If you get the right size, the Aussie Grit ones are £24 delivered with the discount code save50

what does ‘if you get the right size’ mean? Is their sizing not accurate?

What’s the fit like? I could use a new Gilet for mtb but don’t want it super fitted.

My experience of any sort of clothing direct from China has been dire. Crap quality and sizing way off.

Galibier.cc stuff is reasonably priced, good quality and you can swap it out if it doesn’t fit. Likely cheaper in the long run.

We’ve got a few – pretty much all the rooms we listen to radio have DAB. Theres a mono white plastic Pure that had a ‘soft touch’ finish that went sticky and is now impossible to clean.

The Tivoli that’s in the bedroom (and one in the bathroom) look and sound great.
There’s DAB on the Yamaha amp in Kitchen. We had an Alexa for a year but unplugged it when we went on holiday and never bothered plugging it back in.

For me the advantage of DAB is, usually, press one button to get what you want to listen to. No flaky voice commands, no faffing with your phone. On. Off. It’s also near enough in sync if it’s on in multiple rooms.

Reception obviously depends where you are. There’s an external aerial that’s connected to some of them but some work without even the rod aerial extended (and DAB has always been rock solid in the car for me way beyond mobile coverage areas).

Boy. This is an earlier Taika Waititi film

is it on one of the streaming services?

We’ve watched a few things on Neflix/Prime in the last week that I’d recommend –
    – Fighting with my family. Entertaining, easy going true story. Stephen Merchant wrote, Nick Frost.

Snowpiercer – Boon Jong-ho English language allegorical sci-fi based on a graphc novel from 2013. (on Netflix).

Also bought the BluRay of Life Aquatic as it amuses me more every time I see it. Lady bird is on the list to rewatch.

Surely then your fork would be under-sprung by the end of the run?

It’s not the air spring that your equalising = – just the unpressurised parts of the fork. I *think* the impact of these being slight above outside pressure is to make the dust seals tight and stiction high.

Can anyone explain how the excess air get in, in the first place. How if it squeezes past the seals can it not squeeze back out then ?

The video and text on the front page explain it’s due to changes in atmospheric pressure – if you take your bike from the bottom of the valley to the top of a high mountain the air pressure outside the fork is lower than inside. Effectively the inside of the fork is pressurised.

We’ve had a Weber Q for years. Yes, you don’t get the full flavour you get from a charcoal barbecue but it’s also no effort to fire it up to cook a couple of steaks on a Sunday night with no mess or smell in the house (and cook them better than you’d manage on the hob or grill).

Those big American style barbecues are all absolutely huge – how many people are you actually going to entertain for? The mid size Weber Q will cook a lot of food and if you’ve got the space why not add a charcoal grill for the times you do have a really big group and it’s worth lighting wood.

Zipvit were amazing value – I tracked down where they were made and couldn’t source similar shorts from the same manufacturer for anything like the price Zipvit were charging.

I’ll be trying https://galibier.cc/shorts-tights-suits/ when I next need some. Everything I’ve had from them has been great quality and value.

We have two principal recommendations: 1) everyone should immediately begin wearing cloth masks in public, 2) The govt. should immediately use all available means to increase the supply of medical masks, especially by heavily rewarding producers.
The basis for our recommendation is simple: anything that combats the spread of the virus is absurdly valuable due to the resulting reduction in mortality risk (not to mention accelerating resumption of normal economic activity).
We have very good evidence that universal adoption of cloth masks will combat the spread of the virus. Specifically, we know that 1) asymptomatic people spread the virus, 2) mask wearing by infected people prevents them from transmitting the virus (the report provides citations).
How large are the benefits? Even if masks reduce transmission probabilities by only 10% (and as you’ll see, that is likely very conservative), the value of *each cloth mask* is between $3,000 and $6,000. Our best estimate is that their protective value is closer to 40-50%.
These estimates are of course sensitive to the assumptions made in the underlying epidemiological models. But even if those models overstate mortality risk by a factor of TEN, each cloth mask *conservatively* generates $300 in value!
So we must urgently promote universal cloth mask adoption. Why cloth masks? Because there is one policy with *even larger* benefits at the current moment than the average person wearing masks.
That policy is getting more medical masks to healthcare workers. The same economic argument that says that masks for the average person are worth thousands of dollars suggests that each N95 respirator for a healthcare worker could be worth *millions* of dollars (report says why).
This is not just us making up numbers to say something is important – in a pandemic situation, it is possible that each medical mask for a healthcare worker saves a life in expectation by containing the spread of the virus. So donate your medical masks today!
If recommending that everyone wear masks resulted in medical personnel being unable to get medical masks, even in the short term, this would be a serious problem.
This is why we recommend universal adoption of *cloth masks*, at least until there is no (domestic or global) shortage of medical masks for healthcare workers. Homemade cloth masks do not interfere with the production of medical masks.

