Quentin Tarantino ‘presents’. Actually directed by rapper RZA.

“You can’t spell Kung Fu without F and U.”

Doesn’t sound like it takes itself too seriously, then… ;)

EDIT: Stars Russell Crowe. I’m out.

Might have been a woman buying a bike for her same-sex partner.

Who’s the sexist one now, eh?

Just got back. Really love days like this – sunny, hardly a breath of wind, cold but fresh.

Trails were generally fast and hard but still pretty sloppy in places. Nothing quite like the sting of freezing cold mud on exposed calves to spur you on. :D

Those Helly Hansen Lifa Warm ones are £25 on Amazon at the moment, Only the Large black ones though. I bought a couple and find them great.

    +1

Had always used pure merino, but bought a couple of these from Amazon and have been really impressed. Warm and wicks well. Was pretty chilly out today but that under a merino midlayer was just right.

Canyon and YT are hard to beat in terms of value for money, but with Cube you’d have the bonus of local dealer support.

The YT you’ve chosen is closer to the Canyon Nerve. The Strive is heavier and has a longer travel, burlier fork – it would probably be overkill for UK trail centres but perfect for Whistler and the Alps. Depends what you see yourself doing more of, but they’d all probably be fine as all-round bikes. Just choose the one you like most.

I just replaced my rear Larsen with a 2.35″ DHF to match the front. (While fun, the Larsen’s lack of winter grip was really beginning to get me into trouble.)

Had my first ride on it today – noticeably draggier but seems fine. Although had a slightly bizarre sensation that the tyre was flat – I actually stopped to check a few times – despite it being at the same pressure.

    Also done.

And as above, Q7 needs a ‘no’ option. I answered ‘other’ instead.

Good luck – let us know how you get on.

Not a chocolate one, but some family friends have a yellowy one and it’s lovely.

Would still prefer a weimeraner, or, for something smaller, a miniature schnauzer.

    OMFG

    Just about sums it up.

Nicely understated, given how ridiculously pimpy it is. A bit too ‘showbike’ for my tastes – I don’t really see the point in a mountainbike that you don’t want to get muddy – but that doesn’t change the fact that it really is stunning.

I won’t ask how much it cost…

Personally have a Rab neoshell jacket, not cycling specific, but amazing breathability

I’ve got one too and it’s a simply fantastic jacket.

As far as I’m aware, Polartec Neoshell is the most breathable waterproof fabric on the market, but still relatively few jackets actually using it. The newest Gore Active Shell is also very good.

You need legwarmers or longs, just peel them off at the front door. Be kind to your calves.

I don’t find that my legs get too cold – so long as I’m covered up top then that’s usually fine. Also, I’m 6’5, so longs end up as 3/4s anyway!

I prefer dry trails – who doesn’t – but living in the UK you’d never ride at all if you waited for perfect weather. I say just get stuck in.

(And work out in advance how to get from your front door to the shower without traipsing mud through your house.)

What you’ve all missed, is that Tominey has written that article based on the formula presented to her in the original “guide.”

Even if what you say is true, and I find that highly unlikely, her readers won’t know that. So while the article may have been written with tongue pressed firmly in cheek, it may still exacerbate the wider public’s already negative opinion of cyclists.

That’s almost worse – better for a journalist to be one-sided and ill-informed than reckless.

Why are so many car drivers so angry?

Why are so many car drivers road users so angry?

Why are so many car drivers people so angry? are twunts.

That’s what it boils down to, in my experience. Lots of people are just intolerant and get needlessly wound up by anything that either interrupts their life or doesn’t directly align with their personal ideals, be it race, religion, the sports team you support or chosen mode of transport.

More hackneyed anti-cyclist drivel from Telegraph’s Jan Etherington: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/9562836/Wed-just-grown-to-love-cyclists-and-then-Andrew-Mitchell-had-to-come-along.html

Some impressive sweeping generalisations: “Nobody loses their temper more often than a bike rider…Cyclists believe they are a superior race.”

Essentially, her argument rests upon the fact that former Tory whip Andrew Mitchell was on a bike when he shouted abuse at that policemen, so therefore All Cyclists Are Bad. I wonder how she feels about vegetarians, given that Hitler apparently didn’t eat meat?

24 hour TT a velodrome? Then 48 hours recovery.

I think it would take me more than 48 hours to recover from a 24 hour TT. (It would also take me longer than 24 hours to do a 24 hour TT. )

Tongue in cheek not so obvious, it seems….

I’d somehow managed to miss that thread! That settles it then – Surrey Hills it is. Might even see if I can hire an Audi for the day… :D

You must go down a storm at parties.

