how many sizes do you reckon I should go up for MT91s if my normal shoe size is 45.5?

Ok – yes I got the speed limits wrong (working from memory), but in my defence I didn’t have a car or a bike while I was there. I said less than 50 miles, knowing it was probably less than that, but without taking the time to measure it on a map. Anyway I’m glad you like both islands – I haven’t been to Jersey

    Sounds like Jersey not Guernsey

sorry for minor thread hijack, but I know which island I was on – what a weird place this is

s absolutely pointless paying the premium for a performance car when you can’t use its performance

Agree. I went to Guernsey a couple of years ago – there is one main road round the island (less than 50 miles in total), most of it limited to 30mph and just a short stretch at 40mph. But I also saw drives with shiny new Maserati’s, Ferraris etc on them – made me smile at the pointlessness of it

even out of the city here in the rural east midlands there are loads more people cycling now than there were 10 or 5 years ago. More clubs, more events, more solos just out riding – its great

but when forced to buy a new bike

well I bought my 26er in 1996 and although it could break any day I don’t think it will. I gave it a present of some nice new wheels earlier this year and it had a new groupset last year – good for a few more years

sorry for a possibly stupid question, but is a shadow+ mech, a clutch mech?

dunno, but sitting typing at a PC probably aint gonna help

beautiful pics and a great ride – well done

but be careful around here saying things like “I think the 20 inch wheels may help” – only joking 😆

It’s a Bike, just a Bike. Once you spend more than about £1000 tbh, you are already well into the law of diminishing returns, and any change is going to be incremental.

I agree diminishing returns comes into it (but I’d probably say at a higher level) and it’s all relative as well – on the same day I also rode a carbon Scott genius for about the same price and it was far superior to the Trek

Edit (BTW I don’t have 4K to splash around – but you’d test ride those bikes if you had tthe chance)

It could be – I don’t know. Just the price was a bit gobsmacking when I found out after the test ride. There wasn’t anything wrong with it – just not exciting in any way – maybe others would feel differently

I have nothing against 650B, but they are not all the same. I rode a high spec carbon Trek Fuel 9.8 at just over £4,000 and it was really really ordinary – felt like a £1500 bike – nothing special at all

cant believe people are still guillable enough to fall for borris’ toussel-haired loveable character routine

+1, he hasn’t got much else really. He never answers a direct question if the answer is politically difficult for him

Merlin are generally good, but they did send me a badly dished wheel (although they accepted it back and re-funded with no problem). Not sure the Mavic wheels they sell are built by the Mavic facitory

put some money down for an event you’d like to do in the spring (it doesn’t have to be anything too radical) – I find that gives me something to aim for and eases the process of getting out to maintain fitness

It’s a lovely quiet place to cycle – small villages, ancient churches. sandy river banks, gentle rolling hills. We had a great week back in the day riding a Saracen Tufftrax and a Marin Palisades Trail:-)

wondering why it has been so bad in just this last few days (as compared with the few weeks just before say) – is it co-incidence or is there an explanation such as the clocks changing or the weather being worse or …?

equally, lighter wheels will be better for acceleration and cornering (as long as they are strong enough of course)

there are usually many far bigger/more important differences between two different bikes, than the change from 26 to 650B. From the bikes I have ridden it’s quite hard to feel the difference between these wheel sizes – they do feel different to 29ers though.

as to whether 650B will stay around – who knows

+1, still loving my CAAD4 10 years on!

    Me too 🙂

I test rode a full carbon 2014 Cannondale last week (which was ~£1600) and it just wasn’t better enough to sway me. It was a bit better in several ways, but it wasnt sooo much better in the way I was hoping for

look, I posted a stupid thread after feeling a bit pissed off and it was partly tounge in cheek anyway – so I got flaied a bit – OK, I deserved that,

BUT, I am not “fat”, I don’t wear “yellow lycra”, I don’t live or work in a city, I don’t ride trailcentres except maybe once or twice a year at most, I do ride more than 10 times a year (actually about 3-4 times a week), I don’t live in a cottage, I don’t have a 4K bike, I don’t have a carbon bike, I wasn’t trying to teach anyone anything and I wasn’t having a go at all farmers (as I said above)….

Thanks TiRed, that’s really helpful. I’m used to a 54 cannondale but it has always been a bit of a long reach for me and is pretty aggressive position particularly on the drops. When I first got on the 53 I did once hit the bar with my knee, but that may have just been me not being used to it. I do worry a bit though – is it better to be nearer the front wheel for climbing?
