Well I’ve got the hub, I think I’d better start saving up.

Thurman Merman I added a spare in case that was a problem but it’s all working without it.

I have now identified the problem and can report that it was caused by a misaligned headset logo – schoolboy error I know.

Seatown camp-site just outside Charmouth in Devon. Very nice and as close as I’d take a tent to Blackpool.

    Update

Took it all apart and cleaned everything. Reassembled and tightened and everything ok until I tightened the stem when again it became loose.
So start again, set headset, tighten stem until play occurs, tighten headset again with stem still lightly tightened, tighten stem fully = no more problem, no knocking, no binding.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Built one at my old house. I put down a concrete base and then built a dwarf wall one concrete block high around the edge. I also put a damp proof membrane below the concrete and along the top of the dwarf wall. I then built a framework from 3×2 and faced it in 15mm shiplap to 2 sides. It was built into a corner against existing walls so the back and one side I prefabricated using 3×2 and exterior ply. For security I didn’t put in windows but used clear roofing sheets for a two foot strip along the front of the roof which gave a really good light for working without turning it into a greenhouse.

Bearings are in correctly, tried putting them the other way to be sure I was right. I will try another stem at the weekend as I can rob one of the old Marin. My thinking is that the bearings have been on the way out and that the extra stress from having a working front brake has taken them over the edge. The thing that puts a doubt in my mind is that they still feel smooth and that makes me think they are ok. However I’ve never worn a headset out before so I have nothing to go on. The bike is 3 years old and is my all year round commuter and has been commuting off road for the last year so it gets plenty of use in all weathers.

When I bought my Marin East Peak 11 years ago I went for the 17.5″ despite only being 5’5″. I just found the 15.5″ too short. The frame design of that bike also meant I could go up a size without standover being an issue. My current hardtail is only a 15″ but the virtual top tube is very similar to the Marin. So I would go for the size that was closest to giving me the virtual top tube I wanted provided that it also gave adequate standover.

I can over tighten the headset and cure the knocking but then the steering starts to bind. There is no sign of a problem with the star nuts and I have tried 2 pairs of forks. I will try stripping it down again and cleaning everything. The thing I find puzzling is that I can set it up ok and then tightening the stem causes the headset to become loose. It’s nearly as frustrating as the old threaded headsets where the lock nut always seemed to move the top race just enough to cause binding.

    Livinstones Restaurant.
I don’t have the address to hand but it’s one of my favourite anywhere. Good bar attached to it called Planters, very colonial with zebra skin sofas and suchlike.
And go on the wheel and pretend your Harry Lime, fantastic, like the London Eye but with the imminent threat of its collapse in a heap of twisted iron and splintered wood. The carriages are little more than garden sheds and if you start moving about you can get them to start swinging.
    One of my favourite cities.

Off Road commuting which can easily be extended on a nice morning or evening. I usually try to get a longer ride in on a Friday after work as the kids are out swimming anyway. I’m lucky to be able to choose quite a few routes to and from work and I often extend the ride by 15 minutes to half an hour. Not much but I enjoy every minute of it. The best thing about having to ride every day is that I find I’m much more likely to grab any opportunity for a ride, all my stuff is always by the back door and your just mentally ready to ride all the time. I found it much harder to get out and motivate myself before I was commuting.

6 miles total 5 miles off road. Although if I cut through the cemetery I can increase the off road bit. As a matter of respect I don’t ride over the recently departed.

I used to like the Hasselblad adverts from the 70’s. Always seemed to be in yachting magazines. I wonder why…

1998 Marin East Peak. I went straight from 12 years of rigid to full suspension and found I could go out all day without feeling wrecked at the end of it. Most of the time I wasn’t really aware of the suspension just aware that it wasn’t hurting as much any more. Having a hardtail now I realise that 80% of the benefit was coming from the front end and that’s all I need for the riding I do.

My wife was all for going out and buying a new fridge freezer a few years ago because we had a similar problem and the fridge was getting warm inside. I was away at the time and managed to persuade her to at least wait a couple of days until I could have a look at it. When I did look closely it was apparent that over the years we’d had it the door had dropped slightly. The door still sealed properly but the movement was enough to stop the door from switching the light off when it was closed, it pressed the switch in, which was above the door, but not enough. I fixed a small strip of plastic to the top of the door and we got another 4 or 5 years out of it. It’s surprising how much heat a little pygmy bulb can produce in a sealed box.
I’ve often wondered how many perfectly good fridges have been thrown away because someone didn’t notice what was happening.

Always phone Dell once you have configured what you want on the web. We’ve bought quite a few in the past and they have always been willing to reduce the stupid delivery charges when we call. We don’t have an account with them and have often just bought single machines. We also transport them all over the world and they get handled by exhibition builders and loaders and I don’t think we have ever had one fail.

I think Whyte site has a weight of 24.8 lbs for both the Ti and the alloy 19 for a medium frame excluding pedals.

The Zion and the 19 both appeal to me as I could run the Rohloff on either if I went for right Zion frame.

brant I would hope you could tell the difference otherwise you’ve wasted an awful lot of R&D time and money. :-)

It would be interesting though to try riding the different models and experience that difference without knowing which was which in advance. Totally impractical I know as really you would have to believe that all the bikes were made from the same material for it to be a worthwhile test.

So Dibbs should I just set my sights on the alloy 19?

It would probably be much better to be able to test ride bikes without knowing what it was made of. Must be a massive placebo effect. I’d really like a Whyte 19 trail but for no good reason having never ridden either version really want the Ti version.

Raouligan just been out to check that and your spot on. Funny that the destructions or the SRAM video on youtube doesn’t mention that.

The brakes are new so there shouldn’t be any rubbish in there. May still be worth a try though. Anyway I’d better get back in the garage and try and stop them rubbing now!

Sorry it’s the pdf brochure which has the contradictory info. It has the Ti small standover as higher than the alloy one. it’s right everywhere else on the site. I’d be interested to here from anyone who’s ridden both the ti and the alloy and what the differences are.

Winstanleys have good deals on the Avid BB7’s at the moment if you don’t mind cables. You won’t have to buy new levers either. I’ve just bought a 160 for £48 from them.

Have a look on the downloads section on the Whyte web site. Most of the info is there including standover height. There is a contradiction though on the figures for the Ti standover heights which appear to be different from the alloy version. The geometry tab for each individual bike though shows them being the same. Interestingly enough both the Ti and alloy 19 are apparently the same weight.

You make an interesting point dashman. I’ve noticed a few links to old stories recently on that most popular bit.
Still lets not knock a second chance to enjoy that particular story.

We have non identical boy / girl twins. We left the task of naming them to their then nearly 3 year old big sister. Made her feel a lot more involved with her new brother and sister. As it happens I think twins is actually much less of a threat to the existing child as they don’t suddenly see one new person getting all the attention.
