    Hi…

Anyone know what tyre clearance for 650b the older models have?

Specifically I was hoping to run 650b WTB horizons at 47mm on the 2015 SingleSpeed framed Arkose.

Is this a non-starter? The rear looks like it would take them but the fork looks like it might be tight.

If not possible what is the max I can get away with/alternative tyre choice?

    Cheers

This also looks nice, although I know little about it and still has a QR up front:

Anyone had a blast on the on-one space chicken?

I’d be interested to know the exact weights, I have no hands on experience of the Tripster AT but it does have favourable reviews so must be doing something right?

The main reason for a new frame is that I have the SS version of the Arkose with the EBB and although it started life as SS I’m not going back there for this kind of bike, it also has QR forks.

The Arkose is a nice frame but I thought the Tripster AT would handle better on lots of fast landrover track, which is mostly what I’m riding. If they are at a similar level and it’s only the cost of marketing on  the big brands that pushes their frame prices there probably isn’t much point in an upgrade. Where’s the fun in that tho?

Maybe I just need to update my arkose frame ;)

Lighter, really? The forks are pretty heavy and the frame is no skinny super model AFAIK

I thought all that oversized tubing on the AT made I lighter? Be interested to see that thread if anyone can dig it out.

I’m definitely doing more gravel miles than anything else right now but will do some bike packing with it also.

Budget is probably £500 tops. FYI I meant he tripster AT, I realise a Ti frame isn’t really possible on this budget.

+ I’m 5’11 which lands me right in-between M & L usually, which is a plus with the Tripster as they do a M/L at 55.5cm or something

This pesky ‘beast from the east’ I’ve had enough of it now. A load of salt and boiling water at the hottest part of today, 1c or so, seemed to do the trick. I’ve got the fear now again tho as it’s Baltic will leave it until same time tomorrow and try again. Defo sounds like a dodgy connection into the pipe but it’s not a proper soil stack so salting it from the top isn’t an option.

Think I need to cut me a peep hole.

No it’s definitely at the wall at the outlet, it’s not making it back as far as the washing machine and dishwasher connections

    Makes sense – cheers

The bike (genesis day one) originally comes with a 116mm BB maybe that would be better. It’s fixed I was hoping to try out… if not the UN55 are there any other options?

The guy’s sound (I think/hope), he genuinely believed in what he was selling. It will be going back and refund given or my faith in humanity will take a hit (it was paypal’d with fee’s but I’d rather not have to go down the dispute route). I was pretty sure it wasn’t a roller but if it was of a similar STD I would have taken it but it’s not very good to put it mildly…

Was being sold as a surly steamroller – clearly it ain’t

£110 would be a bit steep then right?

Plenty out there with hope hubs, I’m just wondering what sort of rims would work.

Would traditional MTB rims not be too heavy and wide?

Front fork is indeed QR – I was just thinking about buying a pair of total shanners for as little as possible to try it out.

I can send a photo tomorrow if it helps.

Aye, please do – sounds intriguing.

Just DBL checked, it’s got 4 eyelets on the front of the fork.

It’s the rigid on-one fork… It does have some eyelets thought they were for a rack tho… It’s got some new marathon shoes on the now so hopefully that won’t change for a few K’s

I’ve got the bombers and really like them, great confidence and control on gravel where I tend to use them most. However, I’ve found that the drops are quite small, maybe this is because they are so flared, if you like to have your hands quite far back on the drops or move your hands about much they wouldn’t be a good choice, I can only get about two comfy positions on the drops themselves. I’m keeping an eye out for some cow chippers to replace them but they are fine for now.

The event has been cancelled due to the bad weather! Looks like I won’t have to endure the horrors after all – Thanks for all the tips though, I almost want to go do battle with the elements now.

@Pyro – If I start to despair ‘that’ should help to remind me – it could be worse. Good luck with that.

3 days out most sites are pretty reliable, it’s rank for days either side of the event and with the fronts coming off the atlantic… it’s going to be rank. This is my first race… eh, event thing and clearly I have no idea what I’m even doing – so it’s a sportive – got it

I enjoy winter climbing i.e. suffering but it doesn’t hurt to prepare a bit.

As stumpy01 says, entered the race for a bit of fun – wont be pushing it or looking for a good time. There’s a few of us entering, of mixed abilities and fitness so might end up riding slower/waiting. It’s the Galloway Gallop 53 miles, cross/gravel I think and looking at about 5 hours ride time most likely – the course and ground is wet underfoot and I’ll be riding a hard tail. Got a mudguard on the back but only one of those neoprene things u slap on the forks up front & plastic bags over socks

Yea, I saw the Di2 kit for the Hylex that would be the best solution but will probably just get rival throughout – Di2 is way too pricey for me & I’d probably need a new frame too!

Yea not sure I would get on with a bar end shifter, I think I’d prefer the Gevenalle rig.

Might look at the Tanpan solution from wolftooth…

@jakd95 I have seen those but wasn’t sure about them – looks like it might be an odd position for the shifter but I do like the compatibility factor of them.

Darn it – when are shimano going to sort their s&*t out for a good 1×11 road/cx rig

I thought it was odd there was so little clearance too TBH

How much clearance is recommended? If I take off the inner tube it will clear the frame by a baw hair – I guess it only takes the EBB to slip a fraction though and it’s disaster time

I have a 38t that does fit but I’d be a bit gutted to drop the wolth tooth, don’t think there would be an issue if it wasn’t an oval ring.

Trek Crockett is another one with adjustable dropouts

The surly straggler is a good shout, would like to have some carbon fork options though (more choice with a tapered headset) not sure if these other bikes have adjustable dropouts like the Private Jake tho – might have to consider the EBB after all.
