I’ve got Reynauds and often get what the OP describes, if i get really cold especially if wet too,  it can ages to get proper feeling back. I’m used to it, know what it is and I don’t worry.

If the son has other symptoms – in my case fingers go white really easily and don’t bend properly when cold, propensity to chill blanes and generally just feel the cold a lot more than everyone else, it could be that, although I’m surprised he could have got to 14 without being aware.  If it’s not that then I don’t know

So why aren’t they allowed T-cars any more?

It (almost) made sense pre-budget cap but I really can’t understand it now. That’s Sargent mid season, imagine if that happened to one of the title contenders at the deciding race.

Are there any negative implications of doing this? Sorry for the thread hijack. I’m tied into a ridiculously low rate for another two and a half years. It would make sense for me to switch to interest only for as long as I can, pay that and put what I would hace used to pay capital into something which pays a lot more interest. Would this screw up my credit rating or anything? Can you use this six months interest only thing more than once?

Ive always liked the Alligator ones, have a look on XCRacet or Mt Zoom, they’ve got an eBay shop too. Last ages and decent power

No idea if they do SRAM Force though but worth a look

I might just be me not being in “the industry” or being a bit too SE, but £27k doesn’t feel like it reflects the person spec

You might have got used to SE pay, round here (Tweed Valley area) that’s a decent wage, and you can easily buy a house for 3x that salary.  1.5x if you are prepared to live in Hawick… Isn’t Merthyr one of the cheapest areas of the country, or has that changed in the last few years?

Pretty much anywhere in Edinburgh just put them in the car, should be loads of room without the people in it, not worth the risk

There’s also the argument that his paranoia and repeated sacking and reshuffling of advisers and senior officers is of strategic benefit to Ukraine.

This became a thing in about 1944, the allies decided that Hitler was of more benefit to them in power and so left him alone.

The beer hall bomb of 1939 would undoubtedly have done a lot of good had it worked, but the von Stauffenberg attempt in July 1944 would not have benefited the allies at all, they had stopped trying by then.

Mostly ok for me but there’s been a refund sitting there for three days with nothing happening, had another the day before which made it’s way into my account immediately

My reason for no black box is the times of day she may be driving due to work hours, possibly early starts (4-5am) and late finishes (2-3am).

    Blimey that’s a long shift!

ie I transfer £5k between a FTSE 100 tracker and an all-share tracker without withdrawing money, I can still invest up to £20k this year?

yes – provided the money stays within the ISA wrapper. You can chop and change funds to your hearts content.

Mostly. That’s correct in theory. In practice check the T&C’s of the ISAs, some providers get a bit funny about transfers but there’s no legal or tax implications against it, and most are fine with it.

The trouble with a lot of these ‘ethical’ investments is they don’t invest in arms manufacturing. A lot of weapons makers found it difficult to raise money by issuing new stock when looking to increase production in light of events in Ukraine.

And it looks like Hammond is in a Mk1 Capri

I think I saw a Stag in it too

Might finally settle a playground argument from 35 years ago, who’s dad did have the fastest car?

In my class the contenders were – my dad’s Stag (the biggest engine, so clearly fastest), a Datsun 240Z (probably the actual fastest, but I would never have admitted it at the time), a MK1 Capri, a Mk2 Capri, a Renault Feugo (when did you last see one of those?) an XR3i, and a 900cc MK1 Fiesta, although he never really joined in.  The teachers had an MGBGT and and MG Midget, the other two walked to work.

Do young boys still argue about that nowadays? Modern ones all seem a bit boring. How many primary classes nowadays would have almost exclusively sports cars/hot hatches?

What is the coolant leak? I had one in the heater matrix on an old Peugeot. Like yours a right PITA to get at and not really worth doing. I cut the inlet and outlet pipes and joined them together, and then bought a 12V heater to sit on the dashboard. Not ideal but it worked.

Personally? I’m vegetarian. Big win, at no cost whatsoever to me.

    Globally, a carbon rationing scheme.

I’m with James. Don’t look for anything specific, look for whatever has the longest MOT and the least rust and the biggest service history

We sent one of the company cars back at work, they charged us a small fortune for various things (£2k IIRC)

They put a big emphasis on cosmetic stuff, scratches and dents but didn’t charge us much for losing the service history. I found that very odd, if I was buying it no service history would be a much bigger issue for me.

Anyway, I can see why people get so precious about lease cars if every little scratch is that expensive. It’s a level of stress I can do without

My ex wife had a smaller Dahon folding thing.

It was terrible, I’m never felt completely safe riding it, there was so much flex and play in everything. The small wheels were a nightmare too but you won’t have that problem at least.

It has completely put me off folding bikes. Are they all that bad, is just Dahons which are terrible or did we just have a duff one? Anyway, I would steer clear of the Dahon one.

