Not sure what you mean by that. What is is that you want?

A camera that is entirely manual, focus, aperture, shutter speed, iso setting.

The cheaper ones were the same but just locked down to lower speeds.

A friend years ago took his dirt cheap matsui vhs player to get it repaired only for the technician to ask him if he’d like him to activate the nicam. Cheaper to make all models with the same parts buy disable features on cheaper models.

I’ve been using an ancient Karrimor 5L bag

I’ve got one of those that holds 2 bottles and it’s great for anything but longer rides. I use a wingnut then which again beats a normal pack for me.

thisisnotaspoon I largely agree with you, they are built to be used in auto modes and manual is secondary. I would love a digital OM1 or FM2 but no one is going to make one. And to be fair the focus and exposure on current cameras is so good the necessity of manual to overcome camera limitations is disappearing. However sometimes it,s nice to take your time and decide everything yourself.

Since when did having a lighter bike stop you having a dump? Surely you can do both?

Those who worry about the weight are all anally retentive and therefore can’t take a dump. 🙂

Nikon are currently offering an extra years guarantee on it if you register after buying and £30 cashback. I’ve just bought one for our daughter but not got near it myself yet. It does seem to be highly rated as a beginners camera but not the cheapest. However as a former professional I’d tell you it’s not about the camera. 🙂

30 years ago this August I got an OM1 and it changed my life, within 18 months I’d a place on a Photography BA course and it’s influenced both what I did after that and what I do now, best thing any has or ever will buy for me.

I bought my Supernova light through them – communication was a little poor and the website was still showing the item in stock while they were telling me they were waiting for it from their supplier. They were considerably cheaper though than the alternatives and in those circumstances I would use them again.

I want my next steel frame to have an EBB (I’ve been using one for 5 years with no issues and it looks so much better than the alternatives) and be belt drive compatible with Rohloff dropouts as an option. Definitely 2 sets of bottle cage mounts not worried about headtube size or seattube size. Fillet brazing would be nice too, I’ve an old Roberts frame hanging in the garage and despite having no paint and being a little rusty it still looks beautiful.

I think a custom colour option would be nice, if I’m going to pay a premium then I want something that looks different.

So from reading this thread I guess the only conclusion is that we all really want custom built steel. I think that’s what your competing against in terms of price, you have to be significantly cheaper than going custom

It could be that ancient people didn’t get fat because they didn’t eat lots and sit around on the sofa, not just because of what they eat.

Or because they were dead before the long term effects of their diet had an effect. It’s very difficult to look back and say the most ancient diets would suit us today when for a long period of human existence 40 was extreme old age*.

    * based on very scant evidence I know as very very few truly ancient human remains have ever been found to estimate average life expectancy. But that works both ways and there is just as little evidence to suggest such diets were the ideal for a long and healthy life.

I’ve one on the front of my off road commuter and that gets used a lot in all conditions and it has been great for the 3 years I’ve been using it. I’ve got hydros on another bike but if I were building from scratch I’d consider the BB7 for sure, plenty of stopping power for a lightweight xcer like me. Pad adjustment is simple enough and they are pretty easy to set up. I’m only running it with cheap cables and outers but others will tell that they are even better with good cables and especially good outers. I’ll upgrade when needed but after 3 winters the original cable still work fine.

I’m hoping it’ll be the C456 frame I got for £250. £250 I wouldn’t have spent if someone on here hadn’t started a thread on it and I hadn’t been killing a few minutes waiting for a cab to take me to the airport.

The Rohloff has a plenty wide enough range for me.

Shows the difference in the Russian mentality,

When the Russian T34’s rolled into Berlin they covered the tanks with machine gun equipped troops, even if they didn’t hit the Hitler Youth wielding a Panzerfaust they provided enough sacrificial soft flesh to save the tank.

I’m going to have to look around to see if I can insure for my own stupidity although I have a feeling I won’t be able to afford the premiums.

6 miles each way 5 miles of it off road. I often extend the off road bit and my longest route home is 26 miles. Time varies with the conditions as I do it all year round whatever the weather.

