Aunt Beru was one of the charred corpses mentioned by P-Jay above.

Is dying in an earlier episode of Star Wars a hindrance to a later comeback these days?

Watched about ten minutes of the first episode. It’s mesmerically awful at just about every level you can think of.

I lasted 20 mins. Whenever I saw Henry Cavill pouting with long hair and a sword on his shoulder I thought I was watching Zaphod Beeblebrox from the TV series of HHGTTG, and that it was the sword doing all the acting.

If the turnout increases, but more people turn up to vote to keep you out of power, than to help you get in, you have still lost. The election was lost. Dramatically. Trying to paint it as some kind of success, because more people turned out to vote Labour than they did when Brown got kicked out, is desperate stuff.

^This. Corbyn had to beat Johnsons conservatives not Gordon Brown.

Also the UK’s population as of 2019 is 10 million more than when Blair won his landslide in 1997!

Seriously, do you think the people arguing for another referendum, will be as keen to have a referendum looking to rejoin rUK in 5 years time?

If Scotland leaves the UK, then rejoining it at a future date will not be Scotlands decision alone to make.

Me. If we all do our bit we can do a lot mor ethan our respective governements. If you start to do things it will influence people around you too. I’ve been inspired by others and hope to inspire. When people visit and see what you’ve done it gives them ideas. When they hear that you use BlaBlaCar or Flixbus, and avoid flying they start to consider the possibility too. When you’re happy with your electric car someone from a company makes enquiries about including electric vehicles in their fleet. It’s a cultural thing and that will reduce emissions as much as anything our goverments will do.

Shite from start to finish. As a species, humans in the west are keen to rape the planet. Other parts of the planet are doing it on our behalf. I include myself in this. I am just back from a meal out in Edinburgh. I see it more so at Xmas. Every little thing that we in the first world consider a necessity is something that people in some parts of the world can consider a pipe dream. Our consumerism blinds us to how much we require to keep it going. There are people on the planet that wake up with a belief that surviving the day is a success not far removed from finding food and water similar to animals. Our wish for more efficient loft insulation or a reduction of 20 to 5 flights a year ring hollow. I say this typing into a smart phone whilst watching a Hollywood film on a 40 inch TV with a spaghetti junction of power cables behind the TV for a printer, xmas tree lights, xbox 360, tv box, Wifi box, Nintendo wii and a stereo. Is anyone else’s tv area much different?

As a teacher I often come here to take my mind off having dealt with kids and their lack of social awareness all day, but in all seriousness I’ve had many more thoughtful political discussions with 14 year olds today than I’m seeing here from some posters.

I too am a teacher, and the election was discussed by the 14 year olds I teach. I too was taken by their level headedness, knowledge and political engagement.

Stewart Lee summed it up well when he said people preferred labour under Blair when they looked like a bunch of coke dealers from an advertising agency, rather than now when they are led by Catweazle and his army of furious tramps.

As I left the house tonight to head to the polling station, my 5 year old daughter looked at me and pleaded for me to vote for a new Prime Minister. I asked her why, she sorrowfully said she didn’t like Boris. Sadly looks like she will need cheering up in the morning.

During the Black Friday Aliexpress sale I ordered the San Martin homage to the Seiko 62mas diver. The 62mas is a stunning watch, shame Seiko priced their own remake out of the reaches of most people.

The barbershop scene in Coming to America is great.

“Everybody know Cassius Clay is the greatest fighter!”

    “What about Rocky Marciano?”

“Rocky Marciano, Rocky Marciano… Every time we talk about boxing, white boy got a pull Rocky Marciano out of his ass!”

This wont be the exact dialogue but it is something like this.

bruneep. I have followed what has being going on and thinking exactly the same.

A residential building can be allowed to be designed and constructed with horrendous fire risk flaws, and now the focus of all problems is at the feet of those dealing with a situation in the moment.

I cant help but think that there are executives in the cladding manufacturing firm saying, ‘see the death toll would have been lower if the fire brigade procedures were better’. The whole thing is arse about tit.

Fire rescue systems are like PPE. They should be an absolute last resort. Potential dangers should be design out first.

Of course if that isn’t what she meant, then she is a **** of the highest order. And really any prospective MP should be able to adequately explain their position given a couple of goes if at first they are misunderstood, she appears at least to have failed that test.

