Let me know when cows and sheep become persecuted to the point of near extinction, and I’ll think about it

So if any particular species of whale were not under threat of extinction you’d be happy for it to be hunted I take it. You have also stopped eating tuna and cod I hope.

So at least we now know where all your information and views come from. 🙂

I assume those supporting them here are vegans and take no part in the senseless slaughter of other intelligent beautiful creatures. Your belief that whales have a higher value than other animals is simply a cultural belief in the same way that the Japanese believe that eating whales is ok is a cultural belief. 😈

The Panaracer site doesn’t even seem to list them at all! It may only be a commute but it’s put me on the floor twice this winter when the front wheel has gone on the wet chalk.

So if I wanted one of those whippets and I wanted to use my Truvativ Stylo chainset how would I go about it. I’m only running a single ring so the angle grinder would take care of the fouling issues with the bottom bracket shell but how would I get it to work with the BB92.

I once spent a very long day in a darkened room with bright orange walls painstakingly editing a 16mm film I’d shot on a Steinbeck. By the end of the day I was mentally and physically exhausted but when I collapsed into bed the whole day repeated in my dream. I woke up feeling even worse than before I’d been to bed.

My wife once stopped talking to me for 3 weeks until I found out that it was all because of something I’d done in one of her dreams. She has never told me what it was.

I had to take my XC pro’s off in the winter as the wheels would stop turning 2 or 3 times on a 6 mile commute, they just picked up all the mud and held it. I’m using mud x now which seem like a good all round winter tyre.

The Grapes of Wrath – Steinbeck

One of if not the best book I’ve ever read.I’ve just finished East of Eden and can’t believe I waited 25 years after reading the Grapes of Wrath to read it.

chives – can’t you remove them by winding them all the way through the pedal – that would seem the obvious way to remove them to me.

I have rigid forks on my winter bike. As well as the comfort difference you may also notice a reduction in front wheel traction given the same tyre choice as you have been running with suspension.

I’m using flats on my rigid winter bike after 25 years of mountain biking either with clips and straps or spd and so far I’m happy with the change. I like the feeling I can get a foot out or down without thinking about it, something I’ve never quite achieved with spd’s.I’m only using some very basic flats that came with my boardman and an old pair of specialized shoes a friend gave me that don’t have that much grip. I’m going to persist with them though as if at the end of the winter I haven’t changed back I’ll know for sure that investing in something better will be worth it. I think I’ll stick with the spd’s on my hardtail which I use mainly for longer xc rides in the summer but I might consider swapping to more of a platform style pedal.

    12g for the pair!

Yes but they become a ridiculously heavy 18g when you add the end plugs.

does anyone else have 2nd bike specifically for riding when its really muddy which they rarely clean?

I’ve got a rigid Rohloff equipped bike which comes out for the winter. It gets plastered in mud twice a day on the commute and needs barely anything doing to it all winter – I just occasionally wipe the chain over and put on more oil. I’m currently using some gearbox oil I had lying around. Current chain is 2 years old and the last one was still fine at 3 years when I changed it as a precaution. I’ve a Son dynamo hub on it and have just bought a Supernova E3 triple so now I don’t even have to think about charging batteries either.

Bender fender does a similar job but helps to protect your seals. I use one on my hardtail and it works well. I use a home made Neoguard style one on the rigid bike as there are no seals to worry about.

I’d go for someone with belt drive building experience. titanium is flexible and belts don’t tend to like that

Van Nicholas have changed the Zion Belt Drive Rohloff drive side dropout so it now includes a gear hanger to mount a snubber so they obviously had issues with the original design.

I’m just going to spray myself and ride naked!

There was something on Grand Designs a few weeks ago where the outside of the house had been painted with a similar thing. Kevin put a sample bit of wall in some muddy water and it came out clean.

Is this from Van Nicholas? I know they do a 29 Zion now and have the Rohloff and belt drive options. If so do they still offer a lifetime Warranty

Its a very old-fashioned thing to suggest and it actually achieves nothing according to the research into it.

Quite possibly true and I might have taken no notice if the stitches had been anywhere else but given where they were I was willing to give anything a try to avoid any issues – I reckon I might have even gone for homoeopathy if anyone had suggested it!

MDF – I prefer to use water based gloss paint but I’ve yet to find a knotting fluid that doesn’t eventually come through the paint.

I was advised to take salt baths until the stitches were out by the surgeon who did mine. I did and had no problems but looking on here at other threads on this subject this doesn’t seem to be usual advice.

Still can’t get over the complete lack of front grip though.

That’s the thing I really notice on my commute now I’ve converted my winter bike to rigid. Even with my Rebas locked that little bit of movement left improved the grip considerably. I find it fine for all my riding the only limiting thing is how long I can ride for before things start to hurt. The wrists and hands are generally ok but it’s the pain in my ribs I get occasionally that can make riding unbearable.

I’ve just bought a Supernova E3 triple so my my lights get brighter as I get faster! 800 lumens isn’t that bright compared to what some people are using but the run time is pretty impressive.

the slight downside beign that accidents and injuries on 80% of your journey won’t be recorded

Yes your right – who do I write to to tell them about my sore thumb caused by hitting something I didn’t see in the dark. I think I may start a petition to get street lighting on the route.

As to building regs.. the regs are that you need a fan extractor

According to the Goverment’s planning portal website this is only required if there are no openable windows.

I serious injury and 2 minor injuries to cyclists on my commute. One of the benefits of having a route that’s more than 80% off road.

As for the speed limit with a small van your not going to get caught by a camera, your only real problem would be a copper who knew the law. 🙂

MTG – I’ve gone 1×9 on my derailleur bike because after 4 years of using the Rohloff exclusively the bit of my brain that could deal with making gear changes using both hands no longer works. I bet you also find it deeply frustrating when you realise you can’t change when stationary.

    avdave2

Well I use the Rohloff all through the winter on my off road commute and if I took account of cleaning and maintenance time when calculating average speed then the Rohloff is massively more efficient! 🙂

I don’t think it mentions in that comparison test whether the Rohloff was brand new or had been run in which might well have improved it’s results.

Lots of people mentioning those who were “virtually unbeatable” but for 9 years 9 months and 9 days Ed Moses was totally unbeatable. 122 consecutive wins, 107 in finals and even after finally being defeated he replied with a further 10 consecutive wins.

If you want to beat Ed in this thread you need to find someone who remained undefeated for at least 9 years 9 months and 10 days.
