The thing that made the biggest difference for me in terms of running and knee pain, was to start running off road. Pavements really seem to bu gger my knees up. Good shoes make a big difference too.

I was running through a wood in the rain once, and the sound of rain falling through the branches sounded like people running out from behind the trees, coming to get me. I had to keep turning round to check. This was during the day as well, no hope – other than imaginationectomy.

That is beyond horrible. I’m a bit scared just imagining that, and now I know for absolute sure I will never, ever go night riding on my own. I get jumpy even when I’m with someone, and now I have a visual of your strung up zombie imprinted in my mind :( You could just tell me you made that up?

Has she thought of 2nd hand? My best bike bargain has been a Trek MTB I got from the Freeads for £100. It had fairly good bits on it too, is tough and has never let me down. It was my main bike when I bought it for off road, now it gets used for getting about town and commutes.

It must be ps I guess – I found it while looking for more pics of obscene veg for you :wink:

sqnumbers oh yeah……. i knew it wasn’t quite right when i wrote it, but logic’s not my strong point and i couldn’t figure out why.

I hope this doesn’t sound un-welcoming, but why a half mara if she doesn’t run? If she wants to start running then that’s great, I get a lot of joy from it and would encourage anyone. I started with 5k, then 10k races, then my first half mara at the end of last year. I do a reasonable amount, and found it really tough – it was v muddy and off road though.

Everyone’s different though, I guess building up slowly isn’t everyones cuppa. I have found the Runners World website helpful in the past, and I think they do training plans too.