It’s a bit like buying a Ferrari, it doesn’t have to be red but it’s somehow not quite right in any other colour even if it looks good.

but black is less conspicuous eg to wife.

My wife asked recently “is that a different bike to the one you usually ride”, she wasn’t actually sure despite one being black and the other white.

A white saddle on a bike that looks set up for the worst of the winter filth. 😯

For longer rides I use a wingnut pack, feels like you’ve left everything behind until you need it, far better in my opinion than a conventional pack. On shorter rides bottles on the bike and tools in a seatpack. And you can get bottles with covers to save drinking sheep poo.

If money was not object is it worth having one on an XC bike

If money is not an issue and weight not an issue then why not. I only ride XC and never move my saddle but if I could do it on the go I would. I used to do it years ago and even had a Hite Rite but I wasn’t, and proud to say still aren’t, heavy enough to move the saddle down. It just worked like a bad suspension seatpost.

The mountain bike I ride now is hugely better than the one I rode 25 years ago and my ageing bones are grateful for that. I don’t however enjoy riding any more or less than when I began.

I don’t have a problem with the changes if previous parts are still available for a reasonable time so that I’m not forced to change and get rid of parts that still work. In the past I’ve always waited a long time to “upgrade” but I think in all cases I’ve found the improvements to be just that. As for the whole wheel size thing I’d quite like my next rigid bike to be a 29 as I can see that’s where bigger wheels would make the most difference.

Further to my rather flippant post I’d not worry about going on Holiday there. I’ve worked in Athens since the protests have been going on and it’s been fine. Not that I’d recommend Athens.

I think I’d wait till they are back on the drachma, I predict some much cheaper Greek holidays being available this time next year.

TJ will be along soon to tell you the Euro will be fine but I don’t think anyone really believes Greece can stay in it.

OK – it looks like if I buy one it’ll be the only red one in the country

I bought one last Saturday after a post on here about the price drop. I haven’t seen it yet as I’m working in Dublin but I’ll be back later today and it’s waiting in the office for me.

I’ve just bought the C456 over the whippet, the bits all to come off my Boardman hardtail, largely because I think it’s a much more versatile frame and I won’t need to buy a new chainset and BB.

I’ve a C456 frame waiting back at the office which I’ll be running with 100mm forks. I have bought a slackset for it though.

3g is useful if you travel a lot or alternatively if it’s for someone without a computer. If it’s for someone with a PC who doesn’t travel a lot I don’t think 3g is worthwhile. I bought the 3g because I’m away a lot and I thought a free access to email however clunky would be useful. I’ve enough books loaded to think it unlikely that I’ll ever download a book while away.

And I’d go with the kindle because it’s the market leader and it’s going to be easier to access content.

Another one here who thinks it would be a good idea if you got the electronic version when you buy paper. Even if there were a small charge for it, say an option to add it for 99p I think people would go for it and I think they would sell more kindles and paper books on the back of it.

I’m sure they must have looked at this and had a reason not to pursue it.

or you have a fork for sale?

    I think you’ll find it’s a spoon rather than a fork.

I can ride to work on road or off road. One of those options makes me feel great no matter what the weather or the conditions one of them is tedious.

Actually went the other way myself for really the same reasons as you, the best riding from my door is off road and I found myself taking my road bike off road more and more. I didn’t actually ditch the road bike I just bent it riding off road too much.

mods – how long a ban would one recieve for posting a pic of their er.. “proudest part” draped on a bike?

I’d of thought any part of GW and a bike in a photo would qualify as a cock on a bike. 🙂

Best would be The Icicle Works playing on The Royal Iris, a Mersey ferry moored next to HMS Belfast in 1984. All drinks at Liverpool prices and I was stood at the front with one foot on the foldback speakers being asked to make sure no one nicked Iain Mcnabs set list. I still have it somewhere.

The Smiths at The Dome in Brighton in 85 was a pretty close second.

I don’t think I can recall anything really disappointing.
