About 5/6 years old now and showing its age. By far the warmest, most comfortable jacket I’ve ever owned. T-shirt and jacket in all but the very coldest of weathers.

Thanks all, I’ve an emissions print out – I suspect with the software problems garages were experiencing last summer I wasn’t handed a certificate. It is however registered online as having a valid certificate.

The For Sale section can be reached by clicking on the For Sale button up there ^^

Ah no, that’s the one I’ve provisionally sold. Just mentioning what a great car it’s been!

Whatever you do don’t buy a Husaberg unless you love spannering… Amazingly powerful and capable bikes, but main bearings every 50 hours etc, broke even my enthusiasm!

I was also rubbish at riding it which didn’t help.

    As above, Pilates is excellent.

Or for all round strength, full range squats (either front or back)

Be as accurate as you can on MFP…

Within your 1,800 kcals, ease up on the carbs (esp. wheat based ones) and take them just before your rides (and a little after). Make the balance up with increased protein/fat intake.

If no change, try 1,700 kcals/day, measured over 1 month.

My Love/Hate singlespeed. Built up from an old, scratched frame to something I’ll never part with. About to try (against all wisdom) an alfine 11 set up.

Oh, and a Calibre Dune. Much, much, more fun that I could imagine from such a bargain purchase.

In replacing the JJs for the bargain Floaters on my Dune, I noticed that the rear hub was really grumbling. Stripped it all down but for the life of me I couldn’t get the bearings out of the freehub. Have I missed a circlip? Any advice greatfully received.

Hearing aid wearer here. I have c50% upper register hearing loss equally in both ears caused by hereditary nerve deafness (my father , his father etc. back into the mists of time were as deaf as posts – mercifully, my two boys’ hearng is fine).

Completely in the ear canal hearing aids are so good and small these days, barely anyone notices I’m wearing them. They do however cost the equivalent of a kidney though. Each.

IMO the best source of advice on supplements is examine.com

It can cause weight gain through water retention as described above, although I suspect the low dosage you are consuming will not have caused your weight gain.

It’s a great supplement for explosive type exercise, so if you’re not doing that sort of thing, I’d change the multivitamin.

    Yay, love them. Al dente.

I suspect though that the spouts we eat nowadays have been hybridised to remove much of the bitterness I remember as a child. I suspect also that the nutritional value has decreased as a result.

Reading through this thread, I’m not sure whether out and out leg strength translates to the trail. I’ve a 2x BW front squat and a 2.5 BW back squat and close to a 3x deadlift, but I’m whooped uphill, on the flat, and just generally everywhere by others…

I think I read above: if you’re not good at something, keep doing it. Great advice; specificity, overload and adaptation are the watchwords.

    Right, hill intervals for me!

Well 9 months later, at lunchtime today I finally managed 80Kg OH squat (slightly more than BW as I seem to have shrunk a bit over the year). Was very chuffed too as I’ve been chasing it for months

A great lift, more so as you’ve been aiming for it for a while.

Is it common to go “backwards”?

Oh yes, but keep at it and drop a few kgs. Like anything it’s all about consistency – I take this to mean if you’ve earmarked 4 days a week training, do 4 days a week, even if you’re not able to lift your programme numbers on a given day. We’re not all full-time athletes.

Why is lifting weights so complicated?

Olympic weightlifting is complicated – it’s a specific sport and more to do with (particularly) speed, mobility and coordination as much as being strong. General weight training isn’t so complicated so long as you learn the proper way to do each movement, do the full range and work on mobility/flexibility. If you get the basics right every time and every rep you’ll build a great foundation on which to build strength, which has all round benefits and not just on the bike.

Anyone recommend something that talks about weight training purely for lean-ness?

I’m 62kg at 165cm and around 11-14% fat (so pretty lean) – I train not for hypertrophy, but strength. Years ago I looked at, and followed, the iDave diet I found on here, lost around two stone and kept it off. It still broadly forms the basis of my diet today.

Well the axle nut arrived in time for my ride on Sunday (thanks Mike @calibrebikes!)

Brakes upgraded now to hydraulic; the 160 rotors are fine. I also had a spare XT 9 speed rear mech, shifer and chain, so that’s on now. Wrapped some inner tube around the cables where they pass the fork – looks OK and hopefully will stop the cable rub there. Changed the bar to a carbon one I had knocking around!

