That was my 4th time soloing at Bikefest and was by far the toughest! I managed 18 laps in Proper Old Gits category and have some serious aches and pains! I feel like a Proper Old Git today 😉

I didn’t have too many issues with grip on the first section but I was running about 18psi in the front so that may have helped. Plus I’m not exactly the fastest on twisty singletrack.

I looked at the jump at the end and didn’t think it was a good idea as I was just about managing to stay upright! 🙂

Also have the Pro Line 365 bib shorts. Only used them a few times so far but wore them at the FoD Wild Boar last weekend for the best part of 4 hours and they were pretty comfortable. The bib part is a little on the warm side but it has been fairly warm recently anyway. Probably won’t notice once normal summer conditions resume. Would agree that they seem quality and well put together.

Were the good readings taken at the doctors surgery or in the quiet of your home. White Coat Syndrome maybe? I regularly take my BP at home and 95% of the time it’s fine. As soon as I step foot in the surgery it’s through the roof!

Alcohol raises the BP so if you’d had a heavy weekend that could account for it 😉

Did the Full Boar and started with just over 1.5l and didn’t stop at all. Ran out about 2 miles from the end. It wasn’t until about a hour after that I realised how badly dehydrated I was. I drank a litre of water on the journey home, another half litre when I got home, continued trying to rehydrate but still had a head ache going to bed!

Thanks, it was my first port of call but they’re out of my price range 🙁

    There Good

    Cheaper here

Not really cause they’re not fitted! 😉

I’ve had them on my SS for 4 years and not had to touch them apart from pads. They work like they came out of the box, very well.

One set of cycling clothes lasts me all week 🙂 I am pretty lucky with my works facilities though. I have a place to hang my damp clothes so they air and dry and I shower as soon as I get into work. As soon as I’m home the clothes go on the radiator and they never seem to smell! Or maybe Mrs J is just very tolerant 😉

This is unbelievable! I posted a faulty Garmin using Royal Mail Insured this morning. At no point was I asked what was in the package and the only question I was asked was do I want it insured. I was not given or made aware of their Terms and Conditions at the point of the transaction either.

Pretty shoddy stuff, I’d go down the route of you not being asked what was in there and not being made aware of their T&Cs.

We have 3 lockable showers cubicles (one for disabled), they are 4 years old, are cleaned every day and even have electric heaters in them for those cold winter days 🙂 Sorry I’m probably not helping! 😛

My son (15 year old) flatly refused to take any sort of tools or tubes with him. Cost him a 6 mile walk home a few weeks ago and I don’t think he’ll make that mistake again!

I’ll always stop for someone who’s run into problems on the trails. But I’ve got fed up with stopping for commuters who have punctured and have nothing to aid themselves. I must pass 2 or 3 a week pushing their bikes with a flat!

I’m 50% 19 minutes faster than the person in 2nd place although there are only 2 of us who have ridden the segment lol 😉 I suspect he was just out for a gentle ride!

Depends really. If I commute from home it’s a 58 mile round trip which is too much to do every day. So I tend to put the bike in the back of the car and park half way making it around a 30 mile total cycle commute.

Not cycling at all at the moment though as I had a hernia operation 2 weeks ago! 🙁

    would Sudocream suffice ?

Apparently sudocream isn’t so good. After a Gorrick it had turned to glue. Made me smart it did. Had a very smooth bum afterwards!

I’ve done 12 and 24 hour solo events and have only ever used Sudocrem. Great stuff and a fraction of the price of the cycling specific creams. It has the added benefit of being antiseptic too!

12 hours solo for me but this time I’ll be doing it with gears and a suspension fork as I’m getting soft in my old age.

I’m riding with the Loco Racing team, black tops with Loco on the back. So when you pass me some encouraging abuse would be welcome!

Won’t be the same without you Rickon! 🙁

My claim to fame is I took one off Matt Page a few months back 🙂

In fairness when he did it he was 40 or 50 miles into the Brecon Beast and when I took it off him I ridden about 3 miles from my house 😉

Have you tried taking it apart, cleaning and re-greasing? Sometimes they just need a good clean out.

You’re probably better off using the 29er. Yes it would be nice to have the Orange 5 on the Gap but that descent is only 2 miles out of 100k. There’s a lot of road and fire road that’ll make you glad you rode the 29er.

Have you heard of Strava oldgit? I think this would be great to help with your motivation. Have a look at the KOM sections for your local area and see if you could beat some of them.

+1 for Strava as a motivational tool. I entered the Base Mile January challenge with a goal of averaging 20 miles a day throughout January. Despite the snow I ended up doing 624 miles with a day to spare!

Although the next challenge may be a little too much so soon in the year! But I’ll give it a go 😉

Here’s a pic but with road tyres on

Because I had a load of bits hanging around. So I thought I’d build a commute bike for the worst of the winter conditions to save my nice shiny road bike from getting trashed during the dark months.

I’m running my old Maxlight XC120 with 29er wheels and CX tyres. I can’t remember off the top of my head how big the back tyre is but there’s loads of clearance. I would have thought any 700cc tyre will fit in there because they are 28″ high and obviously width isn’t an issue.

I’m using 440mm carbon forks on the front and as mentioned above I can fit a 29er tyre in there with loads of clearance.

When I used to do a bit more winter climbing one of the tricks I used to use was cutting the toes off an old pair of mountaineering socks and pulling them over my arms from wrist to elbow.

There is something in this. I’ve started wearing knee length ski socks under my tights and my feet are noticeably warmer.

For cold dry conditions I use a pair of fleecey Thinsulate gloves with glove liners, used them in -10 conditions and still had warm fingers. Cost me about £7-8 in total. My Sealskinz winter gloves are ok if it’s wet and above freezing but need a liner when it gets around 0 deg and are no good below zero.

I thought this was going to be about all the muck, grime, grit and flooded roads that afflicts my drivetrain and clothes at this time of year, perhaps with an interesting argument about the pros and cons of going fixed until the rain stops.

Instead it’s yet another terminally dull thread about doping, rehashing the same tired old arguments.

+3 I’m having to clean the road bike very evening after my commute!

They are both good loops in the dry but at this time of year they are going to be a little hard going. Where as the Gap loop is mostly rock based and is good all year round the further east you go the more soil based it gets.

Are you based near Talybont or are you just fancying riding that area?

No so much a ride but an event, the Dusky Valley 12 in September. Great course, great organisation, great company and we won too!

I must be an interesting case as my Doctor email’d a NHS Physio for advice on treatment. The Physio rang me just now and said she could fit me in at 11am tomorrow.

Never let it be said that the NHS is slow! 😉

Thanks for that. I suspect I may have had this for some time and it was only the fact that I’ve torn my Abductor muscle and went to the Docs that it was discovered. As with you it doesn’t hurt at all.

Helpful sizing guide that, the bike is in cms and the guide in inches. I would have thought 51cm to be more in the region of a 16″ as I ride a 16″ MTB and a 51cm road bike. But as above ring the shop for advice.

I still shy away from the subject when my wife (keeps) asking me when I’m going to have it done. Makes we wince.

Go to the segment page. ‘Actions’ > ‘Edit’.

You don’t get the option to edit the title that way, just the length of the segment.

Also a bit shocked, done 82304m since I bought my GPS in April. But I do live in Wales so it’s difficult to avoid a bit of climbing! 😉

It’s a tough one for sure. When I was training for a 24 solo I wasn’t doing those sort of hours. Having said that I’m not doing bad with 11.5 hours bagged so far! I do a lot of commuting on my bike 😉
