The fight for safer cycling … should be about creating separate cycle networks from the roads

this is not the solution. it is such an unthinking statement – the idea could and should not be applied across the UK

    Vine’s show being shite.

    correct

    Irrelevant drivel.

    correct again

    He’s also a ****

    and again

I once had the misfortune to be in the same restaurant with Clarkson – He was at the next table and was surrounded by several whimpering middle-aged floosies who he bored with endless tales of places he’d been on trips paid for by the BBC licence payers – what a Knob!

there are some pretty good Cateye products that come in much cheaper than a Garmin

these don’t have GPS (but you dont need that on a turbo0 and they are quite a neat solution

but the centre of gravity will be the same

will it? the C of G of the larger wheels will be higher

Like Al says BB height depends on wheel size, BB drop doesn’t (well except that BB drop can’t be bigger than the wheel radius)

have you looked closely at the other tubes / weld areas for related damage? its hard to deform just one side/joint of a triangle

No mention of a bike though?

The rumour mill is that the body was found in a pond up there so we assume the bike is in there also.

I agree – the archipelago across to Sweden from Turku is fantastic

It’d be more interesting cycling from Noordkapp down through Norway . Lots of beautiful places and loads of small hutte to rent for the nights as you go

you are meant to actually cycle to work so if you live and work at home it can be hard to justify

    Hear, hear vs. here, here
Hear, hear (usually with a comma and set apart as a self-contained sentence) is the conventional spelling of the colloquial exclamation used to express approval for a speaker or sentiment. It’s essentially short for hear him, hear him or hear this, hear this, where these phrases are a sort of cheer.
Here, here is widely regarded as a misspelling, although it is a common one, and there are ways to logically justify its use. But for what it’s worth, hear, hear is the original form (the Oxford English Dictionary cites examples going back to the 17th century) and is the one listed in dictionaries. English reference books mention here, here only to note that it’s wrong.

I take the point about standardisation asterix, but it seems to work for most other parts on a bike so it is certainly feasible.

sorry my post was a bit harsh/tounge in cheek – I was just reflecting on the recent de-standardisation of wheels, tyre sizes etc

dimensions could be standardised across brands

As for folks saying you can pull out of them on the upstroke, not happened to me in 2 years, either off or on road.

I have ridden with SPD’s since 1996 and done it 3 times. Its not common, and so shouldn’t be a big worry, but it can happen. It tends to be when sprinting and/or pulling up and putting a lot of force through.

I agree with rocketdog – if you unclip accidentally (e,g, when climbing) then that causes nastier crashes.

Just take your time and you will get used to SPDs off road – very rarely do they cause a crash and its also pretty rare for them not to unclip when you do crash

I’ve got the Gore Alp-X 2.0 jacket, and in the best tradition of STW, I think it’s excellent. Completely waterproof, and seems to breath very well, despite having no pit zips.

it is good. It has a handy detachable hood and packs down pretty small

I’m interested here too. I read all of the thread and the useful links – thanks for those. However, for me none of the formulae cited calculate a max heart rate that is close (within ~10 bpm) of mine; they are all giving lower values – so that is a bit puzzling.

It does sound like sensible advice not to redline an old car and maybe I will take that approach coupled with some training in the lower HR zones, but it would be nice to know if there really are medical/scientific reasons for doing this

I did quite a few of the Polaris events back in the day (Kielder, Yorkshire Dales – twice?, Galloway Forest, Lakes, Exmoor, Radnor, Rothbury) and loved it. Would qualify as a generation team now – if I can convince asterix junior

first if you can boot the machine up at all take a backup of your files onto an external hard drive

then if you can boot from the original disk try to revert to a previous restore point – good luck

Interesting thread. My first reaction was to jokingly quote the comments on yesterday’s thread about why bikes were cheaper than boats and say “these group sets are for posh people” ;-)

But actually I’m interested, what would you all think if I speced Ultegra on a new Bianci with Campag wheels? Haven’t taken the time to get used to the Campy thumb shift and am more used to the Shimano stuff, although I like the faster shifting of the Campag groups. The SRAM stuff doesn’t seem to be an option with the dealers

Brilliant info – thanks guys. So it’s the Portalet – I can get the gen on that. The vid looks great. – you made an impressive thing of passing everything you came across:-). We will have to do some more thinking about the road with the tunnel

really just whether these are OK routes for riding without too much traffic / danger from tunnels etc. From the maps I cant see much in the way of civilisation up there. Dont want to drag my 15 year old over somethong too big or dangerous

glad you had some success with the mirror. when did you pay £250?, 1985 – only joking:-)

there are so many classes some attrition would be no bad thing

I agree with this, fewer classes would help

I’m too light for Phantom and probably for a 300 too, but I reckon a carbon rig would make them both easier to sail. I think the horse has bolted with the phantom development wars
