I’ve sent a question off to a well known suspension tuner, I’ll let you know if I hear anything

Have they been extended more than they should? I bought some off CRC and was told I could extend travel to 160 from the 120 they came with. I did that and got top out clunk so phoned the importer and he said the model I had were only supposed to go to 140 despite the internal rod being able to go to 160.

    Gratuitous photo opportunity.

I haven’t had any trouble with mine but to be fair, this bike spends its days in the woods just dealing with roots. I wouldn’t dream of taking it anywhere rocky, got another bike for that

Infuriating ins’t it. I’ve logged on regularly with my tracking number and the status hasn’t changed from ‘handed to customs’ for over a week. I’ve got this mental image of a customs official with his feet up on my box reading The Sun. summer will be over by the time I get these wheels built up

Does this sway the decision at all?

I borrowed one for a couple of days. Quite agile and playful but very harsh ride

The Putoline stuff I don’t find a faff at all? Easier to take a chain off with a split link and throw it in a pan than to try to clean it with a chain cleaner. and then relube it.

A 20 quid tin really will last several generations of your family even if, like me, you do it once a week simply because I don’t mind. How long does an £8 bottle of LBS lube last these days?

I take the chain off once a week and use this. Doesn’t attract dust, lasts ages, easy to do. Place pan on hob, melt wax, put the chain in, swish it around with a spoke and fish it back out. You don’t have to clean it first either, comes out pristine. Wipe off the excess and put it on the bike. One tub would, I think by current usage, last at least a lifetime and you may even be able to pass it on to your kids. Whole job takes about 5 minutes.

I’ll get them in the classifieds when I’ve got some photos

Would you like a set of lightly used 140mm revs?

RCT solo air version, all black uppers and lowers, steerer cut to 170mm, tapered, 15mm Maxle

I paid 600 odd 6 months ago, would be happy to sell for 350

I don’t care if times have changed or not, I’ve just built this and it’s frikin awesome, you just need a bit of inspiration.

Big thanks to all the guys at BETD Goldtec for helping with the build. Get yourselves to one of the best bike shops around!

Was there a front wheel nearby, the rest of the bike hanging from a tree and distant cries for help?

    Halfords spray wax.

    http://www.halfords.com/motoring/engine-oils-fluids/grease/halfords-chain-wax-400ml#tab3

Supposed to be for motorbikes but works great. Doesn’t pick up too much dust and even when the dust is washed/wiped off (what little there is) the wax remains.

Not a good idea to limit fluid intake but I weigh up the negatives (weight penalty, bottle dropping and taking me/others out, shit all round the spout, having to clean it all) and ask myself if it’s necessary for a 2 hour blast which, on a club ride, means 1 hour of riding and one hour pissing about.

Of course a camel back stops some of those issues but they’re still a pain in the arse to clean. I’ll stick with post ride beer unless it’s an epic ride somewhere far flung, in which case it’s port and brandy in the hip flasks.

Hydrate well before you go and you don’t *need* anything for up to 2 hours, have a drink when you’ve finished, or a San Miguel works well for me. Did you know the act of burning glycogen liberates water anyway? Every gram burned releases 3 grams of water that goes straight back in to plasma volume.

I’ve used any old cheap washing up liquid and hot water for over 30 years, I wash my bikes regularly and have NEVER seen any hint of corrosion on bikes that I’ve done it to for years despite the horror stories you hear

    Marketing BS sells bike wash

I’ve recently simply put it quite strong in a squirty bottle and that works well too with a paint brush on the nooks and crannies followed by a hose off

A kettle full of boiling water cleans contamination of brake discs and pads just as well as a tin of expensive disc brake cleaner

Cut a broom handle to the required length for the bottom of the post to butt up against while the bottom of the broom handle sits on the BB shell. Simple, light, low tech and effective

Maybe I should’ve said something…got me thinking now, cheers, maybe we’re a bit too British and don’t complain enough.

So there you go, my position statement. I’m all for allowing public right of way on public trails but some common sense should be shown on a trail centre that everyone knows is over run with mountain bikers moving at speed. The last thing I want to see when I’m descending and come round a switch back is a startled dog launching itself in to my spokes and sending me in to the undergrowth. Don’t walk your dog at a trail centre, Cannock chase is massive, go elsewhere.

I said ‘how do’ in a tone of voice that said, ‘yes, you’ve been irresponsible and could have caused me and your dog severe injuries, walk your dog somewhere else’ and then carried on riding back to my shitty little mitsubishi colt

    andybloomer

The guy that had his trail dog at Cannock yesterday slightly ruined a good decent for me and if I’d have rolled over it, I’d be the bad guy. I think you should f*** off with your dogs. It’s a mountain bike trail centre 🙂

    Yep

    Roads too narrow/cars getting bigger
Roads more busy/everyone in a rush
    Drivers more intolerant
Hate seems commonplace/courtesy has all but disappeared
slower road users viewed as a barrier

Get off roads and back to green space and everything is fine and dandy again.

25 years as a roadie, wish I’d tried this much earlier
