Have just got a oat / milk stout going in the fermenter yesterday.

Currently have a New England IPA and a stout on tap.  Imperial stout maturing in bottles but needs another few months.

My fermentation chamber is an old fridge with inkbird and a greenhouse heater. A freezer would probably be better but the old fridge was free as it came with the house.

Is the red brick rye a copy of the one from the brick brewery – that’s a really nice pint, what recipe are you using?

Russian Imperial stout bottled after a couple of months in a keg, have a nice stout on tap which had a lot of brown malt in the mix which I hadn’t used before.

Also have a new zealand pale on, this appears to have ended up like a replica of thornbridge green mountain.

I ran 150mm. My post above was inadvertently negative sounding – it was a very versatile and fun bike.

I got 4 years out of mine before the chainstay cracked, it was the fluorescent yellow first version. I got it 2nd hand but don’t think it was used much before me. Rode well down and was a good fun bike, was slightly portly and could wallow a bit climbing, bottom bracket pretty low.

I looked at replacing chainstay but was about 350 pounds. I also noticed the start of a crack on seat tube so decided to retire it.

It got a good innings, mainly peak district but a fair amount of lakes, dales and scotland too – I think tenerife finally killed it just before corona nonsense started…..

Thank you – that’s really useful to have a look at (and wonder about getting up all those hills)

Thank you for organising Rich. Is the route map available now to have a look at or will it be a bit closer to the time?

I was going to give no chilling a go – seems more environmentally friendly in terms of water use and probably gives the fermenter an extra sanitization effectively. I still have one plastic piece inside to get rid of first – half a john guest fitting which holds the hop filter over the dip tube – I have a stainless steel bit that needs a hole drilling in it when I get round to it.

I hadn’t heard of the cube hopping but sounds like a good idea – kind of an extension of all the late addition/whirlpool/hop stand.

Sharing out the kit sounds like a good idea – you could do a bottle swap after and compare results too.

I’d been keeping an eye on this thread for a while but not posted. Have been homebrewing for a few years with a plastic bucket fermenter then bottling. During lockdown things have perhaps got out of hand, but perhaps not as much as some people on here.

I’ve set up with a keg system – 3 11L cornelius kegs and have got a 19L keg converted with a filter and short dip tube to run as a stainless fermenter. I’ve butchered one fridge to turn into a kegerator and another to make into a fermentation chamber with one of those temp controllers and a greenhouse heater.  There are definitely fancier set ups out there but this seems to work and I quite like the smaller volumes of the 11L kegs to give more variety.

Currently have a Rye IPA and golden ale on tap, there is an imperial stout lurking in the back of the cellar to mature and a porter fermenting away.

I have got a new bottling attachment to play with that plugs into the taps on the fridge but haven’t actually had a go with it yet.

Main problem is not being allowed people over to share it at the moment.

Mine used to seize when you pulled the front cantilever brake, due to the high quality rigid construction of the lowers.

I had been looking at the stage 4 and now the stage evo as a potential new bike. It looks good but seems very spendy!

Was in fresh goods Friday a few weeks ago so presumably some form of singletrack review coming in next few months?

From my own dubious home brewing making the very hoppy beers, especially with dry hopping can end up quite expensive to make. Certainly making a basic bitter at home is cheap but a big mix of fancy hops adds up in the end.

Plus beer duty scales by alcohol so the typically stronger canned craft beers will be more.

It’s nice to have the choice, there are some lovely bottled and canned beers about. We have some good pubs nearby doing hand pull & keg takeaway. Hopefully soon we’ll be able to drink them in the pub again – sensibly/safely as well as technically legally.

There is some lovely stuff linking through from holmesfield, barlow, linacre. Can head back via hewitt’s bank or big moor / frogatt.

Holds up less well in winter I find, not super technical but some lovely long sections. A bit of road work to join things up.

