Not encouraging! Remember how long a UN52 bb used to last? 2years near daily use wasnt unheard of.

I think the current one on my all year round off road commuter is at least 3 years old.

My Thorn has the bayonet ones and they’ve behaved faultlessly for 7 years.

I’m 5’6″ and I’m riding my rigid bike in 69er mode at the moment. I’m pretty convinced that for me I’d have a 29 rigid bike out of preference. The bigger wheel makes a noticable difference to comfort when you have no squidgy fork.
However I don’t think I’m likely to ever buy a 29 suspension bike because it’s always going to be difficult to keep the front end low enough.

And all this from middle aged overweight IT workers who spend fortunes on big kids toys and “specialist” clothing to play in the woods. 🙂

Am I the only one who remembers when Jessops were a mail order specialist undercutting all the high street camera shops.

I used to have a neighbour who built an elevated extension and a loft conversion that makes that look good!

Get the Harvey Maps version and the whole route is on one piece of paper

And it’s waterproof which might be useful. 🙂

No, not at 5’6″ but having converted my 26 rigid bike to a 69er I’d like a rigid specific 29er, something designed to run a 440mm fork to keep the front low enough.

1st ride to work in BST and it was snowing on the South Downs this morning! I’m still wearing all my winter kit.Still the mud has either dried or frozen which is nice.

I very rarely get full travel on any of my bikes, apart from the rigid one

Isn’t that when your chin meets your handlebars? I try to avoid that on mine.

I had mine done yesterday, it was all ok but I can’t remember what it was. The nurse did say my BMI was a bit low so I might want to eat more pies. 🙂

    Update:
I’ve just been out and put the wheel back in a set of forks and there is zero play and it spins fine. So although it does feel notchier than before it looks like I might as well just keep running it.
So if anyone does have any concerns about reliability I’d suggest that it would be difficult to find a more reliable hub of any type. So the competition between small scale German manufacturers for reliability at either end of my bike goes into another year. Will the Schmidt beat the Rohloff?

I should point out that mine is seven years old and is used on a bike I commute off road on all year round and is still working and has never had anything done to it. It was only removing it from the bike today that led me to notice it was running roughly so I don’t think you can question their reliability.

The bearings on them do feel really notchy out of the box

Yes it’s always been notchy but this is a lot notchier than it used to be. I’ll check it for play tomorrow and see if there is any. What I don’t want to do is run it and cause damage further damage. I’ll contact SJS, its on a bike I bought from them.

I don’t think it’s about the insulation being breached it’s about current being induced. You can get Cat5 I believe with insulation with the same rating as mains cable which makes it ok to run in the same conduit. It might be worth a call to building regs to see if they can advise.

I assume that Cat5 cable is rated for running in the same conduit as the mains so you can get it signed off for building regs.

Just watched The Long Good Friday, brilliant film. Bit dated but still great….

I watched it a couple of days ago, brilliant, loved the bits where they are laughing at the idea of the Olympics being held in London.

Silent running is another good call, along with all those 1950’s and 60’s sci fi movies, The Day The Earth Stood Still, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Them and The Village of the Damned.

    Oh and Carry on Screaming

It’s short travel but the frames built to be ridden hard. Marin did the same thing with the new rift zone a couple of years ago but just like Orange discovered that most bikes are bought based on statistics rather than the experience of riding them.

I couldn’t buy one of those Shands bikes until I can afford 2, one to ride and one to hang on the wall.

Well rossp has a lever and I expect there are a lot of them lying unused in sheds so it shouldn’t be too difficult to get hold of one.

Thanks Leku, I’ve just measured my current distance as 170mm, I’m probably running my saddle a little lower though than I would if I had the ability to drop it, I’ll check it properly later.

richi reading the description on the Action Sorts website it doesn’t ship with the under saddle lever just the remote. I don’t know if you can buy that on it’s own. Wiggle are doing it with both for £140.

I’m pretty close to spending £100 from that psa about the HiLo seatposts and now you go and post that! Actually when you look at all that for £80 £100 for a dropper post looks ridiculous.

I know the post is 410mmm and the insertion depth is listed as 242mm. I assume this is the maximum insertion hence I reckon 168mm for the amount of seatpost to the rails. It should actually be slightly less than 168 if the 410 is to the top of the post.

    avdave2

Anyone know the minimum saddle rail to frame distance for these. From what I can glean it looks like it would be 168mm but confirmation would be nice.

    Thanks

Is the 2011 model any different to the current model? My mouse is hovering over the buy button.

Though tbh I find that a lot of completely unrelated searches still direct back here, such is the breadth of STW forum information/drivel.

IIRC I originally found this site while looking for a solution to mice in the loft!

Good call on running the ethernet cable with the electric cables…

I don’t know what current regs are but I believe you have to have a separation between the 2 so there is no chance of the ethernet cables becoming live. I’m thinking back to when I rewired our house and the in that case it was telephone cable. I may be talking rubbish but it might be worth checking.

Integral garage with roller shutter and a wall behind with a window in. Plenty of light when your in there but very secure with the shutter down. I’d also have a door in it for bike access. You could make the wall from stud work yourself and any future owner could remove it easily if the wanted to. Personally I’d like access from the house but I’d put a twin door in to properly isolate it but if its from a utility area then I wouldn’t worry about that. Save the garden to expand into later.

I think east to west is better if you can get a day when the prevailing winds are not prevailing. And just now they are not. Starting at Eastbourne means you haven’t got 3 nasty climbs in the last 15 miles. My impression of riding from around Southease to Winchester was that the climbs are longer heading east but not as steep which suited me just fine.

Brighton to Eastbourne shouldn’t be too bad, generally the eastern end is better in rubbish conditions. I ride on the downs every day to work around Brighton and in comparison to the rest of the winter it’s actually pretty good at the moment. I might even go a longer way home tonight and even get out for a bit over the weekend if it stays this dry.
