or that the scientific data is not what the manufacturers want you to see.

but surely if they were faster the roadie companies would make them, afterall speed is king in the lycra world

    truth ^^^

    @thisisnotaspoon
i don’t buy the whole moulton argument the uci rules state that wheels can be as small as 20.5″ including tyres if the smaller wheels were faster the pro tour teams would be using them especially the likes of sky with their love of “marginal gains”

no one seems to have mentioned the mental aspect, i don’t know about you but i usually know what gear i like to be in for different climbs and stick to it, could be that subconsciously you know you can push 32×25 gearing up a certain hill so did the same on both bikes with the slight change in speed being due to the wheel diameter being bigger.
without a powertap its impossible to know.
i have a strong suspicion that powertaps have been used on different wheel sizes but the data not published because there was bugger all difference, more speed for a given power output would be a marketing mans dream there’s no way they wouldn’t use it.

not really, most people use bigger tyres so they can run lower pressures without risking smashing rims up.

10 29ers at afan must be some kind of record, i live local to the place and ride there quite often, the only time ive seen more than 3 29ers in one day was when the flat lander’s invaded to do the gravity enduro.
don’t know what its like in other parts of the country but in south wales 29″ wheels seem to be for the hardcore xc types and beginner’s

looking at the designs of some 650b frames i’ve seen the mud clearance thing is a common problem, most seem to be 26″ frames with the chain/seatstay braces moved about 5mm.

fox 26 forks don’t clear 650b tyres anymore they changed the shape of the fork bridge to make it “stiffer” and it now has much less clearace.
coincidence? i think not, just more proof that its all about making existing parts redundant so they can sell you the new parts.

yep super weak that plastic malarky 🙄

carbon frames stopped being fragile when strength was made the priority rather than light weight.

i wouldn’t worry about it too much outside the lycra XC world and the surrey “hills” 29ers are still about as common as the lochness monster.

contrary to what the magazines claim and clown bike evangelists believe conventional sized wheels still outsell 29ers by a very large margin.

recent riding buddies new bikes include

    intense carbine 26
    enduro evo 26
    canyon strive 26
    canyon nerve 26
and theres a five inbound too.

of course they are longer, longer wheel bases + 3″ in extra wheel diameter to add.

you did it wrong its extremely easy to batter someone while they are in or trying to get out of a car, every time i see these threads i’m amazed how passive you people seem to be, if some one is trying to get out of their car they’re doing it to have a go at you so retaliate in advance. oh and a top tip, if the opportunity arises grab the keys out of the ignition and throw them in a bush/pond/drain etc. to lessen the chance of vanquished foe trying to run you over a few miles down the road.

i stopped reading the pink bike review of the 29er enduro as soon as they stated how fast it rolled across the carpark compared to the 26″ version 🙄

the idea for 650b wheels is simply there because manufacturers know that 29″ wheels are not very practical for the more gravity assisted types of riding, they do however like the way that bigger wheels render all your current forks, wheels, frames, tyres etc useless.
the logical choice was to come up with a wheel size that still renders most of you existing parts useless but is almost impossible to tell apart from a 26″ wheel for most riders and doesn’t have the same physical and engineering limitations as the true wagon wheelers.

super rocky to the point of it getting tiresome was my feeling, never ridden a trail with so little reward for the climbing (except cwmcarn), there were 2 decent sections about a third of the way in and a couple of fun bits near the end but the rest was just lots of riding over rocks and through puddles.

2 days too late for our trip to north wales, rode penmachno instead, what an utterly joyless trail, the only place i’ve been where you climb on singletrack to descend on fire roads, only 1.5 of the 20 miles are enjoyable.

but are the bars the same height as the seat? this is the all important measurement when considering bike geometry as is sitting on the bike in a shop.

canyon strive, giant glory, sx trail, ribble sportive carbon roadie. and none of them have the seat the same height as the bars, how on earth have i managed to ride all these years.

i’ve got the 2013 strive AL8, its a great bit of kit, it does need the volume reducers if your more than 13st as it does blow through travel a bit. i’d have no problem recommending a strive to anyone.