And then I remembered my visit to Fenestrelle, absolutely mind blowing.  Was there after it had closed for the day, just went for a walk. Looked like a posh house at the bottom, then a bit above that, and then some above that, and some more walls and drawbridges and more castle, I kept walking and walking up the hill and there were more and more levels of fortifications to retreat into. I did get in, actually quite easy when the drawbridges are down and there’s no one shooting at you.

I think using the weather to create a waterspout powerful enough to snap the mast on a ship that size, capsize her and cause her to sink might be beyond even the Mango Messiah’s fevered imagination – it’s certainly beyond the ability of any government.

The US government has spent $750m on a ‘weather monitoring’ system, HAARP, which is rather a lot for a weather station. It’s officially been handed over to a university in Alaska now but the defence department were very interested in it originally, who knows if they still have any involvement.

Have a Google of some of the conspiracy theories around that. I’m not saying they are all true, or indeed that any of them are, but they’re a fun read if you like that sort of stuff, and it does make you think.

The pads look fine I think – so is it a case of getting a brake winder from euro car parts and winding it back in. Then out again to free it up?

I did mine with the peg-spanner thing you use for changing discs on an angle grinder, worked perfectly.

Mine’s a bit older than yours, 2013 Transit, I don’t know how similar the brakes are but on mine the handbrake cable goes into some sort of arm on it, looks a bit like a cable disc caliper on a bike, and there’s a spring to return it. One spring had gone on mine so the handbrake was a bit rubbish, and a pad was rubbing, a bit like yours, almost through to the backing!

Compatible, new, caliper off eBay was about £40. I’d never changed one on a motor vehicle before but it was surprisingly straightforward, apart from some rusty bolts which were an effort, 8years difference might make yours a lot easier! Bleeding was a doddle too, if you can do bike ones you can do van ones. A chap on YouTube showed me how to do it, gave me a lot of confidence.

Stating the obvious maybe, but if you fit new pads do both sides.

Beaten to it by RNP. He’s better than me, I’m at best a 6, despite the recent snapped glow-plug incident, and even I managed fine.

Why does there have to be a gap?

Could you part-fill the gap, say a bit of 2×4 or something bolted to the house and then the shed bolted to that if it can’t go against the wall completely?

I had this last time i flew to Europe, Portugal in this case.
A little Fiat van (Belringo sized thing) was the cheapest option, cheaper than any estate car and loads of room. Check the vans too

Just to add another couple to the ‘surprisingly inappropriate cars with tow-bars’ my father used to have one on his Stag, towed a 3/4 ton boat with it. And I’ve seen a Corvette ZR1 with two bikes on a roof rack, which doesn’t meet the tow-bar criteria but probably does tick the bhp/ton box.

    Anyway,

As money appears to be no object, buy a Caddy or Connect for bike duties and a Porsche (other aspirational Marques are available) for car use.

That. Get an old Caddy/Berlingo/whatever and a Caterham/Elise/Cerbera depending on level of comfort required

Could you use the drill/grinder method to make some which are ok as a short term bodge, just good enough to hold the lathe together whilst you use it to make some proper decent ones?

Can you lose the spacer thing in the middle of the BB to give more room for the bend?

I’ve used BBs without and it doesn’t seem to affect the life of it at all

It takes time to move though so surely if it’s coming in at one end and going out at the other it will be very slightly higher at the ‘in’ end than the ‘out’ end? Unless these two flows are exactly equal and an equilibrium has already been reached? If there’s no out but ins all around, like in a lake, then would it be slightly higher at the sides and not quite as high in the middle? Just thinking to myself, hence the question marks.

Also, on a sufficiently large body of water (actually on all, but i doubt it will be measurable on small ones) tides will make it higher at one end than the other.

And, again more noticeable on big ones, the curvature of the earth will mean it’s not flat anyway.

I wait to be corrected by people who actually know about this stuff

[Edit] the other Andy thinks I’m right about at least one of these things, I’ll take that

Well, there is/was discussion recently that those close to the wind turbines or the sodding great powerlines hoofing it down to you flatlanders might get a discount on our leccy. Believe it when I see it.

My village has a wind farm just up the road. The generating company give a reasonable amount to our parish council to spend on various community things. Does that count?

Yes, this is a Scottish one and I’m more than happy for the electricity to go to wherever it’s needed, we have plenty of wind, if that can help other parts of the UK burn less gas then we all benefit surely?

I used to live in Lincolnshire and saw it coming over all the time, even better when accompanied by the Spitfires and Hurricanes, love the noise. Must have been seriously impressive when the thousand bomber raids were setting off (and utterly terrifying at the other end when they arrived!)

Was down for a week last month and only got the Dakota but that’s still quite cool. Also a lot of Typhoon activity.

It’s not great for mountain biking but does have some plus points living there.
