I got to get out for the day today on mine with its minor upgrades. (brakes, 1×11 sxl with sunrace 11-46 but keeping the original cranks, respray (£55+VAT for frame and forks))

    Here she is:

    I like cranks:

    She can fly!

All in all the bike feels and looks fantastic now. Feels like a higher end bike rather than a sub £500 one. great fun day with lots of smiles and chat from old Belgians.

The brakes transform the bike, the gears are nice too, but perhaps less important to change to be honest. I am not wanting for gears with the 11-46 and 30t front though.

I think the only thing i should do is change the tyres (£100 from atheleteshop) and go tubeless (a bloody pain in the arse by the sounds of things) which would save me 40-50 watts of drag if this http://www.bicyclerollingresistance.com/fat-bike-reviews is to be believed (see also his new fatbike tubeless comparison! http://www.bicyclerollingresistance.com/specials/fat-bike-tubeless-vs-tubes

I’m still sub £800. It is an amazing bike for the money. what a frame. By the way, i am just off 6 foot and needed to get a longer seat tube and stem (for almost nothing from Planet-X) – it’s very comfortable for me now.

thanks for that! i get 114 links only, including the connector, so there’s the problem.

Looking at the link you posted you can get the 114 or 118 version. I think bike-discount should replace it for me to be honest. If they sell you a bundle, the should give you a chain that will work with the 11-46 they are selling you.

i might pop down to my friendly local bike dealer tomorrow and see if they will give me a four off-cuts and a pin. (or i could just run it with two ‘missing links’

exciting friday night this – counting chain links. maybe i need to get out more?

maybe kmc provide a few more links as standard? mine are both sram. if you can be bothered, could you count how many links you have?

update part 2: my other chain (that came with the 1X11 NX bundle i was planning to use on my other bike) is also too short. I wrap it round the big cog and the 30t and it will just touch, but with no overlap (i’m looking for about an inch)

conclusion: dune 30T x 11-46 will not fit a standard chain length. (unless i am being an idiot somehow, which is pretty likely.)

my plan: either get a longer chain (or another couple of links and a pin?) or put the nx 11X42 on for now.

update: chain I bought with my 1×11 bundle was too short! i measured it, seemed pretty close, so I put it on without shortening it at all, and it goes weird and clunky on the 46 tooth cog – too short! damn it! I’ve written to bike-disount and told them to send me another chain of a reasonable length pronto. (not sure if they will though…)

    more exciting news to follow…..

cool, cheers guys! i’m going to go with snakeskin i guess as it is more tear resistant, and ‘easy tubeless’ and only about 100g more per tyre.

would love to meet up for a fatbike ride, but i’m over in Belgium unfortunately.

northwind – quick question. Am I right in thinking you had no problems with JJ 4.8s on you Dune, set up 1×11? If yes, how close was it? I ask because I am about to get some cheap JJs from Athleteshop and i would like to get 2×4.8s, but I think my chainline might be a bit tighter than your as I am keeping the original cranks (with a raceface 30t where the old small chainring was). If it’s close I might run a 4.8 on the front and a 4.4 on the back.

    Cheers!

photos of the finished bike soon.

Latest news: My rear disc break bosses are just too close together to fit my new shimano hydro callipers. i assume it is just that the Dune is not made to very high spec…

I’ll be taking a dremmel to the callipers this evening. Wish me luck.

got mine back from the powder-coater. invisible weld mended the rip in the chain stay.

looks great in person. headset back in. original BB back in, with two spacers (one for the front mech holder, one for the spacer that was there.)

    more updates as they come…

sram make fatbike cranks too. i don’t suppose they are as good as the raceface ones, but they are cheaper (€99 including the 30t chain ring.)

    https://www.bike24.com/1.php?content=8;product=129224;menu=1000,2,88;mid%5B70%5D=1;orderby=2

not certain that they fit though. i did do the research and posted it up on page 39 of this thread and i looked at offsets and things and it looks as if the NX cranks would fit fine.

meanwhile i just bought a 30t wide-narrow chain-ring for mine and i will use it with the Lasco which is fine, if a little heavy. (bloody heavy)

For the back end this 1×11 upgrade kit is pretty good value (€139): https://www.bike-components.de/en/SRAM/NX-1×11-fach-Upgrade-Kit-p48765/

or this if you prefer SLX (€159):

    https://www.bike-components.de/en/Shimano/SLX-1×11-speed-Upgrade-Kit-2017-Model-p50818/

but i went for the sunrace 11-46, (much lighter than the NX and with the extra teeth!) with this kit from bike discount de (€168):

    SunRace MX8 11-speed Cassette 11-46: €66,04
    Shimano SLX 11-speed Rear Derailleur RD-M7000 GS Shadow+: €53,79
Shimano SLX 11-speed Rapidfire PLUS SL-M7000 right: €30,40
    KMC X11-93 Chain 11-speed (BULK-Package): €18,25

Not quite in budget, but DAMN good value: https://www.canyon.com/en-be/factory-outlet/#category=mtb-bikes&sort=price&order=1&id=20880

Meanwhile my Dune is on the way back from the welder (to fix my chain-stay) and has been painted in the mean-time (price for strip of frame and forks, shot-blast, repair and powder-coat: £90 including VAT.

