Mark etc were right to reopen it.
Threads like this should be positively encouraged and this one has loads of miles left in it. Not sure why but I love seeing people with senior positions who should know better behave completely inappropriately. Brilliant.
    Loving the wiki page too.

You may well be doing all that you can in that case. Domestic properties are not easy places to reduce energy consumption. I’d say just minimise washing machine use, check your refrigerator/freezer door (check seals, turn the thermostat as high as you dare, gas charge and wipe condenser coil), ensure good light switch discipline.

I quite like edukators idea of limiting electrical supplies.
I also think that only “A” rated (or better) appliances should be allowed on the market.

As a rule, anything which uses electricity to heat (immersion heaters, electric ovens, washing machines, tumble driers) are going to be very energy intensive. IT kit (PCs etc) can also be energy heavy.
Pop some sub meters on your electrical circuits (might costs a few bob) and see what’s using what. It’s very difficult to reduce what you can’t measure.

I’ve had K18s and now have 09 the ones (which have been flawless). I’ve also ridden/owned; Hope tech M4s, Avid Elixirs and Avid Juicy.
The tech M4s had the nicest feel, the ones are (by far) the most powerful and the Jucies were just dreadful all around. the elixirs were OK.
Padlife with the ones has been fine in the welsh grit with superstar sintered. The stock organics only just lasted 1 ride though.

Though that is also info I have gained from my years of living.

    Classic! PWNED
Also, funny that a 16 year old is calling grown adults “softies”

The only thing is, I was a little bit naked

Never let nudity get in the way. Well done that man.

need for a 6″ + travel all mountain bike for riding 90% of the stuff in the UK just extra weight for no added benefit

Since when did “need” have anything to do with it?
People don’t have to justify their bikes to anyone.
I like seeing people having fun on the hills (trailcentre or not) and could not GAF what bike they’re riding.

To live by a huge lake surrounded by huge mountains in BC.
Even though I still earn a relatively modest salary (compared with stoner etc), I’m so used to having f*** all that I feel like a popstar! In reality, I’m positively overjoyed not to be living hand to mouth as I did for so long.

Red – climbs about red level & decents are ace – not that much harder than the Afan trails.

I think that the afan trails are more challenging than the brechfa red. It’s all smooth, whereas at least afan has some slightly rocky bits.

Do you need a 10 speed specific chain ring?

Thanks njee, good info. I have an unorthodox front mech mounting (stub) so will have to do some research into what I can and can’t use.
Swede, glad to hear a real experience and that it’s positive. I won’t be going with as big a chainring as you though!

Thinking of 1 x 10 with a 11 – 36 cassette. Am I right in thinking I’d need a chain guide? If so, would I need a certain type? Any recommendations? also, would a GS type rear mech be suitable? Sorry for the hijack BTW!

If you go late in the evening you can ride it backwards…

    Now that’s got me thinking……
As a bristol local, I’d say that cwmcarn is very much worth the drive (and bridge toll) compared to ashton court.

    The information is out there.
I don’t disagree with the theory, energy with no pollution is good; it’s the practice and the fact that they deliver such a miniscule amount of energy, which is criminally (IME) overestimated by manufacturers. I don’t disagree with them on looks/location either but I am aware that off shore wind farms are very expensive and difficult to maintain.

Reducing consumption is a massive part of it.

Absolutely. The amount we waste is staggering.
Retail is one culprit, showy sales lighting (often left on overnight), AC blowing with doors wide open.
Do we need 100A supplies into our houses?

Ok so my units weren’t up to scratch admittedly.
The point still stands that 2 off 30m WTs produce a maximum 12kWh per day or 0.5kW. They have only done this a few days this year and the energy produced is often nothing.

Anyway, aren’t we missing the point?!? Wind turbines are rubbish because of something some guy said down the pub, and a bunch of dubious cherry-picked reports. Instead we should be using other forms of renewable energy that haven’t got past development instead.

Attitudes like this, who believe whatever the WT manufacturers and govt tells them need to be informed of the real limitations and failures of wind technology which are currently being found out worldwide although not widely reported due to embarrasment.

    there’s no difference
the energy used is 100 watt hours
The lamp will use 60W per hour
**** hell maybe I’m not great at putting my point into written form, you know what I meant. We’re talking about energy which we can use. I could jump all over your posts if I had to and your lack of understanding of ENERGY.
Well done for the tag BTW. very constructive.

For example, when a light bulb with a power rating of 100W is turned on for one hour, the energy used is 100 watt hours (W·h

A 60W bulb uses 60W all the time it’s on. You can leave it on for a year if you like, it’s a 60W bulb. Leave it on or one hour it’ll use 60Wh.

LOL. The lamp will use 60W per hour. In 2 hours, it’ll use 120Wh.

I’d read that as Germany is getting 8% of its electrical energy from wind turbines, which sounds about right.

Sorry, you read it wrong. It’s 8% of the installed capacity of the WTs.
So, for example a 100kW WT delivering 8kW. This is low, the production ratio is normally 13-26%, although sometimes nothing.
The WT farm by afan consumed energy over the cold snap due to the heating systems to stop them freezing (so I’m informed). WTs also have energy supplies to start them (or did) and require massive infrastructure installations.

KWh is the amount of energy is generated (or used). KW/h is the rate of change of power generation; eg, it a power station was generating 5KW, and an hour later it was generating 15KW, it’d have ramped up at a rate of 10KW/h.

    Good googling.
kWh is kW (power) used per hour (time).
Your example shows that the plant has increased by 10kW per 1 hour = 10kWh.

    backhander
    Free Member

    Rated capacity.
kWh is KiloWatts Per 1 Hour. if a water heater had a 4.5 kW heating element, that ran for 1 hour (60 minutes, or 3600 seconds) it would consume 4.5 kWh of energy. If it ran for 2 hours, it would consume 9kWh of energy etc.

    backhander

Not the question mol, in rated capacity how long should the WT take to deliver 10kW? or a heater? or a motor?
Rated power is per hour, so if you have a 10kW motor it is rated to deliver 10kW or power in 1 hour. 10kW x 1hr = 10kWh. As it’s the same number, the h is often dropped. If I turn that 10kW motor off for 10 hours, I will save 100kWh.

    What? In context;

Presumably you mean 12kWh per day or an average of 0.5kW

So, according to your presumption you’ll get 0.5kW in what amount of time? (seeing as you’ve stated units in power, not energy).
In rated power generation, how long would you expect a 10kW turbine to be capable of delinvering its 10kW?
Or is the h not written as it’s assumed that people know this?
