I looked at same options then went for the non series deore with steel pedal inserts and dual ring.

Now that i'm running a chain device on my fun bike i'm sort of glad i went for the cheap strong option

Downhill hardtail means it'll do the job of a few bikes.

Simple as this.. if tyre clearance is the issue.. don't exceed the sensible max for the frame.

If it's weight related don't bother. It really makes bugger all difference in the grand scheme of things.

Best of luck.. speaking of dark humour.. for the bowel cancer charity our firm raises money for we have these pants with what looks like two arse cheeks sewn in the back. Makes for good photo caption comp pictures.

Something by cube, Specialized, or Saracen.

Chances are the spec will be compromised somewhere but it's a bike that works off the peg.

Things like bars/stem/saddle which are pretty personal you could arrange to change before it leaves the shop.

Have to now decide – mountain bike or fast hybrid seeing as it's ctw.

Pal runs pikes on a trance (original frame) that make it super slack, but, it feels all the better for it. Rides like a mini downhill bike

    mr micheal

your post reminded me of blur…

    "Ernold Same"

Ernold same awoke from the same dream in the same bed at the same time
Looked in the same mirror made the same frown
And felt the same way as he did every day
Then ernold same caught the same train at the same station
Sat in the same seat with the same nasty stain next to same old what's his name
On his way to the same place to do the same thing again and again and again
    Poor old ernold same

Oh ernold same, his world stays the same
    Today will always be tomorrow
Poor ernold same, he's getting that feeling once again
    Nothing will change tomorrow

It's the bike world equivalent to buying a sports car in a bright colour or wearing a brash shirt with a suit.

    All good clean fun.

130 quid is not bad for what it is
Hell of a lot better than what same amount buys new. And its old so it's sort of coolish

I had a duster steel frame built with revs and usual mid level components.
It was quite numb to ride unless you ragged it. Only then did it feel like something interesting was going on.

It's a really good all rounder.

I've got one of the cheapest two bolt ones.
it's been on my commuter for 8 months quietly holding my saddle where i like it.
It's a simple post. Not much else to say about it.

Think i paid 12 quid on crc for one.

I've got some *insert random product name-it escapes me* baggies that hav'nt really worn as well as they should.
The seams on the crotch are coming to bits.

What annoys me is i have cheap tesco "fashion" shorts which i also use on the bike and paid 10 quid for. I've had the cheap tesco ones for years.

B.A.Nana project2's maybe a tad short for intended maxlight geometry.. but they make it feel lovely and direct.

Depends what pub i go to.. it gets locked at my work everyday for all to see..
thats when it was clean once, a while ago.

It gets minimal fettling. A few weeks ago the clip that holds the lever in place in the body of my front hope brake fell out.. i've yet to replace it.. so the lever wobbles around and involves inventive gripping to make it work.

    couple of coworkers wear them..
I sadly work in a retailing environment, so, long days on your feet are par for the course.
They do look a bit "special" so i'd think it through carefully.
They encourage you to try harder to balance and use different muscles. Eventually they end up feeling normal as you adapt to wearing them.
