They seem very popular on here and I don’t recall anyone having posted to say they have broken one.

I like them and the best bit for me is that it also helps protect the fork seals whereas the neoguard seems to just direct the crap towards them.

    I liked “It’s My Life”,

I love Spirit of Eden, fantastic album, one of the few bands who got less and less commercial as they went on.

Given that the police looked at this in some detail not all that many years ago,

I believe they also looked into phone hacking and also found nothing they needed to follow up on….

I’ve been commuting off road this winter with the E3 triple and really like it, a lot better for every day use than batteries. It’s been upgraded by a couple of hundred lumens recently so if anyone is looking for one make sure it’s not old stock. It’s plenty for the speeds I ride at off road, I use it in conjunction with helmet mounted light but that’s just nice to have not essential.
I reckon it would be even better with a small built in rechargeable and user changeable battery rather than a capacitor but it’s still very good. I already had the hub so the outlay was not too great in one go.

Early Reports are mentioning Trevor Brooking as Caretaker.

At least the changing rooms will be clean but what about a manager

    in the winter

and I’ve got one of these just outside the garage door, which I don’t use.

Well a new C456 can be had for £300 although it won’t work with all tapered forks. I don’t recall if that only applies to the 16″ though.

    Helmet mountable?

You’re going to need to integrate a welding mask as well.

I’m reading this while eating pasta and oat cakes, I reckon I could be pushing close to 61kg by the time I finish it.

Quite like the idea of the cauliflower rice though.

all very well until you find yourself ground to a halt from it clogging with mud/leaves/twigs and need to remove it

I always have an old toothbrush tucked in with my tools which is handy for unclogging things, and an old toothpaste tube to use as a tyre boot.
Wonder if I could make an emergency dustcap from the lids?

I earn a decent quarterly bonus, performance related which doubles my wage.

    bad money sense I know

If it wasn’t for the fact that your bonus is performance related I’d say you were a banker. Oh and you also claim to be honest so I suppose that rules it out as well.

I’ve never borrowed to buy a bike and never would.

Water’s got in & frozen, leading to a crack?

Possible but it’s a window I’ve resealed recently – may be that some water was sealed in and has frozen.

Its possible there is a screw head or a screw coming through

It’on the same wall a couple of meters from a window that’s had a new exterior lintel put in so it could be everything settling back down and as you say it’s easy to break if something is pressing on the edge.
The cracks however run from a large horizontal break out to the edges all around the frame rather than a single point. I’ve got to get the glazers in to change over some glass in a front door so I’ll see what they think when they come and measure up.

Have you been reading about the invisibility cloak research that keeps coming up on the BBC? That’s about a million times more impressive than going to the moon.

Your right there, a device that will allow us to kill our enemies more easily and take a look round the girl’s changing rooms all in one. Mankind has truly reached the ultimate goal.

Why not have both wheels the same size

I think the main reason is that this can be done on a frame you already have, you just need forks, a wheel and tyre. I’ve already got suitable rigid forks so I want to give it a go. The bike in question is my winter bike and is rigid anyway so I’m hoping for a bit more comfort. I just need to find a cheap wheel and tyre to try it with. I don’t want to spend much because even if it works out I’ll want a new wheel built on my dynamo hub.

Any recommendations for a cheap wheel?

Chain keep falling off, the gap on the inside and the outside is hugh.

I’d probably just superglue a bit of plastic on either side to narrow the gap.

I changed my HT pro into a 1 x9 and it works fine. I use a bashguard on the outside and part of an old light bracket on the inside to keep the chain in place. I might swap those for one of the superstar seat tube mounted guides at some point just to save a little more weight.

Tetsujin it looks like your not using any form of chain device, just a shortened chain. Have you fitted an unramped ring?

I guess I am the only one old enough to remember servicing cup and cone BBS with screw in cups and a lockring.

I had a similar bb on my first Rockhopper. I managed to strip the thread on my crank so I couldn’t get at it to service it and I kept in running for a very long time by pouring oil down the seat tube.

