shorts are nice and clean and dry underneath.

I’ll be out with the White Room on my own next week; I figure that I’ll be concentrating too hard on not falling off when riding to talk, and the evening meal in the chalet will be a social affair (based on previous chalet holidays to the alps) so it won’t be an issue.

If you have a smart phone you can get Nav mi for free. It holds the maps on the phone so it doesn’t need a constant mobile signal, and the maps for foreign lands are free too. It stopped me buying a separate sat nav.

Definitely Stroud, a superb book. Have you looked at 2nd hand copies on Amazon? Good discounts to be had.

Mine has been great – I’ve made a few small mods (saddles, spds from mountain bike), but nothing major. I spent a little time checking that everything was tight and adjusted correctly (the brakes could have been set up a little better), but the shop was very busy when I bought it as it was during the olympics last summer. I used mine for a 100k ride recently without any problems, it was more comfortable than I expected a road bike to be over that distance.

I’ve got a Canon 600D and it is great. There is now a 650D which isn’t massively different to be honest.

Whatever you get, make sure you get it in time to have a good play with it and understand the basic physics of aperture, shutter speed and ISO, plus the various other camera features before you go off on holiday with it. It will take good photos in point and shoot mode, but if you want to get the most out of it, learning how to use it properly will give much better results.

One piece of advice is that you can get a decent photography book for £10-£15, whereas a magazine will cost ~£5 and be much less useful for a not dissimilar price.

Btw – that deal on GroupOn isn’t that special

The reason for asking is that I have a large 2010 boardman fs, and wanted a table of data so that I can compare it to another bike. I know I could measure it myself, but I figure having tables side by side of both bikes would be the best bet for an initial comparison
