Anthem x is a great bike head angle is pretty steep so techy descents can be lets say exciting!! one thing that really impressed me on the bike was the balance, it just feels so planted on the trail and corners like its on rails… in fact i was starting to think it may be the best xc bike full stop…and then i bought an epic which to be frank leaves it standing, but you cant go too far wrong with an anthem they are brill value for money

its just that time of year when winter really seems to be dragging on and on… however in 6 weeks or so (or maybe sooner) when the sun is out and the temprature rises and the trails are drying out there is nowhere else id rather be!

key is to just maintain some level of fitness, either on turbo road bike or gym so you can have a great summer, even an hour a week is better than nothing – the motivation and fitness will come back

just think of those dusty trails :D

I spent £850 on the gear set up with shop discount, im not sure id bother with the brakes stick with the avids, and when it comes to replace the cassette ill probably opt for a slightly heavier ( by about 25g) sram for half the price.

That said i have been impressed with the set up, esp the chainset which is very stiff and light.

I think you have to look at xtr as a very long term investment, i dont think ill replace it for years to come now it’ll pay for itself in reliability and im not sure it’ll go out of date soon.

worth saving up for, but not sure now is the best time to buy – id wait until they change the model year you may get a clearance deal if your lucky

Youve got a good spec on your bike as it is, i dont think it can be improved much. Id get some 2nd hand Rebas or even better Fox RL’s, have a look around flea bay im sure some will come up soon. That would save about 1/2 lb

The frame is fine, if its the M5 you wont do much better, the carbon frame isnt much lighter anyway.

I managed to get my Stumpy down to 25.5lb but it cost a mint (XTR etc etc) i gave up in the end im not sure its possible to get this type of bike much below that

Greenline models are fantastic, great to drive and very smooth at motorway speeds with the high gearing. Also if you have one as a company car they are one of the best for income tax as the skodas tend to have a very good list price c02 balance compared to other equivilents such as Insignia,Mondeo,Passatt etc etc… (hence why so many are on fleet deals)

Skoda (or VW) do skimp on some tings though…less soundproofing, lesser cabin material quality and thinner paint is used compared to the VW stablemates…they are still however on a par or better than most other mainstream brands.

Never overtaken but they do get close on some singletrack sections.

Riding everywhere in a big gear is a half reasonable way to simulate hills without actually having any.

    really? how come?

Coming from the East side myself i can relate to that, the only way round it ive found is mulitple reps. There must be a reasonable slope somewhere near you. Its a bit boring and very hard work but it will pay off. Ideally the hill should take around 2 mins to get up at a reasonable pace try a few reps to start and steadily increase over the weeks. You’ll get some funny looks but it will work.

I get what njee20 is saying to a point, high gear work is good for endurance but i would argue that it isnt simulating the same conditions as a hill climb (except when on a hill of course!)

i always thought the longer stems on xc race bikes was to get the stretched out riding position which keeps you low and aerodynamic, same thing applies to racers turning stems upside down to get even lower, doesnt a longer stem help climbing as most race bikes have a steep head angle surely with a really short stem you wouldnt have enough weight over the front wheel? just a thought…

well i dont an on-one 456, rigid, singlespeed , steel, titanium or drop bars on my mtb so i guess im screwed on here?

dare i say it but does anybody ride a specialized or trek? (sorry!)

..sorry i forgot inbred (still not sure what that is?!)

The dealer has a right to diagnose and fix the vehicle first. I would give the dealer a chance to fix it, taking it to another garage to get it looked at will always result in a long list of problems if you get what l mean.

Whats the reason the light is coming on anyway?

Skoda Fabia, VW Polo, Seat Ibiza

the A1 feels completely different to the above examples, there are components shared for sure but if you didnt already know that you would never guess by driving them

its not all about weight on XTR, there is a difference in torsional stiffness, and of course always the notion of what if….?

Wouldn’t call it crap either. In all honesty I’d rather ride around on that than a Specialized or Trek equivalent.

    joke right?

Brilliant bikes, great frames with relaxed angles. Still have my old rockhopper frame in the shed kept for sentimental value. It was the bike that got me back into mtb’ing after a long break from it.
If you are on a budget its probably all the bike you’ll ever need to be honest…enjoy

Basically my legs are as tights as a builder’s fist. When I feel the pain I stop running, hobble home and stretch, stretch and stretch some more. Especially the IT band, which is infuriatingly difficult to stretch

are you stretching before the run too?

i measured the mileage of my regular local routes using the runkeeper i-phone app, and then record the sessions on a wall calendar to keep a check on progress..i hear the garmin forerunner is the best tool which i will defo invest in when i have the money

i used parcelforce 48hr which was the cheapest i could find just check the maximum dimensions on their website, i had to cut down my cardboard bike box slightly so it didnt go over the size limit, beware some couriers calculate the weight by cubic capacity and that could be very expensive indeed. parcelforce calculate by true weight and true size so more straightforward

its nice to ride a nice course in a 24hr solo, but it becomes insignificant about 10hrs in as you go into overdrive and you only start to countdown the mile markers to the start/finish line so you get a glimpse of your loved ones and teammates drinking hot tea and eating burgers…a true misey fest…but one youll remember for the rest of your life:) enjoy

the chainset is really very good indeed, for the low weight the stiffness is incredible and it also looks the part. ive been unimpressed by the shift quality to be honest and its not worth the extra over XT the shifters themselves are very plasticy and apart from the multi downshift feature just doesnt live up to the name this time round. bear in mind also if you upgrade the shifters you should also invest in the teflon coated xtr cables at £40 a set

Unfortunately any drug (alcohol included) leads to long term issues if taken in any great quantity. Apart from that there is evidence that even the so called soft drugs cause mental health problems.

Comparing the UK to Portugal and Holland is pointless, as we have a completely different culture – we dont seem to have the self control with alcohol so whay would drugs be any different?

I would say for me a 1 hr run is the equivalent to a 4-5hr mtb race, Running does get easier as time goes on and is highly addictive once you catch the bug
..There is another thing – its much, much cheaper! I saved a fortune in drivetrain since i started running

Same with our Border Collie retriver cross, she has about 2 hrs excercise per day and still has energy for much more!! Very intelligent dog and even though she is only 13 months old everybody is amazed with the temprement and tricks she is able to do. I would really recommend and collie cross, i dont think i could handle a pure border collie from what i hear they are properly wild but i think the balance is just right with a cross.
Just bear in mind lots of time excerise (off lead) is required to get the best from them
