Those joints- I would screw a piece of timber alongside the joint AND put a post beneath the joint.

As well as the above I would alternate the joins so they are staggered it will look a lot better. In other words lay the first full length board from the right and then a cut board and your next full length from the left and so on. If your doing this in the middle of summer don’t be tempted to over-tighten your fixings as come the winter the wood will swell quite a lot.

I concreted in metal post holders for my deck as I wanted to avoid posts in the ground. It does add to the cost but it should last a very long time.

I reckon a this might be pretty good.

Light and a bit of flex at the back to improve traction

“do bikes get heavier once money’s changed hands!”

Don’t worry there is a simple method to reverse this, simply repeatedly post pictures and details of the bike on here in response to “show us your” threads and it will get lighter every time.

Isn’t the local honey thing to do with hay fever and local local pollen?

Have a look round the world and you’ll find people surviving and thriving on all sorts of stuff from people in the Arctic living on little more than seal blubber to grass eating bikers in the Midlands. What makes you feel more like getting up and going is getting up and going.

I am not running a chainguide with the mech-less setup

Are you running a bash with that.

I’m planning to go 1 x 9 but the manual granny bailout seems like a good idea, at least to start with. You see, your right it is catching on.

Its not a bad idea but a lighter weight solution that I use is to carry the granny ring and bolts in my camelback.

What about the extra weight of the tools you need to carry to swap over. I’m not entirely sure you’ve really thought this through!
I find a better solution is to take 2 or 3 bikes with different ratios and I ride the suitable one while the porters run alongside carrying the others.

PaulD I take it your not running a chain guide with that set up.

why did every mountain biker manufacturer flock to V’s when they came out?

We’ll be doing ours soon and it’ll be laminate. I don’t suppose it will do as well as the 40 year old Formica it’s replacing which still looks pretty much as good as new.

The one at southease is pretty steep.

It’s the grass that gets you on that one and of course the steepest part is at the top. I rode up it a couple of weeks ago and the last part was straight into the wind which didn’t help. As I got to the top I had to sprint for the gate as well as the last man in a team was holding it open for me and I didn’t want to look completely useless in front of them. I met them coming back 4 or 5 hours later, they were flying along but still didn’t look like one of them had broken into a sweat all day.

1 – Every day if I’m working in the office
2 – 12 miles by the shortest route but that’s only for winter.
    3 – Brighton
4 – Depends entirely on the weather, one way can take 30 mins in the summer or an hour in the winter when the mud gets really sticky and the chalk really slippery.

we’ve got advice that a rigid CX bike is perfect, and a short travel FS

Well both would be perfect it’s just a question of whether you prefer a lot of pain for a shorter duration or less pain for longer. And of course a lightweight hardtail would give you a nice balance of medium pain for medium time.

I don’t think you could sustain a population of 100 males per female for very long. That’s a lot of babies the female has to produce just to keep a constant population level.

In the end whatever it is Shakespeare did it first and Schindlers Ark is actually a novel rather than an historical account hence why it was able to win the Booker Prize. And hey what’s wrong with the Muppets I think there’s no finer version of a Christmas Carol.

Heart of Darkness is an extraordinary piece of work when you consider that Conrad was writing in effectively his third language.

It’s a European plot, and is all part of a conspiracy to get us eventually to drive on the right. However these dastardly foreigners are very clever and know that we’ll notice if they try to make us do it all on one day. So right now it’s just fifth columnist pedestrians but it won’t be long before the drivers and cyclists who have been recruited start as well and then one day you’ll wake up and find were all on the right.

    Don’t say you weren’t warned.

to practice low-level flying in. It’s quite interesting in a 60 ton transport plane, apparently.

Many years ago when I was in the Venture Scouts we had a trip to Link Miles and I got to fly the Hercules simulator. I got a bit overconfident though and crashed it while trying to fly under the Golden Gate Bridge. To show how long ago it was the control room to run it was packed with floor to ceiling computers all running massive reel to reel tapes.

I’ve just bought the Velo featherlite from Cyclestore for £40.
I’ve not had a chance to use it yet but one thing to note is that they do size up quite small.

Not too keen on the thought of second hand shoes..

I have to admit that if you buy one of my spincterometers you may have some trouble in selling it on in the classifieds. Choosing the right size will therefore be crucial, I’ll have to work on a non contact measuring tool, perhaps lasers might be the answer.

I want an electro magnetic pedal and cleat combo with variable current and a panic button on the bars. That would be a start and then it could be developed with a spincterometer which would automatically release the cleat when things get twitchy.

I’ve an Orbit XL II on one bike with a split crown race and another FSA headset on the Boardman that isn’t split. I swapped the forks of the older bike the other day with the split crown race and fitted that to the Boardman with it’s headset that had a pressed on crown race on it’s original forks. Everything works just fine.

Re reading that I’m not sure it makes sense but The simple answer is that in my experience it doesn’t matter.

I’m very impressed with my Wingnut 2.5. It keeps your back cooler and you barely notice it’s there in comparison to a standard pack. It’s designed for a 1.5 litre bladder but you can get a 2 litre one in. I tend to put 1.5 litres in it and carry a single bottle on the bike, which proved a wise move the other day when my 12 year old bladder split while on a long ride.

I think a few Rohloff owners have shifted their brake levers around looking on the Thorn forums. I did think about trying it but you’d need to do it on every bike you owned.

For what it’s worth I don’t think your mad to want to have your main brake controlled with a different hand to your shifter. Some of the replies have just been “well I’ve managed perfectly well so far so why change anything.” It doesn’t seem like anyone’s actually tried it and found they don’t like it.

    avdave2

Europeans of course have their bikes set up to allow you to do this as the brakes are reversed. You could do that if you wanted to.

The Evans one can be useful if you have a store near by and want to buy sized items. You can order more than one size price matched and shipped to store then try it on. They’ll refund the one you don’t need.
