We used to plant it as a cover crop for the pheasants on the shooting estate I worked on.
I spent one summer pulling up a quarter of an acre by hand, my then bosses bullshit job of the month to keep myself and the other under keeper busy while he was on holiday

The pheasants seemed to like it to hide in same for Quinoa the pheasants like the seeds.

I don’t know what they use now but we used to sow acres of the stuff for very little money so some one is making a good killing on this stuff!

    Found a supplier
    http://www.bostonseeds.com/products/12/Game-Cover-Crops/124/Top-10-Best-Selling-Game-Cover-Products/#product765
    Traditional Game Cover Mix
Contains Maize, Red & White Millet, Buckwheat, Kale, Sunflower, White Mustard, Forage Rape, Gold of Pleasure and Phacelia.

you trendy types can grow your own with the above link 10 Kg of seeds will plant an acre!

I’m not on Facebook (everyone else seems to be) hardly ever in the office as I work off site 90% of the time and most of the time I only know when someone is leaving when I’m asked to sign a card!

I’m from a manufacturing back ground and all seems load of bollocks to me, I work to pay the bills that’s it, there collages not my mates I don’t know whether its a sexs thing as 95% of the office is female…..

Anyway they probably all see me as a bit of a dinosaur but I don’t loose any sleep over it. :-)

I do have issue with some of the large shoots here where 100’s of birds are taken purely for sport and then buried

I would love to know where that countryside myth came from.

We used to shoot anything between 30 and 850 bird days.
If the price dropped very low as it used to now and again after Christmas we used to give game to charities local hospices etc etc…

I’ve delivered them myself back in the day, most shot game is delivered to game dealers for sale into the larger markets (export).

Some absolute shite is being talked on here, I not saying it NEVER happens but there was a MASSIVE change in culture in the gamekeeping community in the early ninties.
    I know I was there!
I was taught the old school ways, pole trapping, illegal poisoning etc etc….Then there was some very high profile arrests, a few old school keepers were sent down and things changed much for the better in all cases.

I can only describe it as how drink driving has evolved in our culture.
That is how those old methods have gone. Yup there is still the odd knob as in all society but the main thrust is for the better.

In regards to old foxy I remember one foggy morning turning up to one of my release pen to spend the next 3 hours picking up dead birds I think the total came to around the 380 mark.
Now imagine this you have a big important work project the whole thing comes to around lets say 2000 A4 sheets of paper (no digital back up) then one morning I walk into your office and rip 380 sheets of the project randomly from you folder and throw it into the best paper shredder on the market.
How you feel that morning when you walk into that office is around the same feeling I got picking up those birds.

If your anti your anti it’s your point of view and I respect that, just as you should respect other people enjoy doing other sporting interests.

    Hi rone,
For video I love the GH4 the form factor love the lenses I’m fortunate enough to have an uncle who used to be in the trade and over the years gathered a nice collection of Leica glass.

I cannot personally see any difference between between the Panasonic f2.8 glass and the Leica stuff I tested it against.

For stills (I think I maybe one of the few person who actually uses the GH4 for stills as well) It’s ok ISO wise I compare it to the Canon DIGIC 4 sensor.
For shooting stills in sport the lag in the view finder is a bitch, I could never use it professionally for stills of fast live action.

Overall it’s a great camera for video not the best for stills but its a compromise I made in not lugging two camera systems around with me. :-)

If I’m out of anything for breakfast (or running late) I’ll call in at a Sainsburys near work of a co-op on the way and get some oat/flapjack type cookies.
Grab a pack and eat them as I check emails with morning brew, tend to sort me out.
Oh and I’ll eat the full bag :D

Main camera is a Panasonic GH4 with 12-35 and 35-100 f2.8 Panasonic lenses plus an old Canon FD 300mm F2.8 Telephoto lens I use with a metabones adapter and the GH4 for wildlife/sports, sharpest lens I’ve ever used btw.

An old Panasonic DMC-LX5 that i used to use on radio controlled planes and helicopters (Pre DJI days)when you actually had to know how to fly stuff to get a camera in the air.

    Two Hero 2’s

    Prior to the GH4 shot Canon for years Canon T70, T90 pre-Digital. Post digital 300D, 20D, 40D 7D and 7d Mark II.
Also used to have a Mamiya 645, plus winder and a few lenses.
    Also Video cameras Canon XM1, XL1, XL1s and XL2

    Errm ok
Well here is my point of view
We use agency staff and I run the teams (one of many of my jobs).

Had a Romanian girl working for me in Feb and she was shit hot, hard working, reliable and honest.
We have just had another pile of work where we require agency staff it took me 3 weeks to get her back she was shocked I’d been asking the agency for weeks for her.
Once again her work it top of the pile, cannot fault her if I could I get my boss to take her on full time contract, I would.

I’ve a Slovakia lad who pretty much works with me full time, at home he was a school teacher, teaching History. Secondary School.

