I am after something similar…I have about £1000.

I have always favoured steel frames befoe like the cindercone but i wondered of alu frames are just as good?

    Is Ti worth the extra?

Thanks Scott- I did realise about the cycle to work but I may buy a new road bike as well 🙂

For off road then SS is fine I think but on road my 16:32 ratio is so low! The road bike is fine but as soon as I point it downhill or more than a short steep hill then the 48:16 is inadequate.

well I am stronger climbing out the saddle but if the hill is too long or too steep then I have to get off and walk!

My mates are amazed at my climbing strength although they think I am weird for using SS! Sort of making life hard for myself.

I think I want one geared MTB with front suspension (something good like a cotic soul, rocky mountain blizzard or a Klein altitude). Then one awesome road bike around £1000 (carbon or alu and carbon fork) and I will keep my shonky alu cyclo cross SS.

He is open to offers so may be I could do a deal 🙂

Are they really a £1000+ standard bike?

    aw
    Free Member

no I really do need to get rid of at least one!

I think maybe 1 mtb, 1 cyclocross and 1 road bike would be about right?

I think maybe water only for the bladder in future as I have never had any problems even leaving the water in after each ride. I could then use the carb drinks in bottles?

thanks chunky…do you use carb drinks and do you rinse them out after every ride or is putting it in the fridge sufficient to keep it mold free?

well I do enjoy SS riding but I suppose that I am not a fitness god. Sometimes it is difficult aligning my riding with others on geared bikes.

Just got a joystick with helmet mount on fleabay for £100 and could not be more pleased with it. Although I suppose if you can get the same for £40 or less why pay more?

I am interested in this as I have decided to go for gears again after being only SS. I also want FS after being fully rigid.

My shortlist maybe something like this…

    Scandal
    Handjob
    Hummer
    Cotic Soul
    Singular Hummingbird or Swift
    Kona Explosif

I am a MTBer and I wear Lycra – there it is out now (in more ways than one).

I find Lycra far more practical and comfortable TBH

The fashion thing is a pain with MTB and the gear costs more. The Road stuff is so functional with more pockets. It is warmer too if you buy the right gear.

same here…I fancied cyclo cross but is the season over?

I have a SS c/cross and I think I can make a go of it in a fun cat or even veteran cat 🙂

Other than that maybe a mtb race…I am in the south east (north kent)

    I have a 97 cindercone 🙂

Yes I tried a good chain I thought but it still stretched…then I was trying to mix and match old and new chain or stretched and unstretched…

Perfectly possible to live without TV but you do miss out on conversation sometimes. Also watch a so called general knowledge quiz (again on TV) and see how many question are about TV programmes like Eastenders!

I love radio so missing TV would not be a problem for me. As the years have gone by I watch less and less TV. i would miss maybe rugby (six nations), cricket highlights and a few comedy shows like family guy and mock the week. Saying that England are crap this year as regards rugby, you could listen to test match special on radio 4 for the cricket and there are several good comedy progammes on radio 4.

I wondered how you can play DVD films but not have a TV licence as the guys who police the licences are very persistent! Both my mum and Dad passed away but they would not believe that their empty house did not require a TV licence until I eventually sold the house.

I am on the same track as the original OP but I have an old kona cindercone pictured below that I am looking to improve on or upgrade with a modern equivalent. What bike could replace and improve upon (if any) on the cone?

i am still torn between SS and gears and fully rigid and front sus but that is a whole new thread subject I guess!

    go for 6′ x 8′ for a reasonable size.

look on eBay there maybe a cheap second hand one in your area you can pick for next to nothing.

new ones are expensive so also try the freeads etc…

I would go for a gravel base so you can re-site easily if necessary.

Place in full sun (obvious) and try to align the g/house (damm I have forgotten) I think north-south but in reality you may not have a chice of facing in any case.

go for as many vents and opening windows as possible.

You will need bubble wrap insulation for the winter (if you are growing in winter) and shading using green netting or shading wash (applied to glass) in the summer

I had the same on my car…the cable got loose or slack but fortunately for me I could grab the cable and pull manually as it were to get it open. I think garages are quite used to this problem and should not charge you too much to sort.

I still ride this with a big smile on my face 🙂

I find the Vs fine as I do the rigid fork and the flat bars!

gears are too easy….easy to cop out on hills and select a lower gear 🙂

SS liberates the mind – no more woorying if you are in the right gear!

    plus less maintenance…

    plus less weight…

    plus they look better/cleaner!

I have had one since 1989…the same one in fact!

I have a busy job, other hobbies (cycling ,etc) and three children and still find time.

winter you need 2 hours a week but in the summer you need a min of 4 hours a week I would say!

Excellent and rewarding pastime – do it!