It’s a case of wearing the correct kind of mask and using it properly. IMO best to be left to the professionals.

On a positive note masks may help you to reduce facial touching however:
    -They may increase it.
-They have to be the right type.
    -They have to available.

I’ve always been very dubious about public use of masks. From what I’ve seen of other peopel wearing them, they continually fiddle with them.

HOWEVER, my reading of the latest advice, and the whole basis of mask wearing in Asian countries, is NOT that they stop you getting the virus but that they reduce your transmission of it WHEN YOU’VE GOT IT. In the same way as the best advice I’ve heard on social distancing is to behave as if you’re already sick, the impact of public mask wearing is to reduce transmission by carriers showing no symptoms.

For that purpose anything will work – it doesn’t need to be a fancy medical grade mask. A homemade fabric mask, scarf, or buff would be just as effective. The aim is to stop you spreading droplets when you cough.

So, latest advice seems to be
    – leave medical masks for medics
    – wear anything you can over your face

I’ve serviced loads of Time pedals in the past

What are you guys doing to them? I’ve ridden Time pedals for c20 years (Katies’ hack bike still has a set of original times welded to the cranks from that time) and I’ve never replaced a bearing in them. I’ve written them off by bending the springs (which are no longer replaceable) and axles (which is why I’ve stripped them down)

I’ve never understood why some road bikes are so expensive.

So much this. And not just that they are so expensive, that it’s so hard to tell the difference. I get noticeable benefits from more expensive components on a mountain bike – they’re not just a little bit lighter and better finished, they usually genuinely work better when it comes to forks, shocks, brakes (even if it’s the ability to get the lever and bite point where you want it), wheels, even grips. A relatively unskilled rider can have more fun and comfort on a better bike.

Road bikes not so much – I’ve ridden some expensive road bikes and really didn’t notice any significant difference for the sort of casual riding I do and I find it hard to believe that even racing at an amateur level theres a lot of benefit.

are pretty shit for any tight circlips but will do the job on the pedals.

I think my “better” ones are pound shop jobs https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/1759424237?var=512735696802&iid=323745470595

But you really could bodge something to safely remove and tighten the clip on MX pedals with a bit of coat hanger.

Pretty much any circlip pliers will do the job but you could bodge it with all sorts of things as it’s only plastic so doesn’t need much force to undo/or tighten.

When you put it back together don’t get freaked out by the movement – the plastic cap loads the bearings. Before you put that back there will be a few mm of sideways movement on the axle. I took a pedal apart about 3 times and spent ages searching for a part I was sure I’d dropped before I put the plastic cap back and realised it was all fine….

Buy off the shelf – for anything but high end gaming use you’re not going to need anything fancy and basic computers are cheap as chips these days. *Maybe* things have changed but I built a few mini PC’s years ago and there were various undocumented compatibility issues between motherboards and memory etc that a system builder would have sorted out for you.

Have you got a model you’re thinking of? A quick look at John Lewis and the only 24″ sets aren’t even full HD (they’re HD ready 720p). Sony and Samsung sites don’t seem to have anything below 30″

I’d be looking at a computer monitor, set top box and linking it to your hifi.