He as been working with me for 7 months, once again great guy honest hard working reliable. I had to UK nationals before him one lasted 2 weeks one lasted 1 month both were shit, lazy and unreliable.

My mate and me have 1 camping/biking weekend a year and we love it.

Beer in the stream all day out for ride back showered (in the cleanest shower block you have ever encountered) to the tent sit and drink said beer, casual walk to the pub mingle with the other campers, walkers bikers drink more beer nice meal drink more beer then bed and ride the next day and repeat.

Last year we got back were sat outside the tents and there was a young teenage couple struggling to get a throw away BBQ going for something to eat give them a couple of beers got chatting and they were saying how they could not afford B&B’s, hotels and just wanted some time with each other away from family homes.
Felt sorry for them, me and my mate give them some cash and told them to get something decent to eat at the local pub. :-)

You meet all sorts and most people are really friendly. the camp site we go to has a backpackers field (we say on) and the other section is full of the big family tents loads of kids ruining round and is pretty busy.

I’ve hear horror stories of a couple of big sites in the lakes I would not go near with a barge pole though noise full of pissed up groups teenagers causing bother.

I really don’t like this, when your in a que into a venue to me it feels a bit black maily as (to me anyway, I feel a guilty if I don’t do it) with people directly behind me.

The first time I had it I paid the extra after that I now don’t as most of the places I’ve been too that use it are already charging a decent amount just to get in. And I’ll always get food drink etc while I’m in the venue which in general have a decent markup on so they get more out of me anyway than just entry.

An while we are on about charities (sorry OP) if there so concerned about the thing they support. Why do the people at the top take 6 figure sums out of it as pay? EG if there THAT concerned how about a taking £30K a year so the other £70K can go to the people /thing they are trying to help.
Don’t get me started on Celebs persuading people to give they really boil my piss.

    Once again sorry OP :-)

    UrbanHiker,
no you need to keep all your receipts for upto 5 years from what I remember.
    3 Line accounts is

    Receipts (costs)
    Invoices (jobs)
Profit/Loss (jobs – costs) (In its most basic form).

    Kind regards

One of these CK Fencing Pliers was my first proper tool I bought when I was gamekeeping. I was on £50.00 a week and these even then cost me £23.00 but still in the tool box today and deliver whenever they are used.

Mine look alot more worn than the image though! :D

OP, you don’t really need anything more than three line accounts tbh.

I ran a side line photographic business for a few years read a book / web site on what you can/can’t claim against (small business book) will do.

Keep you books straight as an arrow and it’s easy. just don’t wait to work out your tax / receipts until the night before the deadline of getting the numbers in (you only do that once) lol

    File for subject invoices (costs)
    File for Jobs (Invoices)

For your first couple of years apply for NI exception as your paying plenty of NI in your employed role until your earning number XXXX you will not have to pay NI on your side business earnings.

Have fun, eventually I got sick of working constantly either for my employer or the business and sacked it off BTW I now have free time again to ride bikes and things. You have been warned. :-)

Sorry to hear about that OP I’d have rang plod.

I was asked once to take photos of a flyball training session (dogs) in Heaton Park (Greater Manchester).

I was in the park out side the training area with a longish lens. Started shooting a woman came across and asked what I was doing I told her I was asked to take photos of the dogs by a member of her club she told me I can’t do that as it’s like taking photos of kids!!! 8O

I told her I could, next min her and her mate came across and stood in the training area directly in front of me. I moved they moved.

I went home next day their club member rang me asked how I’d got on had I got many of her dog etc..
I explained the situation and they could not believe it themselves.I told them I would not be back. Ever.

And just for the keyboard warriors here you can take a photo of ANYONE in a public place so long as you do not use the photo for commercial gain (as you would need a model release).

An no one except the courts (with a court order) can have you photos deleted not even the police.

I started in a new relationship at the beginning of the year after a month it started.

    “Who’s that texting you?”
“Who are you going out with on the bike?”
“Why did you wear your new jacket to go shopping?” (I kid you not)

Me “I’m just nipping to my brother dropping a birthday card off”
    Me “Whats up?”

Her “Why don’t you want us to come with you are you ashamed of us/don’t want your brother to meet us?”
(I’d offered several times for us to go but she was always busy)

Me “No its just I’m nipping there and back”
Her “I don’t want you to go”

What followed was a short row and I finished it.

I don’t get how people think they can control you, never dream of doing it to anyone myself.

for small fur/feather go for 22lr if your after foxes then you’ll want .222 or .223 center fire.

    I’d go for a couple of .22lr rifles (1 x bolt 1 x semi-auto) and a .222/.223
If your ground is not passed for center fire go for a 22WMR

6 1/2 hours last night (into this morning) for my partner was taken in by the paramedics from work.
So was seen immediately but then the wait was a killer no docs apparently as they were all tied up with super urgent trauma stuff.

I’d been in since 2am was told at 7 am it maybe another 5 hours! My partner was very close to walking out! As she was feeling more ill just waiting around, eventually got out at 8.30 am not a fun night.