The colour is emerald green, i will show you when it arrives.

Bits to put on: suntour 11-46 cassette, slx shifter and mech. hyro breaks. can’t wait to get it back on the road. board with my old 26er.

Nice one fatty500! Did you put the stickers on yourself afterwards?

I think I am going to go with the RAL2000 suggested above, although my wife thinks green is the way ahead, as shown below:

Cheers Jim. You know what, I might just go with that ral 2000 – looks great. They say this “We then mask it, making sure the bottom bracket housing, seat post area and brake system stubs are clear of paint.” So I’m not worried…..

so, now i need to chose a new colour for my dune! I am going with Solent Powder Finishers (http://www.solentpowderfinishers.co.uk/bikes-home/bike-frames/) – it’s £55 +vat to strip it, shot blast it, prep it, and powder coat the forks and frame. All i have to do is take the bits off first. The colour options are the RAL colours here: http://www.solentpowderfinishers.co.uk/ral-colours/

i’m thinking some sort of green, to go with the rim strips, but it will make it look like an army off-road vehicle, so i am open to orange or red suggestions too.

in other news – paint stripper is not what it used to be due to new environmental formulation. Dune is well painted and getting it all off is a bloody pain in the arse. all those posts about stripping bike frames in an hour, pre-2013 no longer apply!

after some not insignificant hours of stripping and sanding, mine will be going to the sand blaster and then for a powder-coating (£55 all in in Southampton for frame and forks)

watch this space for an matt-orange Dune in the near future folks!

done. I bought the lot from bike-discount. The nx set is going on my kona unit (which i am converting to a geared bike to use a second bike for my mates when they come to visit me in France.)

that’s basically what i am doing, but with an NX 1×11 upgrade kit (only 11-42) Bit heavier, bit cheaper.

Out of interest: did you just pull out the front mech and put it all back together, or did you need to put a spacer of some sort in?

Hmmm – looking at it I can get your set up but with SLX (not including the 30t ring) for €175 delivered vs €145 for the NX. I might swap…

i thought 1x was all a bit pointless and stupid untill i lent my mate my new fatbike recently and he changed the front gear on a hill, got chain suck, and pretty much destroyed the aluminium chainstay/frame. My message: if you are ever going to lend a mt bike to an inexperienced cyclist – remove the front mech.

Meanwhile, some people just remove the front mech and run the bike as a 1×10 or 1×11, but keeping two rings up front, and then if they really need to change the front, they do it by hand. (i.e. one ring for day trips, another for loaded touring.)

best tyres i ever bought are schwalbe Marathon Supreme. Light, very fast, good for what you describe, never punctured. Extremely expensive – but worth it in my view. Amazingly low rolling resistance.

so, i found out. the seatpost is 350mm. I’ve bought a new one along with my fatbike rack. Feedback will follow after Christmas when i pick it up in the UK.

Usually 30t and below includes an inbuilt spacer one side to get around this on a 104bcd no?

yes, it does – it should be alright for the intended 11 speed chain, it just looked a bit tight when i wrapped the stock chain around it.

meanwhile i think with the 25% off sale these racks are looking good value:

    http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/BAJOAPR/jobsworth-disc-brake-compatible-adjustable-pannier-rack

Meanwhile – does anyone kn ow how long the Dune seat-post is? I want to order a longer one now, while i order this rack, but i am at work, so can’t measure it…

looks fantastic smith! I don’t think you will be disappointed.

Meanwhile in Dune news, some things you already knew if you have read the thread:

    – the cranks and bb are heavy (as pointed out many times) – 1.1kg to be precise. That means if you went with an upgrade (slx or nx could be had for €110 + BB) you would be looking at saving 350g+)

    – I changed the stock cassette for an NX 1×11. The NX weighs in at a storming 550g, which is exactly the same as the weight of the existing cassette (aprox 330g) + the front derailleur (aprox 220g) together (i.e. I will only be saving around 180g from the front shifter and cable by going 1×11) (not that i am trying to save weight – i just thought you might be interested.)

    – i am keeping the heavy front cranks for now, and have put my race face narrow-wide 30t ring on it, and pulled off the other two soft damged ones. Note: the 30t ring is smaller than that crank spokes, so there is very little room for the chain to fit in between the teeth of the ring and the spokes of the crank. I may have to add some washers to create a little more space, but probably not, with the thinner 11 speed chain. I let those of you thinking of the minimalist 1×11 conversion know when i put the bike back together.

what have you done MikeG? (and if you ever hear of a Bluto for that money again – let me know!!)

meanwhile – bloody hell this BB is in tight. Just got the non-drie side off (normal threaded) and i am trying to get the drive side off (backwards i.e. clockwise – right?) It’s as tight as a nun’s nasty!