Llandegla Red was great fun, faster in parts than my hardtail… Not too bad uphill but punctured near the end.

    All is good.

Ha – I’m an olympic weightlifter not an Olympic weightlifter…

Too old and not that good 🙂

    bakey
    Full Member

I’m an Olympic weightlifter – as such I’m after strength rather than bulk (we compete in weight classes).

As a beginner, just about anything will work and you’ll see some muscle and strength growth. Key point, I think are: (i) do lots of reps initially to get your form right – there are good exercise videos on Catalyst Athletics (use a camera to compare your form to the web videos (ii) do lots of stretching once you’re warm (iii) try to do more compound exercises rather than single muscle lifts – i.e. full squats, rather than leg extensions; close handed pull-ups rather than bicep curls, (iv) try to use dumbells, barbells or kettlebells rather than machines

As for loading, footflaps explains the rep ranges well. 5×5 works for me, but leading up to a competition more singles, doubles and triples in 3-8 sets for strength.

I’m using Richa Arctic – good value and great reviews. Holding up well, not too bulky and I’m currently using them with my heated grips off.

@calibrebikes – just had an email from Customer Services telling me that they ‘are expecting loads of spares delivered into the Head Office in the next few days’ and asking me to contact them next week.

If you drop me an email, I’ll let you have my address – I ordered the bike to be delivered to the store directly so you may not have my details.

Whilst the above has been a pain, I can’t fault the bike at all. Upgraded now with Elixir R, XT and a carbon bar… 14.8kg. Lovely.

As Suggsey mentioned in a previous post, I’ve lost the axle nut from the front QR skewer. Now you would have thought that this would be a simple matter to resolve, but oh no. There are actually no 15x150mm skewers available in the UK, which are not of the Maxle type variety, and I suspect the Chinese ones on Amazon/eBay are too long (unless anyone can correct me)
GO have been apologetic but not really helpful; I’ll go to another store this evening…
The thread appears to be M15 x 1.5, which is used by absolutely no one apart from bolt manufacturers for car oil sumps and their repair, but no nut. I’ve actually been this morning to an engineering supply house, the chap there just looked at me, shook his head and sucked his teeth.

Any suggestions or do I need to replace the whole flipping fork.

Well, after not riding for nearly 3 years, a month now on Singletrack again, the bug has really struck anew.

Bought one of these Dunes yesterday… a couple of hours round Llandegla this afternoon and I’m still smiling 🙂 Haven’t had as much fun for ages.

The best source of unbiased info on supplements IMO is examine.com

I take D3, Creatine, Omega 3, ZMA, whey protein, leucine and ibuprofen!

I’ve just realised this is the first post I’ve made in over 3 years… I’ve spent the time olympic weightlifting, a sport I did as a teenager (now 52!). I blame Dave’s iDiet (anyone remember?)

I did get out on my love/hate SS last weekend and loved it all over again. What’s all this 1×10, 27.5, 29″, fat bike malarkey that’s happened in my absence? Is 26″ SS as a dodo now?

I completed my MBA in 2000, studying part-time with the Open University Business School. I chose them on two key criteria: (i) accreditation – AMBA being the key one – and, (ii) the ability to tailor the degree towards my specialisms – in my case, finance. The organisation, study cohort and quality of the course was outstanding.

I did it not for the corporate ladder thing, but to enter an industry for which I was only partially qualified. At the time I was working iin a 10 person outfit and even now, in another organisation, there are only 11 of us – so its not all big corp. The learning is applicable across all corporate endeavors, large and small. There were, interestingly, a number of NHS staff on the course I did, and not just NHS managers, but senior nurses and medics too.

For me it was life and career changing (I had to study the hard way, having not been able to go to uni for a first degree) and I was extraordinarily lucky to have been sponsored by my employers.

6 months or so here. I’ve had no problems and I love bacon and egg, chorizo omelette, smoked haddock and poached eggs etc for breakfast!Lunch needs planning – I usually taking in a mixed salad. I do cheat a bit on the beer alas – couple of pints during the week.

I’ve plateaued weight wise, and my long lost abs have made a re-appearance – not bad for an old 48 yo!