The UK government has in effect suspended the country’s property market, stopping estate agents from marketing new homes and banning visits to those already for sale, as it seeks to contain the coronavirus outbreak.

The government’s move on Thursday evening followed calls from banks to freeze the market. In talks between lenders and ministers, banks have expressed concern about the impact of the pandemic on valuations. They are also concerned about granting credit when the economy is in freefall, according to senior bankers.

They have told ministers it has become impossible to survey properties, according to people briefed on the discussion. Bank call centres have also been inundated with anxious homeowners requesting mortgage holidays.

The government had already urged buyers and sellers to delay moving unless it was unavoidable for “contractual reasons”.

But on Thursday, it went further, saying no visitors were allowed into properties while the ‘stay-at-home’ measures were in force, including estate agents, surveyors or potential buyers. The edict in effect blocks any new transactions taking place after the current round of pending completions.

Vast numbers of AirBnB’d property appearing on rental market apparently. No-one is going to be moving or even viewing for some months and could be even longer until overseas travel starts ramping up again.

Will be interesting to see how many of those are highly leveraged and whether there will be a slew of repossessions or disposals of second homes.

Thanks. I think one of those through the wall things is the answer. will mount it to a bit of 75×45 stud and should be able to reach behind and then either bracket it onto the studs to either side (and/or sikafix or grip fill it to the back side of the tiled wall).

Now just need to see if I’ve still get a 30mm diamond hole saw to get through the porcelain tiles. going to be a bit nerve wracking drilling it in place (they’re 1200×600 so no chance of replacing one if I manage to screw it up and we cut them all on the flat when installing. I can’t remember whether I settled on using the Makita cordless or the high speed drill in the end either)

Usually one of the problems is all the excessively long cables – standard 1m power leads, HDMI cables, network cables etc.

All looks a lot tidier if the cables are only as long as they need to be – look on eBay and you can buy network and HDMI cables as long or short as you need for a few quid. Hack the plugs off the power cables and shorten them to the lengths they need to be, fitting new plugs if the old ones are moulded on.

You used to be able to buy extnesion leads with custom plugs that keep it all a lot smaller as well

I don’t think you need anything super bright on the back – even cheap rear lights have been visible for huge distances for many years. The super bright stuff is horrible if you’re riding anywhere near other cyclists – completely destroys their night vision. Also pay attention to the angle of the light and don’t mount it on your helmet (which is eye level for following riders).

I think the Tracer is one of the worst for this. Far too bright and the bracket doesn’t have an adjustable angle so often mounted really badly (angle depends on seat tube angle).

For exercise I don’t think you can beat AfterShockx bone conduction. IME, less wind noise, no issues with them falling out/loosening and losing bass response (which I’ve had with all in ears) and you retain more awareness of what’s going on around you.

I’ve had some cheap Chinese in ears and the sound quality was good – loads to choose from

Just had a mail from Fidelity. I’m sure it’s all going to be fine.

We’re writing to let you know that a number of UK property fund providers have temporarily suspended dealing of shares in their funds. You can find a list of the suspended funds below.
It is no longer possible to buy or sell shares in these funds. It is not yet clear if – or when – dealing in these funds will resume.
These decisions have been taken due to the current turbulent market conditions, which has meant the fund’s independent valuers have advised that they’re unable to accurately value the properties within the funds. Under these circumstances, the funds’ authorised corporate director or depositary believe it’s in the best interests of investors to suspend dealing within the funds.

(slightly contentious maybe) it’s not overly clear how many extra deaths will be caused by coronavirus as proposed to std flu.

A lot. Have you been living in a dark room? In a best case scenario maybe 250k, worst case 500k or more. Although evidence seems to be coming through that the fatality rate may be higher than early evidence suggested as it wasn’t that young people had a better survival rate, just that they take longer to die so hand’t hit the stats
    https://www.imperial.ac.uk/media/imperial-college/medicine/sph/ide/gida-fellowships/Imperial-College-COVID19-NPI-modelling-16-03-2020.pdf

All the measures to contain COVID-19 will reduce transmission of normal seasonal flu but more people who get it will die because there won’t be any emergency beds.

