Used GP4000s before and they are fast but not much puncture resistance

    Thanks for all the advice…

i went for a wahoo element bolt in the end. I am very pleased with it. The buttons are much better than the touch screen IMO. I don’t really miss the colour screen either. It was £259 with sensor pack such as cadence, speed, HR strap. This is FRP so you could probably get it cheaper but I was in London so just bought it from a bike shop on the spur of the moment.

love the phone interface, the simplicity, works without bugs, so reliable, excellent battery life, etc.

    highly recommended.

I wonder if a wahoo is a better option.

I decided to buy new, the thing is pretty damaged so convinced the repair cycle of sending it back to be told that will just waste time. I have Europe’s Road maps and os oradance survey uk on the little cards that plug in so ideally want a garmin (or other make) that take those.

i loved my 800 and listened to friends struggling with 810s and 820s. Not sure if the other models like the explore do HR and cadence?

not so bothered about live segments etc.

ordered a dogears unit from the USA…around 20 dollars I think.

Alternatively there is a DIY option here: https://www.dogearsgps.com/ as long as you are handy (and careful) with the superglue.

I did it on a previous unit and it worked great, and pretty sure I got the recommendation off here so I’m not the only one.

But you may prefer a refurb.

not sure on dleivery but hopefully will do the job…like the look of the raceware glue on unit too so if the dogears does not fit/work will try that.

    Contact Garmin linky
IME they didn’t do specific repairs and supplied me with a refurb unit, which was as new. Download your data before sending the 800 in

    i sent them a mail

Use pro 4s currently but last pair were £40 and was offered the Laguna at £15! Plus they. Have a blue stripe that matches the bike!

I am going with the new ones. I fitted the planes shimano pedals and tried them on a short ride. Easy enough clipping in and out and the new shoes are so comfortable. The only issue i got was when setting off with one clipped in you pretty much have to get the other clipped in immediately otherwise you slip off the pedal!

Plus I have a contingency as meeting the wife at Shrewsbury 5 days in so if required could swap back then

I agree it’s a great bike. I came off recently and chewed up the orange bar tape plus buckled the front wheel but everything else was fine.

New macs do not have disc drives.

I loaded Tom Tom on my iPhone and got cheapest iPhone with least memory. I pay 79p a month for extra storage.

Thx guys…I tend to get six months out of my Michelin pro 4s or about 2,000 miles and I do get more punctures near the end of their life!

Good call on the scwailbes and continental 4 seasons.

I did have the back light cranked up…my bad!

I also left it on over the lunch stop which would not have helped either.

Thanks for the tips guys i will try them out

Not really looking for a bulletproof heavy tyre but something with puncture resistance but still rolls well and not too weighty.

I saw on planet X the Vittoria range and the Corsa CX III look good

    Excellent options

It is interesting to see different frame materials. They all seem valid at this price point. Even Ti sneaks in with the kaffenback

I am torn I must admit

Road rat seems more emotionally pulling me but I do get on with drops as I have a road bike.

Both I guess can fit fatter tyres

For mud guards then escapade might be better

Thanks guys…I concur on the pro 4s vs GPS4000s. I have used both a very pleased with both. yet to try 4 seasons or schwalbe ones. The gators were excellent puncture resistance but seemed twitchy in the wet and during winter, this maybe psychological?

    nice pics

I used to ride a 97 cindercone with P2 forks but ultimately the frame was a little too small for me. It loved singletrack and I never really missed FS at all 🙂

CX bike with knobbly tyres might be the answer. The flyer is not really a CX or hybrid it a road bike!

Thanks guys…thinking about options with the Genesis flyer singlespeed.

So easy to fall into new bike mode…

Could change the gearing for a more easy gear or I could get fitter!

    Thanks guys…some good suggestions.

I have the ‘Britain in a box’ set and have tried a few of them. They have been pretty sweet up to now. there is a couple in Norfolk but not particularly near where i am staying.

I am taking the MTB 🙂

    some answers to questions…

i dont like the ‘life’ tag but it does sort of sum up what I want. I do not commute at the moment but work from home as a consultant but was commuting up to very recently and may do in the future.

Thanks for the suggestions. I like Surly and singular and was looking at their bikes at the bike show 2 years ago.

I could modify the flyer but I think maybe sell it on ebay for around £200 and use that for my new one. My budget is around £1000 I guess but could stretch for a very special bike.

    I love steel…

I have a MTB so maybe more a road bike that can do rough trails than the other way around.

Thanks g5604 for the direct comparison with Knog binders and joystick. I love my existign joystick and only have to change due to failing battery life, which to be fair is after over six years near constant use and re-charge (commute on average 4 times a week 15 miles each way).

I agree iwth comments regarding functionality and able to swap mounts etc. for the joystick.

I think I will expoler the repalcment battery option but also probably buy a new joystick. i might go for an earlier model ether mk7 or mk8 to save a few pounds.

not sure why you need to know cyinical… i gave up with FT a while back. I still sue HR but have never used or owned a power meter. Then again I do not race.

I use the HR zones on Strava using my max HR rate of 188 and try to train within ‘Tempo’ or ‘moderate’ zones depending what I am aiming to achieve, either miles, distance, time or effort.

I also find the ‘suffer’ score on strava useful for measuring overall effort.

I even took off al my cadence sensors after being pissed off when thet intermittently worked! dont measure cadnence any more 🙂
