NOT pro2’s. I’m on the third set of rear wheel bearings since July. The freehub seal just doesn’t cope with UK conditions and water sits in the ratchet area and rusts/rots the driveside bearing. The bearings are a lot smaller than the old XC’s too which doesn’t help.

On the plus side they are easy and cheap to replace.

I do wish I still had my old Ti freehub XC.

Mint Indy Fab Ti Deluxe didn’t sell last week at £800. Would have been a bargain for someone.

Having had Hope Pro2’s since last year I definately wish I had gone for the King if they are at that sort of price. Not been that impressed with my Pro2, it’s certainly not a good replacement for the old XC hubs.

As far as the spokes go, I can’t see any reason why not to go for 3x both sides.

It also adds quite a lot of weight.

Loads of companies will make you up stainless braided wires with looped ends made to your requirements. Just use these with some silver picture rail hooks.

By hanging systems, what else is there for old picture rails other than dangling stuff from it?

Tap the number (something like 6005 2rs) into Ebay to find somewhere to buy them. You should get the pair delivered for under a tenner.

What on earth have you been doing the rest of your life? I can’t imagine life pre-biscuit tbh.

Party-rings or Anzac (prefered for dunkers) and I’m anyone’s.

Is this anodized fetish an ironic nod back to the early 90’s or do people still actually buy it for colour coordination?

    I don’t mind it, I’m just curious.

All those various frames, but still no slidey-dropout 26″ singlespeed frame 🙁

(and where did the edit-post button go for spelling corrections!)

2.85lb for the 17″ mtb frame. That must be an otimistic weight surely?

Stans rims = lighter than ust rims

    …used with…

Normal tires = lighter/cheaper than usd tyres

    ….without…

Inner tubes = lighter than tubed wheels

    …used with

Sealant = lighter than an inner tube and offers puncture protection.

Other than the cost I think the Stan’s Rims are brilliant. I run Michelin tyres at 20psi and despite them not being recommended for Stan’s rims I’ve not had any problems and not punctured once despite there being several ‘Ooh look there’s sealant bubbling out I must have a thorn in the tyre’ moments.

Be sure to take out the stretch in the new cable and settle the outers into their sockets. This will speed up the inevitable bedding in on the first ride.

Without turning the cranks and with the gears smallest to smallest, give both the left and right shifter levers a firm push. Not hard enough to damage the mech’s just enough for you to feel it stretching a little. Any stretch after this can be tweeked up with the barrel adjusters.

I’ve had one and they are indeed one of the best locks on the UK market, mine sold second-hand for about 85% of it’s rrp.

The chains are huge, so a suitable ground anchor must also be purchased that will fit the hand sized links.

As said though, a battery grinder will still cut through in under a minute.

To be honest the twin Lumi’s IME are overkill. The Spot lamp helmet mounted is more, more than enough and has a perfect lightspread for single lamp use.

The Lumi headlamps are nice, neat and quite small. The toggle switch is a bit small. There are various modes operated by the single switch which works ok, but a simple high/low would have been prefered for me.

The lights are nice, but £400+ is too expensive for what is on offer with the twin kit, where as £250 is more realistic and bearable for the single lamp kit and is a great package compared to the likes of ayup, Hope, Exposure etc.

They don’t bother me in the slightest, in fact I rather like them.

With most powdercoaters charging about £20-£30 for a bare frame, it’s not worth the hassle IME.

I’ve wasted far too much time stripping and spraying stuff before, never again.

The older Dewalt stuff was great. The newer stuff has yet to keep up with the competition.

My old 14.4v XRP Combi was lovely in it’s day.

The new Makita LXT Li-ion kit is great. Ebay should get you a 2 battery kit for about £200.

Screwfix were offering the Makita NiMh 3 battery combi drill for £79.99 which is an absolute bargain for frequent DIY USE. They also have the new Hitachi Li-ion kits going fairly cheap.

Yup I’d agree Stoner, a sharperning session for my woodworking tools is usually a 1/2hr hour on a Sunday morning with Radio 4 and a coffee. On a day to day basis I’ll re-strop over leather.

