If there m970 no, you unscrew the bolt on the non driveside with the extractor tool attached. It will be very tight.

    edit: too slow

Second that, though I'd dispute 60-70% of Gasgale Gill being rideable! More like 20%, theres a great bit of singletrack in the middle, but it's a bitch of a climb!

That would depend on your climbing ability though surely? For us it's 60-70%. Up to the rock step is mostly doable in the dry with some on off obsticles and short carries. The flatter middle section which is about 1.5km is all rideable(the majority of the climb) then you have to carry the last 200m onto coledale. From Coledale hause to whiteless is all rideable 😉

Totally cheeky but brill : From loweswater take the route up through lanthwaite woods to lanthwaite green. Then go up gasgale gill path to coledale hause(60-70%)rideable(its has one difficult section, you've got to scramble up a couple of rock steps). From Coledale head south climbing still to the col between Grasmoor and Wandope then across to Whiteless Pike. Then down whiteless breast.*This is all rideable but very technical and steep and should really only be attempted if your confident in your abilities*. Its a absolute scream one of the best in the lakes IMO. Then head down the back of rannerdale knotts and out onto the road then back through lanthwaite woods and home. Top ride.

Karnali means 'Scarth Gap' pass not 'stakes' if going from ennerdale to buttermere, quite technical 😉

As above go with the flow, eventually they'll settle down…maybe!?! For about a week, perhaps! If your lucky!!
We are going into the dreaded cold season, so that'll make them grumpy, coughing all night and errr then they'll start teething, that angers the little darlings……. oh and when you get them in beds they'll come wake you up at all hours, Bogeyman on the loose again! Oh what fun 🙂

Soooooooo don't expect much proper sleep till about 2015!!!

G30's are good for all round use. Brill in dappled light you get in forests, seem to cope with the light transition better than any other lens I've used.

    I found them Excellent 😀

Recently ordered some 2009 forks which were on offer. Unfortunately they'd sold the last set when my order arrived. They promptly rang to say there was a problem and offered me some 2010 versions at a absolutely fantastic price. Not many online retailers would do this if any. Will definately use them again, great guys 😉

I was up last night and IMO theres actually a lots of grip when its wet and it was proper wet last night. Its when its in the transitional/drying out condition that sections become very slippy which is most of the time at the mo.

I think its because its slate base becomes slippy as silt is deposited over the surface by trail traffic. When its raining this is cleared giving you much better grip on the slate.

The Lakeland Loop book By Tim Woodcock is worth a look for the classic route round the lakes. Two day ride really, but two really big days so could easily be spread out a bit more for a more relaxed approach 😉

    Just found this

Sprinkling tarn to styhead then Stockley Bridge to seathwaite pretty tough but all rideable. Rossetts gills wayyyyy to mental to realistically be a bike route for me. Dollywagon pitched section definitely up there in the lakes the big drainage trough(you'll know which one if you've come down it 😯 ) always traumatises me!! Whiteless pike front to buttermere all rideable and has a couple of seriously techy sections. All lakes though plenty similar in scotland and wales I should imagine.

Time that well though – the climb up Grisedale is a popular footpath…and rather than taking the ridge that the wall follows, take the next ridge to the left (Hobcarton). One of the best descents around

Agree with you parkedtiger, far better descent 😉

Schwable Fat Alberts are fantastic and the lakes rocky stuff but ain't that light but roll really well. I'm prepared to put up with the extra weight for the excellent durablity trade-off. Never felt like they were slowing me down. Maxxis highrollers lust are rated on the rocky stuff and are a bit lighter.

Terrible tyres IMO way too fragile for anything remotely mountain like.
Tried some 2.4 ust's last year, they were fit for the bin in 4-5 rides(lakes). The casing is way way too thin and the grip is average. Never buy contis again, once bitten and all that!!

From a performance function point of view the xtr can't be beaten. With regards the chainrings, yes there stupid money but if you look after them you'll get 2 years useage easily. I was tipped off shimano prices were going to go through the roof, so bought a complete crankset for £200 last year(cheaper than buying the rings). Only just put it on after 2.5 years use out of the the first one. You can get aftermarket rings that will fit though 😉

Most roadies point out road obstacles, potholes, drain covers etc. As its difficult for the rider behind to spot them.