But the death rate isn’t what’s going to hit house prices, more that the economy has just basically shut down (or been entirely nationalised depending on your outlook). But either way productivity just went through the floor. There is going to be a massive financial hit one way or another, a lot of job losses, a lot of repossessions.

However, if you’re not a first time buyer and have a decent amount of equity you’re not actually increasing your personal risk that much and, yes, you could be stuck in the new house. Against that I can’t see that you’ll manage to move any time soon.

    5. Home working/Skype to replace 75% of a)business office space and b) business travel.

Agree – a massive amount of business travel has always seemed un-necessary to me (a lot of the business travel I’ve done was). Home working, maybe so but I think people are really going to crave the interaction of an group environment so maybe not so much

I think it will be the final nail in the coffin for high street shops and a shift over to online for the people who’ve still shopped physically up to now. I reckon a lot of shops just won’t reopen.

However, just because someone makes them for Hope, that doesn’t mean you can actually buy the same pads from that manufacturer.

That is true but I think it’s much less likely with brake pads than with speakers.

Hope pads are rebranded Galfer pads apparently.

Second hand corporate HP Laserjet FTW. I’ve got a ancient Laserjet 4000 – service duty in the specs was 65k pages a month(!). I think it had done 16k pages when I got it about 15 years ago for about £100. When the cartridge it came with ran out I picked up an original high capacity cartridge for about £50 on Ebay that’s meant to do 10k pages. I just checked today and I’ve actually printed about 10k pages since I had it and it’s still going. If you use remanufactured toners it’s even cheaper.

I’ve just picked up a newish colour Laserjet M451dw. Semi corporate/small office. Build quality is nothing like as good but still rated for 40k pages a month. Again it’s only done about 16k pages so will likely last forever. Full RRP cartridges are £300+ a set rrp(!) but you can pick up remanufactured from about £30 and even originals at a fraction of rrp.

I’ve had a few colour injets over the years and they’re stupidly expensive and last about a year. The same for consumer lasers (toner is far far cheaper for corporate)

I looked into this a while ago – Pressure gauges are accurate around the middle of their range so that Park is probably pretty good around 80-100psi. Most track pumps are intended for road tyres so they’re good for about 80-120

Even a good gauge at those pressures would be pretty hopeless in the 15-30 range you’re using for mtb tyres (and there’s little scale to make small adjustments).

I stuck a £6 60psi Wrekin gauge from eBay on the RennKompressor that does my mtb tyres. More accurate, cheaper, and less faff than a separate gauge BUT of course now no use for road bikes or seating tubeless so I’ve got other track pumps.

The Spanish approach seems overkill to me. Staying fit, healthy, sane and reducing stress seems all the more important at the moment. Obviously this isn’t going to be the summer to learn to jump but ride sensibly and it’s got to be a positive. If I”m working from home I’m going to be doing my ‘fake commute’ most days.

If we are really worried about load on the health service we would be lowering all speed limits and increasing penalties for breaking them.

    Anyway –

    DONT!

It’s always interesting reading these threads and being reminded there are people who deeply dislike the stuff I rate most.

There’s still a hostility from BBC musics bods towards metal.

I’ve got what I consider a pretty wide taste from soul and Jazz to techno and house to rock but metal leaves me not just cold but reaching immediately for the off button. Mary Anne Hobbs drops some in every so often and it’s an instant mute.

Really not an issue for ‘self-employed’ type businesses. Insurance company should be told but it makes no difference to the premium (Katie has separate business insurance for her furniture restoration business and the two seem to happily co-exist).

Insurers concern is about the number of visitors (they don’t want you running a shop) and the normal caveat is that you’re not covered for theft while visitors are on the premises (unless there is evidence of a break in).

As long as you make some personal use of the business spaces as well no issue for Business rates. I’m guessing things would get more complex at the point the business had a completely separate, lockable, part of the property and you had employees on site.

Working from home is so normal I’m pretty sure it’s in the standard T&Cs of household policies.
