but it solves a non-existant problem IMO.

    Tell that to Andy Schleck!

    Info from Canyon here

Looks promising whether combined with a dérailleur or a single sprocket for those who have the mind of a single speeder but not the legs. Bikes look much nicer with no front shifter and a single chainring as well.

I gave up on The Age Of Reason by Sartre on any number of occasions over a 20 year period. Then I picked it up again while running a particularly dull conference where I spent all my time just waiting around in case any one had any problems and I read it over 3 days and really enjoyed it.

I do short 7-8 miles runs 3 time a week and then get out for 10-16 mile run every other weekend, so I should be OK.

You should have no problems at all then. I do 6 miles each way off road to work and occasionally extend it further. I'm often working away so can go a week to 10 days without getting any riding at all and I managed a 35 mile ride at the weekend without too much trouble though the 3rd lap was definitely harder than the 1st. I'm trying to build up my stamina for trying the SDW in a day next year so I'm just gradually upping the times around a local loop.

And I wouldn't worry too much about the bike, I'm managing on a 30lb plus hardtail which is nearly a quarter of my weight!

I'll probably get round to it at some point but have had only one puncture in the last year and am light enough and cowardly enough to ride with sub 30 PSI without getting pinch flats.

I cut a pair down to shorts and didn't tape or stitch them and they have been fine.

It's brown! That's not much improvement on pink is it?

    Usually a little tighter.

I left one on the front through the summer. After 3.5 hours riding in the rain today I think it can't be long before I change the back.

It entirely depends on which way you hang your toilet roll.
If it hangs away from the wall then you have your laces straight across.
If it hangs against the wall then criss cross.

You see the problem about choosing a Ti hardtail is that you loose the most important differentiation between any group of bikes. The colour.

Now why on earth would a religious man need a handgun?

Well if Jesus had popped a cap in Judas's arse he could have saved himself a nasty end.

Screw some old spd pedals to a couple of boards and then clip in. No need then to secure a plank and could also be useful if we get a lot of snow again this winter.

a specialist who told her the insulin she was using was completely outdated

Methods of delivering insulin have changed but as I understand it from dozens of conferences there has not been a single improvement in the actual performance of drugs. What has changed is that new developments have made it easier to control insulin levels in the body but ultimately the person using the oldest methods and properly monitoring their levels will do far better than someone using the newest who is not monitoring properly. Patient input in treating diabetes is probably more important than any other disease excluding such things as alcoholism drug addiction and obesity. On one conference the guest speaker was young lad who was both diabetic and a junior triathlon champion who competed at world level. He constantly monitored his blood sugar and thus was able to control it very well. The majority of patients though don't seem to do a very good job of it.

But if at the end of the year I don't feel like I've progressed that makes me very downhearted.

I went out for a ride on Friday, the 24th anniversary of my first off road ride on my first mountain bike and I can assure you that despite not having progressed in anyway during that time I still enjoyed it as much as ever. I've found the best thing has been commuting as I don't find myself thinking about going for a ride now I just do it. I have to ride whatever the weather and if it's a nice day or I just feel like it then I'll just take a diversion and ride for longer.

On Friday at the top of a climb I was greeted with the sight of an older gentleman riding in just his pants, his shorts and t-shirt draped over the handlebars.

That was impressive, nice clear night in Brighton and just as it was disappearing from view a shooting star cut right across it's path.

I'll be out again tomorrow as we should be able to see it twice if it's clear.

    249fps super slow mo movies

I used to film stuff at between 500 and 20,000 frames a second using film, 249 doesn't sound all that impressive to me! Mind you a bit cheaper as 400ft of 16mm film Would be gone in a smidgen over 2 seconds.

and the bearing develop play in them quite quickly.

Must be something wrong with my 4 year old one which has covered 10'000 miles as their is no play at all.

Whether it's worth it or not really depends on the type of riding you do. Mine is on a bike used for off road commuting all year round. I get home or to work with it covered in mud and never do any more than wipe the chain down and spray some GT85 on it. The oil gets changed once a year which takes 20 minutes. The first chain lasted 3 years. I'm not sure if it's draggy or not but I find the ability to change gear even when stopped really useful and it's what I miss if riding with a conventional set up. The Alfine might be a more sensible purchase if your not sure if it will suit your type of riding, I bought my Rohloff as part of a Thorn Catalyst so I had a 100 day trial period. I might not have gone for it without
    that.

Bez I assume that if like me you have a ceramic rim then you are using V brakes. The V brake version is considerably cheaper than the disc version which may explain why you could build a wheel for £800.

I didn't actually reverse my sprocket on the Rohloff as it runs against an oil seal and I didn't want to risk running what after 3 years was a fairly worn and pitted outer surface against that seal. I thought after 3 years and around 7 -8 thousand K it didn't owe me anything. It can also make it difficult to remove if it wears down to far in both directions.

At £6 an hour working a typical 4 hour day and doing a 7 day week you could employ a lollipop person for over 21 years for that sort of money. Cheaper still a zebra crossing with very narrow stripes.

I concreted a metal spike in..

I,ve used the specific ones for concreting in for fence posts and a large raised deck. The reason fencing contractors just use concrete or postmix is that it's cheaper and they really don't give a damn if your posts have rotted out after 5 years.

A custom steel frame, made specifically for you. Worth every penny

I had a Roberts White Spider made in 1989. It was fantastic and I got exactly what I wanted at a time when there was very little choice of off the peg frames. However I no longer think that custom offers those advantages, just about every type of geometry is now avaliable. I also have a very nice 853 frame on the Thorn so for those reasons I've ruled that option out. I think if I hadn't done it before then I would have seriously considered it.

the mod plod used to make me chuckle on my old army camp they were 'barrier technicians

I think you'll find it was them laughing. Our lot were paid the same as civilian police and never did any more than check your pass and run a mirror on a stick under the odd car along with the odd check in the boot to check you weren't liberating Her Majesty's property.

Get the ferry over to Kerrera and enjoy an island with no roads. I haven't been in 15 years or so but it's a great place to spend the day either riding or walking around. More about the place rather than the quality of riding though.
