You don’t want to grind the anodising, you will wreck it. A hard anodise with a ptfe seal for lubricity would be what your after but there are several things to take into account. Anodising is not just a surface growth, you eat away your substrate as well. So once stripped, clean, de-ox and etched you can lose a bit on the size, especially on a diameter. I wouldn’t expect it to make much difference on fork stanchions to be honest but you never know!. For a 25um hard anodise film we would use the rule of thumb of 50/50 growth. So 12.5um into the substrate and 12.5um growth on the anodic film. You can’t just keep adding to the film either as the acid used in the process actually breaks it down as your forming it.
Working with virgin Alu is a shed load easier than trying to sort stuff thats been anodised before. We find most of the time that you would need to repolish stripped parts to get a decent finish.

Just buying a frame and moving all the parts across from my Swift to it. Unfortunately there’s been a bit of a wait for it, was supposed to be here last month but is now due on the 16th June.

I had to return a Fisher a couple of years back when it cracked. They stripped a bike there and then as the manufacturer had no more woman’s ones left (it was the wife’s). They where quick and helpful.

Sorry, are we talking about the pit at the end of the Red? and when was the accident with the rider?. I only ask because in the middle of Summer myself and a mate where coming to the end of the red when we heard someone calling for help, was a chap and his mate. I went off to guide the Ambulance in and we checked back a little later. Never did hear the outcome but it didn’t look clever at the time. I was on a Swift.

Sidewalls on mine have been fine so far, they did take a hell of a lot to seal though. I’ve managed to cut the actual tread on mine so it wouldn’t seal. Repaired it in the end with a patch but it was a faff.

Sorry to hear about the off Gee, easily done. I managed to collect a stump at the bottom of the shocker on my last lap without the aid of trying to pass anyone. If anyone here is the lovely chap or lady that stopped to lend me a multi tool to fix my rear brake at the end of the shocker then thank you! I owe you one!.

I have a set of M960s the i polished up. Tried lacquer when i first polished them but it didn’t last long. They do scuff up and oxidize quickly, i just repolish them. Soon going to try an experiment. After lookng into it at work best option seems to be – polish – alochrome then get a few layers of lacquer on there within 12 hours. The alochromeing is a conversion coating that will allow the lacquer to bond properly to the surface.

As above really mate, just hover over the saddle and use your legs and weight to pump the undulations. If you like we will have a practice session next time we are over and see what we can do.

O, and buy a Swift!

just as a slight hi-jack, i run a steel freehub body on mine but i’ve found that i seem to go through the bearings on the inside of the cassette like crazy. They seem to eat themselves no matter what make i use. Anyone else had this? the hub was fine when it ran geared.

Right then, quick disclaimer! The route above is slightly wrong for the morning’s ride. It’s one of our lads GPS tracks and the cheeky fella has included some out of bounds sections. Just for reference we will be sticking to the legal tracks only. Also he shall be prodded with a large stick and forced to ride a Raleigh Activator for the mornings ride as penance.

Last year over 20 people turned out for some great riding around the trails of Thetford. MBR magazine also turned out on their old school machinery and covered the ride in their magazine. There will be a ride in the morning followed by another after lunch, as per the maps above. Lou74 will be our guide for the day.

there’s a fair few of us on Retrobike if you pop in and take a look, i’m sure several people on here have met us before (Luke for example). We often have rides at Thetford and a few of the lads are from your neck of the woods. Just so happeds that we have a big ride planned for this Sunday at 10 in the morning. I think last year we had about 30 riders, but we put that down to everyone wanting to get their faces in a magazine!

that crome finish is a paint on effect, won’t last to long. I have a set of 960’s polished and to be honest the only thing you really can do is just re-polish when they get tatty. Looked at other options (work at a plating and anodising place) and they just are not feasable.
