Went HT two years ago. Started by building HT to go with FS. Ended up using FS for pootles with the girlfriend, so brought another HT frame and swaped all the parts across from FS.
Living in the Brecon Beacons most of my rides are longish XC, with occasional trail center.
Th group I ride with are on average 15 years younger than me. They reacon I’m quicker on the HT, up and down.
But main thing is I’m a lot happier and it just feels right for me.

    I swing the other way.
I threw out the full sus. Well brought a new hard tail frame. Now have 150mm hardtail for trails and 120mm for xc work.
Don’t miss full sus at all.

Exactly the same here. The inbred is designed for 80mm- 120 mm forks.
I have rebas on mine too, came supplied as 100mm. Took the spacer out of the air spring to give 120mm and put extra 10 psi so as not to sag into travel as much. Being duel air can play a bit to get best balance.

As said not a big job to remove travel spacer.
On duel air its between negative air spring and base, on solo air its just below top out bump stop IIRC

You tube cabon v steel frames.
Got carbon beechcaster been using for 8 years. Been blown over many times in gales, bends almost in half casting 6oz weight +bait no issues at all.
Had my c456 just over a year and still happy. Done all the S. Wales trail centers + CYB and Beacons would recommend without reservation.

The first 100m on the Breacon side may be bit dodgey as it doesn’t get much sun this time of year, and feeling sub zero for a few weeks with the wind, but well do able

Are you on about the 16mm hex cap or the actual 8mm hex bolt?

If head is off, then no reason you can’t remove axle.
Gives you two options, I can think of
    1. Place in vice, with two blocks of wood with “V” notch cut in each side. To protect and hold securely. Drill pilot hole in bolt and use stud extractor, from Halfords/B&Q etc.
    2. Take to local engineering firm and get it done by them.

Edit bolt is hollow so option one no pilot hole needed

Try and demo a c456 and giant trance, both good middle of the road bikes.
Then measure your grin and decide

TBH, if you upgrade the fork and maybe look at a wheelset upgrade, then I think the bike you’ll have would be more than good enough for your needs

Might find it drives better due to less load on engine trying to charge failing battery.

Probably not made of steel as it needs to be softer than the frame material, as it’s a sacrificial item.
£20 as opposed to £xxx for frame.

Heat it up, will make it more maliable and less likely to fracture