A steel won’t actually ‘sharpen’ the blade as such. A kitchen knife is ground to a micro-fine edge as you need to use it for relatively soft cutting. The action of cutting and pressing the knife into the chopping board folds over this edge (talking mircoscopic here). Running the knife over the steel is actually straightening this sliver again thus restoring it’s edge.

The process of ‘sharpening’ a knife involves grinding, albeit again on a microscopic level, to create a fresh bevel. If you were to use wet/dry paper over plate-glass you would be looking at 1000grits and finer, then stropped over leather using something similar to autosol as a paste.

Often a knife will ‘feel’ sharp because running it over one’s finger you can feel the mirco serrations from sharpening over too rough a grit. In some circumstances this can be beneficial, as a serated knife cut certain food stuff’s better. A finely stropped edge will cut like a razor but won’t always feel as sharp to the touch.

To tell if my woodworking chisels are actually sharp I will shave the hairs off the back of my hand.

Provided you take care of your knives, a steel will be fine for most of the time. Once the cutting edge becomes damaged, it will need regrinding.

I had a pair of GP NiMh ‘vent’ inside a Fenix 2D. All that happened was the rubber cover over the switch inflated slightly. All was fine when the battery cover was removed and the pressure released. Battery no longer holds it’s full capacity now.

For Hope Pro2’s the SKF bearings were £11 each (£55 in total) or £1.50 for the cheap ones.

I went for the cheap 1’s!

Your main priority is to insulate the ceiling of the room below the loft. So lay the insulation between the ceiling joists up in the loft.

Insulating under the tiles directly is just going to keep your loft warm and your house cold.

Henckels seem to be the Global of 10yrs ago for TV chefs.

I have one as it came free with a Kitchen-aid mixer. It’s rrp was about £65 and I have to say in a rack of 6 other knives it is the one we always reach for first.

There are 3 in the freehub, one larger inbound and two smaller outbound. Remove the freehub by simply pulling it off after removing the axle spacer.

Check to see if the bearings rotate ok, if not then replace. Clean out all the ratchet grooves and remove and clean the pawls and springs, reassemble with only a very slight amount of grease on the ratchet and under the pawls. To replace the freehub simply push back, working the rubber seal into place on the hub.

    Very simple job.

What is annoying though is how crap the bearings are. Why on earth Hope have decided to swap to tiny bearings like that is beyond me, the old XC hubs had lovely big bearings that lasted longer than 4 months 🙁

Try weighing the frame before and after. Waxoil adds quite a lot of bulk and isn’t needed at all IME.

For that sort of money I would be looking at helmet mounting either an Ayup or Hope Vision 2.

    Anthony

To be honest you would be better buying the normal model (Winstanleys are £150 iirc) as the Max mode isn’t really noticably brighter than high and you’ll get over 3hrs on high anyway. I went for the Epic as I just leave it on high and forget about it for the rest of the ride.

I have tried a Vision 4, Vision 2, New Lumi’s, Exposure Enduro Maxx2, Fenix L2d and Tesco torches over the past few months and the Vision 2 is by far the most practical light.

I was a little dissapointed when it was bar mounted, but helmet mounted it is perfect.

Oh, and I can’t understand your logic Hairychest. You would buy an XTR chainset off Ebay, which by it’s very nature will have been ridden hard or raced if it’s selling for under £100? Replacement rings will set you back in the region of £100 and the cranks will still be scuffed.

You would be mad to look for used XTR in your circumstances IMHO.

Yes XTR cranks with replacement rings WILL be a better chainset, but with old worn rings it will feel as crap as any secondhand chainset would.

Thats odd, I really am sure my M970 cranks don’t have that step on the axle like yours fizzer. Mine run straight through at a constant diameter appart from a mirco-fine difference on the bearing areas. I also assume you have changed the chainring bolts as they are torx all round on mine.

yup the 960’s have an annoying 102bcd rather than the normal 104mm middle ring. The 970’s also have a nicer non-driveside arrangement with a solid octalink fitting.

Be aware that the outer ring alone retails for £90!!