HS33’s used to be VERY big sellers, when I was in the bike shop world we’d sell more sets of HS33’s a week than any of the V’s.

I guess that was individuals replacing v brakes on their bikes as they wanted something with more stopping power. V brakes for all there faults do last well and don’t often need replacing due to wearing out so I wouldn’t expect that many people to be buying them. How many bike manufacturers though were buying the Magura’s, that’s the real measure of sales.

Rim brake? Why? Dont they already have problems with heat build up in the rim?

Would it actually make that much difference to heat build up? You’re still only slowing down from speed a to speed b you’d just be able to do it a little more quickly and I don’t think heat build up is an issue in a fast stop. If your dragging the brakes on a long downhill then your only going to build up the same heat as a conventional brake slowing you at the same rate. It does still seem a bit odd though as Magura have been making them for years and they have never been a big seller.

I really like the idea but on my hub geared bike I just cover the chain in some old gear box oil and wipe it occasionally. I reckon to spend no more than five minutes a week doing that on a bike used all winter for an off road commute. The current chain is 2 1/2 years old. So from a maintenance point of view the time savings are pretty small.

The lower weight is a good thing but the bike I have with a hub gear is heavy all round and therefore the weight saving to go to a belt drive would be insignificant and the cost very high to modify the frame and the hub.In the summer I ride a bike with a 1×9 setup which is light enough and as it’s only a nice weather bike again doesn’t need a lot of looking after.

So I think where it would really score is if you want a light as possible single speed or hub geared bike for all year round use.
Which is exactly what I would want if I could only have one bike.

A pair of Lusso thermal bib tights used for every winter since around 1990.
One of those Muddy Fox handlebar bags designed for the original twin stems which I’ve had since 1986 and now sits in my backpack to hold odds and ends.

Even if I don’t put their rent up I am still making money on it.

From a moral point of view you have already crossed the line where you make money because you have had the money in the past to invest and others don’t have that money. We all do it if we earn any interest on savings, have a pension or rent out a property.
So as you are already comfortable with making money because you have money rather than as a direct result of your labour this becomes a purely economic and practical decision and option 2 would seem sensible and you won’t loose sleep over an imaginary moral dilemma.
In fact the only real moral dilemma you might face is what to do with it if you decide to sell as it could be bought by a landlord who would charge the full market rate.

Usual rules apply – drive/ride only as fast/far as you can see.

I always stop on tight bends and get out of the car and walk forward until I can see it is safe. I then return to the car and either drive on or get out again and go and check if anything untoward has happened when I had my back turned while walking back to the car.

Holy crap, did he really use a lighter to look inside a petrol tanker?

I’ve a cousin who used a match to look inside a drum that had been used to store petrol. Luckily there was very little left in it and he only lost his hair and eyebrows.

Oh so its not as simple as just sticking a SCART thing on the end of those 3 leads then..

No, one option might be a cheap scan converter for the picture but you’re also going to need to get audio in to the telly I assume. That lead would only work if the netbook can put out component on it’s vga connector which is very unlikely. Vga out is RGBHV H & V being the sync signals, component video is RGB with sync carried alongside the G.

The expedition linked above often makes me wonder if their spirits had been crushed knowing they were 35 days late

Very likely I think. Another major factor was the decision to take Oates and Evans to the Pole. Oates was suffering with an old war wound and Evans had cut his hand badly but concealed from Scott just how badly as he didn’t want to let him down. In the intense cold it wouldn’t heal and eventually killed him. Had Scott sent Oates and Evans back and taken Cherry-Garrard instead they might have had a much better chance. Cherry-Garrard Wilson and Bowers had shown just how tough they were the previous year in their trip to Cape Crozier described in Cherry-Garrard’s book the Worst Journey in the World. Bowers himself was not meant to be in the final party to the pole but Scott realised he needed his navigational skills and so 5 rather than 4 made the final journey.