    That’s what I thought.

tj says what I was thinking. Power of attorney and using support services are great. Support services can introduce you to a wider network of people in the same situation.

My mum has Huntingtons Disease. It’s really quite rare, and the HD Association have been good with her. Luckily my brother is living with her otherwise she would be in care.

The last five years have been a roller coaster due to the genetic nature of the disease and repercussions on the wider family.

I feel for your mum. Good luck though. Use whatever support network is available.

Except he abseiled off the end of his rope after a successful ascent, rather than dying while soloing.

I dont think the article says that’s what happened, unless I missed it. It says the cause is unknown.

The comment at the end about knotting the rope was by someone on a climbing forum that in all likelihood wasnt there.

Psychiatric units are hospitals, not for people with behavioural issues; there are things called prisons for those type of people.

Type in Broadmoor or Carstairs into google. You will find they are called hospitals.

You work for the hse athgray?

No I don’t. I am now a teacher, but as a site based engineer for 15 years my responsibilities included monitoring fellow workers hearing for the Noise at Work Regs using a sound meter, inspecting ladders and power tools under PUWER, making sure that the COSHH folder was up to date and accessible to all, safe operation of blasting operations to ensure that we had no RIDDOR occurrences, conducting whole body and hand/arm vibration surveys and drug testing employees to comply with site rules which meant handling containers of piss and conducting site inductions to ensure awareness of site rules and risk assessments.
I have great respect for site agents who legally carry a large can, managing huge health and safety implications of those they work along side, whilst making sure they go home with a pay packet each day.
On the flip side, I have little respect for company H&S ‘experts’ with little real responsibility and teflon shoulders.

Is there such a thing as a “union rep” for a garage? I’ll be dead honest I don’t know.

I’ve seen the hse in action, two up, dog with a bone. Justified as somebody lost a digit but a raft of changes didn’t ease their intrigue! Now run by one of the most litigious American companies I’ve ever come across and the hse are regulated, (paid if theres a problem) visitors..

I dont know if this garage worker had a union rep, however is slagging of the HSE supposed to bring employees with concerns about their employers back on side?

You may berate the HSE, however if an employee has worries about the health and safety provision of their employer where do you suggest they go?

    Whistleblowers rights

Here is a link to the HSE site on rights of whistleblowers.

I am not saying it’s the case here, but how often might an employer expect employees to use equipment they have been inadequately trained to use, or how often to employees cut corners or not follow risk assessments when using equipment. There could be many issues involved in this case. Speaking to a union rep is not necessarily a bad thing.

Oh sorry, did I condone death in the workplace in my post?

No you didn’t, but you quite clearly stated the last thing an employer needs. I dare you to disagree with me on that particular point!

The days of going to work and possibly not coming home should be left in the mines and mills.

Sadly it’s not, and an atmosphere of perpetuating employees as troublemakers and that only employers should report issues to the HSE does not help.

    In what way?

The last thing any business wants is the hse crawling all over them

No, the last thing any business needs is a serious injury or death on one of their sites. I know this through bitter experience. Employees have died within one of my previous employers doing the same job as me. “It could have been me” is a cliched term but apt in the situation I was in.

Is it this real world wrightyson?
    https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/12370485.scottish-coal-fined-pound400000-over-double-death/
    That’s some utopia.

He shouldn’t be reporting it to the hse, that’s his employer’s job

No it isn’t. Any employee can report against an employer. The hse website does seem to mention the protection you have when whistleblowing against an employer.

Writyson. Sorry you are right on timescales. I was thinking of this as a dangerous occurrence, however there is a variance of timescale depending on reporting to a medical practitioner. Below taken from the HSE website.

In cases of a reportable death, specified injury, or
dangerous occurrence, you must notify the enforcing
authority without delay. You must report within 10
    days of the incident.
Over-seven-day injuries must be reported within 15
    days of the incident.
Diseases should be reported as soon as a registered
medical practitioner (RMP) notifies you in writing that
your employee suffers from a reportable work-related
    disease.
    How to report
For general advice on how you should report, see the
RIDDOR pages on HSE’s website: http://www.hse.gov.uk/
    riddor.
All incidents can be reported online, however a
telephone service remains for reporting fatal and
    specified injuries only.

Your comments regarding companies and the use are very worrying though.