Have been doing a fair bit that way with the nice weather over last few months and more popular bits of the peak being busier.

Lots of nice bits mentioned. Don’t discount areas which aren’t right on the edge of town. One good thing (amongst many) about Sheffield is that there are lots of strips and patches of ancient woodland, parks and green spaces that let you wiggle out almost entirely off road even from further into town.

I used to live in Dore and it’s amazingly handy for Blackamoor and getting into the Peak. I’m now a bit further in towards Woodseats/Abbey lane and there’s a bit more of a centre going on, but I can still get out on bike or foot through the woods to the Peak really easily.

Definitely worth coming up and having a wander/ride round the areas mentioned and see what you think. Your budget should give you lots of choice.

Thanks – I suppose 2 cameras would also be an extra thing to forget to charge/set going/connect to bike!

Since lockdown has eased my Sheffield to Bakewell weekly bike commute has got bad again, with lots of close passing. Had been thinking of a camera and these look interesting.

Are people running just the one at the front or a pair to look both ways?

I just had a very stuck reverb removed as detailed here, he certainly works with carbon stuff too:

I got the pie from halls and it was good, however Bowen’s seems to get all the internet Fame and is very nearby. Perhaps I need to get the seatpost stuck again to go and do some more testing!

I’m not sure what magic he used but I don’t think I could have done any more to it. I really didn’t fancy using caustic soda on it.

Lots of good suggestions above, the other place that is nice for gentle stuff is  around tideswell, lots of quiet lanes and rough tracks – can be linked to eyam as mentioned above or out to great hucklow or drop down to a section of the monsal trail.

Linacre circuit was riding really well last week, the worst bit for brambles was always the descent to the Ford after turning up the hill from the pub in Barlow ( was the pump now yet another peacock) . That seems to have had a lot of cutting back a year or so ago and is a much nicer experience now.

Maybe they’ve been influenced by the “one bike to do everything” thread on here yesterday and are whittling the range down slowly to one bike to rule them all…..

I was looking at the stage 4, just found cracks in my  transition scout and have been really enjoying the 29er solaris. However missing the full sus.

I e mailed orange after seeing the stage 4 disappear, they got back in contact and said there would be a replacement, but may not be till latter part of this year.

I always enjoyed the issue 2 article about doing an off road coast to coast in 24 hours – definitely prompted me to ger out and have a go at it. Not in 24 hours though, well, not at all in fact for the first attempt, but did get all the way across eventually!

Yes, I commented that private cars should be included – does seem a strange way to go about things, but it is Sheffield City council.

Has anyone else had any luck ordering the 2X11 version, I had a message back saying they could do it and how much it would be last week, I replied, but it’s gone a bit quiet since then? Does anyone know the phone number? Thanks

Lots of nice areas mentioned above.

Millhouses is nice with excellent schools, may struggle to get a large detached for 500k. Handy for getting out to the Peak via Ecclesall woods then Dore/Whirlow.

Beauchief & the SW end of Woodseats may be worth a look as well, friendly with a  good shopping centre with butcher / fishmongers, good cafes, curry etc. A mix of housing and lots of strips of woodland that let you ride largely off road to the Peak. Also handy for getting up to the A61 for commuting to Nottingham

I’ve donated, I think it’s a good cause if done sensitively like the previous bits of work done on there a few years ago. Out of interst are there any figures as to how close to the target the donations are so far?

I’d much rather have the interesting grinder reviews than “we’ve tested 25 very similar SPD’s” in the group test.

Woodseats is cheaper than some bits but still nice, with its own shopping centre. Quick access to the Peak via hutcliffe/ecclesall/abbeydale woods and Beauchief abbey grounds. Not as quick as dore / lodge moor/whirlow etc but prices more sensible.

Generally very relaxed with regards to number of bikes on Northern Rail between Manchester and Sheffield.

There’s always going to be some road unfortunately, at least it’s much better now legally than it was a couple of years ago.
