got a Hero3 for Xmas:-)) Just begun playing with it using a helmet mount – although it can feel a bit heavy. Are bar mounts good or too shakey?

After reading this thread I called C&B Seen up and express ordered a 1000 lumen light – spoke to a guy called Roger – he was really helpful and even pre-charged the light up in time for our night ride. The light is great – many thanks

    get away with huge mark-ups

    That old classic huh

Interestingly my LBS also refuse to price-match in shop compared to online but only on certain items. Frames, wheels, forks, drivetrain they match. Gloves etc you have to order online. That said they charge postage so I guess for low price items they factor the postage into their margin on the items.

Of course, they are going online only but in quite possibly the oddest way ever. You order online and then they will either post or you can collect from their shop. Which is closed. So you can collect it every second Thursday around noon.

Its not that I think we should always expect shops to match on-line prices (they do have real overheads – staff, buildings etc), but I do expect them to at least offer the customer something of an incentive to buy from them where they are obviously far from being competitive.

    well isn’t it true?

I visited my LBS with a shifter problem recently. Now my LBS (which is also an on-line retailer) has just call up and quoted me £219 for a pair of Tiagra shifters. Now I know for a fact that they sell them on-line for £189 and that I can buy them from other UK-based on-line sellers at ~£140. You can get them for less than that on e-bay if you’re willing to take a chance on a supplier in Tai Wan or wherever. When I pointed this out to my LBS they just said they ‘couldn’t do anything for me’! Seems like they don’t want the business and mostly get away with huge mark-ups.

this puzzled me a bit because on the 105 lever I have, you definitely push both levers (brake and shifter) inwards to change to a bigger cog, but only flick the inner shifter lever inwards to change back to a smaller cog. Maybe they are an older design than yours?

I just checked. I have brand new cables on, all properly adjusted by the local shop mechanic – so I am assuming that’s not the cause. The problem comes when trying to shift to an easier gear (bigger cog) at the back. Sometimes (but not always) the lever just doesn’t seem to pull on anything. Have given it a good dose of lube.

By the way it looks like 40-53 at the front with 13-26 at the back. Does that seem high gears to you?

yes it the older 105 shifters, so maybe not so surprising

Thanks, that is really helpful. I’ll try but I expect to need a new shifter then

so is there any way to know for sure which (of the rear mech or the shifter) is worn out?

Hi, thanks for the reply. Thats what I was worried about. The local shop said it was a “lazy rear mech” but I not sure

Selling your mountain bike would be an over-reaction unless you really need the money for a roadbike and you really want to swap to the road. I think you would regret selling.

no it doesn’t bother me massively – its just the first time in ages I had ridden at a popular trail centre with a gang of friends, instead of plugging away on my own somewhere more remote. Sill had plenty of fun, just thought the phones sounded out of place

it all depends what the braking surface is. I have some mavic ceramic coated rims that have lasted for years, whereas I have worn right through a pair of new but uncoated aluminium mavic rims in a weekend when biking in a granite terrane

would be interested if anyone has experience of DT rims for v brakes?

Pretty sure that someone on the forum will happily predict my death based upon the fact I will be riding a 29er hard tail.

I rode the Dragon on my fully rigid 26er a couple of weeks back, but it sounds way too risky to ride a 29er – you may die!

just get used to the high cadence – it takes practice for your muscles and brain to get used to it

but actually I never find that in practice I get to such high cadences on the road – maybe 115 for a very few seconds at the most. usually I ride between 80 and 90

    @PeterPody

well done you have focussed on and copied the part of my post that was the less important bit and therefore missed the point

anyway, drivers (including me) should always look well into the road into which they are turning before doing actually making the turn – the numpties in the videos didn’t look properly (one of them even admits not seeing the cyclist)