I don’t think mentioning dyno results has made this conversation any less suitable for parties… :D

    EDIT:

I find hilarious when people post comments like that but are wrong

    Hope Tech Evo X2 97Nm 463g
    Shimano XT M785 107Nm 466g

Though that link shows that Hope Race Evo X2s are more powerful than XT, at 110Nm.

Interesting that SLX is more powerful than XT…

I’d head to the Surrey Hills – mostly empty there nowadays….

Yeah, that might be the sensible (though less exciting) option. Also looking at Swinley, as I’ve never been there before…

    a nightmare to ride

It will be a gloopy hell.

proper “pedal to go downhill” stuff!

Yep, I think it’s best left for now.

So, anyone have any other suggestions?

    somewhere around Nice

We’re actually going over to Cologne for a five-day tour in a few weeks, but have some time off work this week so thought we’d warm up with something shorter in the UK!

Still a very poor substitute for the trans-Alp that we originally had planned for early October, but had to cancel due to work commitments. :(

This is correct, all the major brake manufacturers make brakes that work and that thousands of people use perfectly happily.

I was pretty concerned about the potential reliability of the Elixirs on my bike, given all the stories you hear, but they’ve been faultless in over a year of pretty heavy use. (They’ll now fail next ride out, of course.)

In all seriousness I wouldn’t bother. The conditions are miserable at the Winchester end and it gets tougher the more easterly you go.

Save it for another time and pick something else for now.

    Yeah, you might be right.

Okay, well, does anyone have any other suggestions for a two or three day route that isn’t currently a sludgefest and is accessible by train from London?

I wouldn’t worry about it. It’s your money – you can spend it on what you like and ride wherever you like.

As I said, I’d go for Hope Hoops and save £250, but if you want to spend more then you’d struggle to beat DT240s on either Flows or another Stans rim.

    ashfanman
    Free Member

For that budget I’d get DT240s on your choice of Stan’s rim

    That’s what I’d do.

Well, I’d get a set of ProII Evo Hoops and save myself £250, but if you want to spend £550 then I’d definitely be going DT240s on Flows.

Last Herb is 65.5 degrees HA with a low BB and short chainstays: link.

Knolly Chilcotin and Rocky Mountain Slayer also pretty low and slack.

Or, as a more leftfield choice, what about a Canfield The One? HA is 65.5 degrees with a 160mm fork, so you could get it down to 64 with an angleset… (Link.)

Try the police again in the morning. If they still aren’t interested, post a note on Gumtree, here and a few other bike forums. If nobody claims it within 28 days, stick it on eBay. Sell it, deduct the fees from the money you make and donate the rest to a charity of your choice.

I can see the appeal, but not for chain retention or even weight savings. For me, the larger range would allow me to get away with only having one front ring. (I hardly ever shift into the granny on my current 2×10 setup, but I do need it on occasion, so wouldn’t get away with 1×10.) Things have got a bit cluttered on the left-hand side of my bars since buying a Reverb a few months ago, so losing the front shifter would be great.

As said above, it wouldn’t be an upgrade I’d ever consider, but if buying a new bike and the technology had trickled down to, say, X7 or X9 level, it would be a feature I’d potentially like to have.

Dual Position Air Revs are travel adjust – it’s the Dual Air versions that are fixed travel.

I’ve got 150mm Rev World Cups, the Dual Position Air versions, and have been really happy with them. Super light, very reliable and plenty stiff enough for me too.

My legs are stupidly long (39″/40″) and i’ve got a pair of Decathlon trousers which are the longest i’ve ever found. If they’re long enough for me they’ll be fine for pretty much anybody on the planet!!

Sounds good. Just had a look at the site now. Which ones are they? (Link to their trousers range here.)

I’m 6’5 and slim, and have the same problem every winter. I’ve tried quite a few different brands over the years and haven’t found any that are even close to being long enough, so I now just ride in shorts year round.

I really don’t understand why leg length with bike trousers is always directly linked to waist size? I appreciate that the manufacturers don’t have the resources to produce endless variations of all their items, but given that cyclists are often quite slim, surely there must be enough demand from taller folk that don’t have 40″ waists?

I have some Altura trews, can’t remember what name, but they have adjustable leg length.I think the equivalent would be something like the Altura Apex with the same feature. HTH.

Hmm, that sounds interesting. How does it work, and how much extra length can you get out of them? Might have to see if I can find a pair to try on…

I ride in shorts year-round, but after yesterday’s ride I think I’m going to have to start wearing more than a t-shirt on top. Was a bit nippy.

I just called the agent and talked things through. He accepted that I wouldn’t want to keep an expensive bike in the basement and even said that he wanted to build secure, individual bike lockers for the property, but the residents blocked him.

I’ve posted notes to each of the other three flats explaining myself, and said that even though I’m confident I haven’t caused the marks, I’ll clean them this weekend. Hopefully that’ll be the end of it.