Garburn pass is superb – pref to go up from limefitt park as more 'rideable' up that way

strongly disagree! Go east young man!

Yes east is best 😛 The Climb is all rideable and the downhill more challenging/technical into Kentmere.

Did that route last weekend from keswick. Went along the first half of the Borrowdale Bash dropped into Rosthwaite, then up the Langstrath valley, up over Stake pass(tough) onto Rosset Pike and across to Angle tarn, up to sprinkling tarn, then down to Styhead and further down to Seathwaite. Lots of 'hike a bike'.Flipping Mental descending though!! Then used the cheeky footpath along the river to Grange. Great day in the fells and back in one piece…Bonus!! About 5hrs ride in total.
IMO Rosset Gyhll is a waste of time really on a bike, unless your Steve Peat You'll be on/off the bike quite a lot! 😕

Using some of the stuff mentioned, on Sunday we went from keswick along the first half of the Borrowdale Bash then up the Langstrath valley, up over Stake pass(tough) onto Rosset Pike and across to Angle tarn, up to sprinkling tarn, then down to Styhead and further down to Seathwaite. Bit harsh really, lots of 'hike a bike'.Flipping Mental descending though!! Then used the cheeky footpath along the river to Grange was we didn't fancy the rest of the BB(wimps). Great day in the fells and back in one piece…Bonus!! About 5hrs in total.

As an alternative which has a little less carring we've gone. From Bowness knott in Ennerdale down to Black sail , over the pass to Wasdale then up to Styhead, drop into seathwaite(the section which drops down the stockley bridge is fantastic), up Honister pass, in at the slatemine up the access track onto the back of fleetwith(see if you can bag it 8) ) then across Moses trod to the valley head below Gable then drop back into Ennerdale and home. Great day 🙂

All the Stuff south and west'ish of Ambleside, Langdale, Hodge close way..etc is good when its raining. Rocky mainly so not much mud and quite sheltered. The Borrowdale Bash is also ok in the wet.

If you can get them with a good deal as the rrp is just silly the UST Schwable Fat Alberts are excellent here in the lakes. They’re great on rocks wet or dry and roll well in trail centres etc. Michelin Mountain Xtrem also very good in the lakes, just a little heavier.

Yes drop off the summit of Skiddaw on the obvious track/path to Carlside then follow the allerdale ramble along longside edge(little climb) then down Ullock. Theres one section off Ullock that goes ‘scramble steep’ but can be done if you go left round a side path. Once the main part of the Ullock descent is over you come to a grassy col, turn left and back on yourself down towards Ravenstone Hotel. Nice descent through the woods.

The path off Carlside to Millbeck is also very good. Its pretty constantly steep. Steps/drainage channals at the top to jump, just the right gap between them to allow you to control your speed. You then come to some exposed white rock which is do-able but very very technical and requires some good line choice. Then very steep again to the bottom.

    Have fun 😀

    Bungalistic

Make sure lower your post a little, the section off Skiddaw goes very steep and loose for about 20metres. Theres lots of sharp rocks pointing up at you, but is definately rideable if a little on the edge. Then the rest of Ullock is a scream, best avoided at the busier times as the walkers will ruin the flow and your lines.

Skiddaw then Ullock Pike does it for me as does Whiteless pike to the back of Rannadale knotts and off the top of Robinson to the foot of Buttermere(super fast). All cheeky mind. Legal ones Styhead to Seathwaite and Blacksail to wasdale. List is endless…

My hopes did this, spoke to hope about it. They slowly wear at the rivots. Basically its a judgement call as to when you think they need to be replaced, mine had 2.5 years hard use. So not to bothered I had to replace it. To be fare to Hope had they been newer they would have replaced it.

Tried to run ust MK’s last year in the lakes, they lasted about 6 rides and had to be binned. The carcas just ain’t up to riding rocks. I’m using ust Schwalbe Fat Alberts now, much much better tyre. Just a bit heavier but you don’t notice it as the roll so well.
