I suspect some people are so young (imagine that!) that they don’t remember toe clips with leather straps and, therefore, they assume spds etc to be clips (becasue they er clip you feet to the pedals) and so then call flats “clipless”

was just thinking to remove unnecessary weight. I only need a ~220 mm post but it is easier to buy a 300 or 350

An 80mm stem would probably work OK, but I wouldn’t recommend going any shorter than that. At some point the steering may become too twitchy with a shorter stem. But it’s an easy swap and cheap to try it compared to swapping the whole bike.

thanks everyone. I am a cheapskate too so in the end I went for a pair of ProRace 3 Lights reduced to £16.28 each

there’s just so much choice and no-one can try them all.

I’m trying to lose a few grams (current 4 Seasons are 225g) so looking at:

    Michelin Pro Race 4s
    Vittoria Diamante Pro Light
    Swalbe Ultremo ZLX

any views would be v welcome, cheers

unfortunately more likely we might see:

We are pleased to inform you that your tender was the lowest price and has been successful. We were particularly impressed with your innovative proposal to streamlining service provision by eliminating all cycle carriage and ensuring promptness and value for money by phasing out of station stops and customers.

The beast is quite long, but there are easy ways to shorten it

Newbies (and probably the more experienced) will enjoy the blue route ’cause its fun and you can ride as fast as you like/can

Basil – really sorry to hear that mate. Lost my dad at the start of last month so I know a bit of how you must feel. Am riding again now but the crying wells up now and again, and probably will for a while yet. Keep close to your family

is Tarw harder (more technically difficult) than the beast?

(For me the grading seems to take too much notice of trail length. Just because its long should that make a trail black?)

    like others have said:

if you are really bothered, then talk to the bike shop you bought it from. Your deal was with them the bike shop, not with Giant

so this thread is about CLIMBING fireroads and your argument is about rolling downhill?

and the losses involved in suspension compared to a hardtail probably made much more difference than wheel size

Best thing to do is be choosy about which bits of trail to ride. There are some good bits but don’t just plug all round the red route

The plural of anecdote is not data.

    I like that

It’s almost as if the magazines and manufacturers are colluding to avoid any scientific proof and keep the debate going.

but, in the end, you don’t have any more input power so you can’t go any faster can you

like CaptKronos says “I am more knackered at the end of a ride, but I have done it much faster!”. OK there you have it, a certain bike might tempt you to push harder and if so then you may go quicker, but you have had to put more effort in. If you don’t put more effort in then there isn’t some magical gain to make

perhaps we should change all the powerstation flywheels for bigger ones so we could magically generate more electricity for the same amount of fuel/cost 😉

    time to do something else:

    Bez – Member
You ride a bike, right? You’d like more pleasant and less dangerous places to live? You’d like to reduce the burden on the NHS? You’d like to help local economies and small traders? You’d like to be able to take your kids out on a ride from your door to the park or the shops?

Then please sign this and tell everyone you can about it:

    http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/49196

This report is the best opportunity we’ve had – or will have – for some time to transform cycling in the UK.

Even if you’re sceptical about petitions, why not sign it? Can’t hurt. If it becomes huge it’ll send a signal. And it won’t become huge without your name on it.
