I rode across a few year back – it is a great landscape. I wouldnt say true singletrack (more endless gravel, ice, rock etc – obviously there are no trees), but well worth it. You should check out the icelandic mountain biking club – crazy guys!

He’s put the starting price as the amount he agreed with me.

well that pretty much confirms that he rates you lower than anyone who bids on e-bay.

Just walk away – don’t watch the ebay auction, spend you cash elsewhere.

and if he cant sell it on e-bay, then don’t buy it or at most only pay half what you previously agreed

yes free-hubs do freeze up. I once tried to thaw mine out by leaning the hub against the end of a parked car exhaust – it didnt wok – just made the hub wetter and icier

Call me old fashioned, but yes I’m still on rim brakes – its a retro fully rigid aluminium Cannondale frame – so no opportunity to add disk brakes.

I have split rims before and yes I ended up with big long spiky bits of aluminium sticking out:-)

This is why I ended up with ceramic coated rims because they last much longer, and give better braking too

Just by chance I was there for parts of the 2012 raid, just as a spectator. It was a bit hard to understand what was going on but there were definitely runners and mountain bike competitors. It looked great

Would be interested if you could explain the route etc

I am firmly in favour of trigger shifters – I had twist grip for a while, but they can be hard to use in really muddy conditions and the grips themselves wear out

that top tube does look high at the front – try a 26inch front wheel?

my first thought was that you might have a low-level chest infection – a few years back I rode (or tried to ride) a couple of events with one and felt like death afterwards – went to the GP and his reaction was ‘well of course you feel rough’ (but I didn’t realise I had a chest infection). Cycling is different on the lungs than weights.

Second get a bottle of Milton sterilising solution for the camelbak – its great stuff. A litre bottle should be less that a couple of quid and will last for ages.

Was thinking a smaller front would be easier to lift and quicker to steer?

Yes another vote for c and b seen from me – their 1000 lumen light is great and not expensive

It’s just plain physics that there is more energy in blue than purple or red, so get a grip and stop believing all the hype. Blue will win out

Try telling that to my mate Ron. He is so much faster than you on his blue bike! And several blue bikes won enduro races last year – so get your facts right before knocking them

Thinking about what makes me buy a new bike, it things that give obvious improvements, like the introduction of suspension or disc brakes. Neither 29 inch nor 650b wheels do that. Most people looked swamped by a 29er and they steer like barges – and so are actually worse not better. I have tried a few 29ers and the things that I liked about them were all to do with them being new bikes and nothing to do with wheelsize. Seems like the industry is flailing around looking for the next best thing and sales advantage but is actually putting everything at risk by confusing the market and alienating it’s customers. So I will wait to see what happens before parting with cash

Message to the industry – please don’t drop the 26er or even downgrade it – we are not all tall enough for 29ers, which may be fine for the larger gentleman and lady

what johnellison said, but also if its very windy, lighter wheels can get blown about more

and of course if they are so light they break, that will make you slower

And steering forces are bigger for larger wheels

    asterix

Larger wheels are heavier, just think of the extra mass in the longer rims and spokes. Of course larger wheels do go over bumps more easily, but given an equal number of spokes they are also weaker

    asterix

bigger wheels require more force to steer / change direction, are heavier, and are slower to accelerate and stop – its just physics

I have the Gore Alp X 2.0 and it is great. Fully waterproof and the hood works nicely under a bike helmet. But then I am apparently from your description not an aggressive XC rider ;-)

But the middle position is in the middle and you have upper and lower limit screws don’t you. So does it matter?
