Had a go on the giants today as in the same boat. Lovely looking bike but the ultegra spec (was £1200) was noticibly lighter that the 105 spec (£1000). Pretty tpted but would like to try the planet x offering

Only been once myself but I really enjoyed it, especially the climbing and theaon decent (shop side loop). Pretty short though so need to do a few laps of the same thing

Interested in this as just bought a kinesis crosslight to commute to work (old and a bit of a shed but I love it)

What kind of distance or time are the races over?

[/quote] i say this having employed a lad who declared on his application that he had a weak arm following cancer who subsequently years down the line virtually had his arm removed whilst holding a rope that suddenly snatched… even though i had offered him the help of a colleague to hold the rope which he refused i was found liable as i should have insisted as i was previously aware of his potential for injury.

Despite this total shell, you don’t seem to have really grasped it yet.

My mind couldn’t compute it to be honest. My first thought was that it was a plane crashing and my second that we were being invaded! From a distance I thought it must be a herc but no mistaking when it came over.

    Not something you see everyday.

A Lancaster went straight over my head at about 5pm today as I was heading up towards two lads.

Never seen anything like it…. And felt like I could have reached up and touched it it was that close.

    Anybody else see it?

I’d buy the best spec I could (prob the decathlon hardtail or similar), sell the hardrock and buy a cotic or trans am frame or similar. Transfer it all over them sell the original frame.

You’d then have a really decent spec bike and will only be into it for a tax free 1k.

The price of off the shelf bike scare me to death though to be honest.

That’s greats guys, thanks a lot. I’ll check them out and give them a go.

Nobeerinthefridge – do you happen to know when and where they ride? A midweek ride with locals would be ace

Montane singletrack has been great for me. Never runs too warm and keeps most of the rain off. Been a great jacket but not sure if they make it anymore

Mines a 2005 and does 25k a year. Had it for two years now with only servicing and tyres needed. All for the princely sum of 1400 when I bought it. If have another after this for sure

The track between the two barns doesn’t get locked or shut off so you’ll be fine there. The last time I rode past at night a couple were going at it hammer and tongs in a builders van.

The one time I was on my own and I had no one to share the comedy with

Check out bicton which is where I lived or anywhere on the Stirling highway. Easy access into the city and beaches / Fremantle ect

Only my opinion of using them over 18 months or so. I guess my point is that you’re still smoking so you’re never a non smoker as such and it’s easier to just slip back into it.

Also as pointed out above, after a while it’s just in your head so it’s the habit of puffing on something and having something in your hand all the time.

However if it helps anybody quit then it’s got to be a bonus

The problem I found with the e cigs is that you’re not breaking the addiction. When the ecig breaks (and they do frequently) then you may well end up buying a pack again ect ect.

The side effects of swapping to an ecig were nothing at all but when quitting completely my lungs cleared out tons of tar and other gunk. Said a lot to me

You’d definitely be better off with a road bike and probably enjoy it a bit more.

Why not look at a 2nd hand bike and then sell it on after the event? You’re unlikely to lose much if any.

It’s great, did 3 years living in nedlands/cottesloe. The prices you get used to quicker than living in the middle of nowhere, you really are isolated in Perth.

Beaches, lifestyle and biking all great

Looking after a new-born is pretty full on and I’m sure your wife would appreciate a few hours respite at 4pm everyday.

Still I’m probably not the most balanced on this issue due to spending my childhood pulling bikes out of the scrap metal skip and doing them up.

But do you not get the feeling that its consumerism gone mad? The magazines just pedal this stuff and the next week it’s there on the trails..

Guys bobbing around in £100 cycling tops and £100 shorts… What’s wron with just chuCking a t-shirt on and riding your bike?

I didn’t say that they would.. But what’s wrong in buying a 500 hard tail and upgrading as your skills and fitness progress?

Its like the guy at work who’s on 25k yet feels the need to finance a 30k Audi. I’d argue that the ones who need the fancy gear for no reason other than vanity have the problem.

I ride more miles than I drive. About 6000 miles a year or 100-150 miles a week on average. Thats without any big Audax-type rides, just club runs, commuting and the odd sportive.

This is why I like to keep millage records. If I’m driving more than cycling then its time to look at why and get some balance back with my working life.

On about 6k commuting and road. Don’t measure the mountain biking

If I had a 6k super bike I’d have to make sure I was the fastest rider around these parts. It’s the same as the team sky brigade with matching socks, top, helmet ect ect, carbon super bike and a beer belly walking up hills.

Call it what you will but its not jealousy. I’d rather be a fast rider on a average/cheap bike than slow and unfit on an expensive one

Have these on my old lava dome and they are great in the dry to be honest.

Really quick and grippy. I think somebody sells them on eBay for under £30 the pair

Get the reduced Scott cr1 pro frame (can’t remember which shop but there is a thread on here about them) £450

Ultegra groupset and wheels £750 merlin

Leaves £300 for some nice finishing kit or £250 and £50 for lbs to pit it all together

It’s what I’ve just done and you’d be hard pushed to find a better bike for £1500 in my opinion

Good riding and the bowling club does great food and beer. Propbably 30-40 mins from Rochdale

£800 easily on eBay I’d have thought. It amazes me the prices 2nd hand road bikes fetch on there
