Ok, so it’s actually against the law to recharge an AC system with the knowledge that it’s actually got a leak, UV dye should not be used, instead you should use Nitrogen test equipment, locate the leak and fix before any R134a is put in the system (assuming that’s the correct system).

Please don’t attempt to do a DIY fix as it won’t work, beyond a couple of days or so.

Poor diagnosis on their part ref the ECU issue, they should have thoroughly checked everything prior to fitting the ECU, if this then turned out to be wrong then it’s their call to get it right, they cannot just swap and change at your expense in the hope they get it right.

Ultimately it sounds like the BCM was the issue and that is what you should be paying for, not te ECU, there is the charge for their time to be taken into consideration though.

Is the garage owned privately or a group, and who have you actually spoken to (at the garage)?

If it helps I am an Aftersales Manager at a Land Rover Dealer, feel free to email (in profile) if you want to discuss offline.

    Cheers,

    Andy.

I once had a Customer complain to me that His Airbag hadn’t gone off when he crashed, my first question to him was, are you ok? Yes he replied, so I responded with, they didn’t need to go off then did they. He walked off with his tail between his legs. Ultimately they are an intelligent system, that react to inputs from various sensors all around the car, and if the haven’t gone off, chances are they didn’t need to.

Well we are probably £20-£30 p/h more than the local Ford garage, their costs are probably 1/4 of mine, so I doubt that very much.

But at the end of the day it’s about the service given, if it’s good then the Customers will come back.

I manage a busy Prestige garage, we pay approx £8000 per month on ‘writedown’ for our loan car fleet, coupled with approx £800 per month for insurance. I’d love to be able to charge, but there is now way we’d get away with it.

Ensure the screen is clean, the sensor works on a prism, if there is grease or a film on the sensor it will confuse it. Use vinegar to clean it.

I work for a Land Rover Dealership mate, I’ll get a photo out to the Land Rover Regional Teams and get them to Distribute around the UK network, that won’t help bring it back but it will put it on everyone’s radar in the Network……

It’ll be HID (high intensity discharge) Xenon in other words. The reason they are so expensive is they come with ballast as part of the unit. Should be covered under your 3 year manufacturer warranty.

Yeah your right aracer, but everyone in BMW world use them, I worked for them for years, in the UK & Middle East, wherever you go they are referred to by their E or F numbers, I suppose it’s easier to identify which one, I’m with JLR now and have even started referring to their product by the engineering code, getting some odd looks though :?

It’s BMW’s engineering codes, most manufacturers use them. The new Range Rover is L405, the previous one was L322………….

So you’ve an hour/hour & a half of their time, 5+ ltrs of oil, filter, the Mazda knowledge, and support if anything goes wrong, i.e. 12 months warranty, possible bit of Mazda/Dealer Goodwill if anything BIG goes wrong and you think £180 is expensive?

I pay in excess of 25k per year for access to all the Manufacturer systems, Tech support etc…….

These Guys need to make their money somehow, yes I agree there are some Cowboys out there, and yes a lot of them are main dealers, but £180 for a service aint expensive!

It’s not all doom and gloom mate, although it may feel that way initially. Your son is similar to my circumstances in some ways. I joined the Royal Marines at 16, approx 26 weeks into my training (just when things were starting to get really tough and I was relishing the challenge) I had a weekend at home and felt weak etc……. Back to Lympstone and training wasn’t going anywhere I felt terrible, no strength, peeing and drinking, went to the Doc, few tests later and I’m diagnosed as Diabetic, I thought the ar53 had fallen out of my world, back home with no idea where I go from here, but a very understanding family and some fantastic support from them, makes it easier. 29 years later and I’m fit, there is nothing I cannot do, some limitations yes but in essence I live my life like the majority of my friends. So look forward and don’t dwell, also it won’t be long before the cure is out there. Good Luck.

tpbiker – I don’t have any links mate, but I am in the trade. I would speak to the garage first and foremost, if you don’t get anywhere then log a call with trading standards also might be worth while complaining via Evans Halshaw head office.

Any used vehicle purchased should be ‘fit for purpose’ for 6 month from purchase, there are many different interpretations of this but the basis is all used car must be guaranteed for 6 months, it’s the law.

Just a quick bit of advice. Assuming you’re going for something 2nd hand, then a bank loan will pay for the car outright…… However car finance is ultimately HP linked to that vehicle, god forbid for anything serious to go wrong, but if it did and the Garage didn’t want to play ball then you have a big legal backup to you in terms of the people who ultimately own the car, ‘the finance company’

Freelander 2 here. Nice car, but terrible quality.

    – rear diff went 3 weeks outside warranty. LR not interested
    – known steering rack fault – again LR not interested
    – door locks gone one by one
    – rear door lock gone twice

If you’ve a full LR Dealer Service History LR should’ve paid up.

A good mate of mine picked some up (in a bag of course) he then walked up to the offending human and said ‘excuse me I think you’ve dropped something’ when human held out his hand, my mate proceeded to empty bag contents into it…….. He’s also quite a big hard b45t4rd too so got away with it.
