Paste'd the properties from your post into the address bar which revealed the set, looks like a top day out that. We did High stile and Red Pike a couple of years back, wasn't much fun as the weather turned grim.
Changed his name also in my post 🙂 just in incase it was too much information.

Can't help but think Whinlatters issues are more to do with the way it has been built and the natural materials used. It’s basically a silt clay slate mixture which is far less stable than the likes of the Staines. It naturally holds water and won't drain easily and therefore is very prone to frost and rain damage. This softens up the surface and the weight of traffic then cuts it up.

What SB says and if you look carefully on the track Simon says "L which swings round the fell above Bassenthwaite" theres some really good DH stuff in the forest there. Watch out though cos its steep and its got some big'ish drops in it!! 😉

Absolutely fine running really quick with loads of grip just the the odd bit of ice about. The ice won't melt before the weekend, but its nowt to worry about 😉 We used it to get up Grisedale pike on wednesday night, thats also in fantastic condition very hard and grippy especially on the bit which drops off Hobcarton end.

Recently ordered some 2009 forks which were on offer. Unfortunately they'd sold the last set when my order arrived. They promptly rang to say there was a problem and offered me some 2010 versions at a absolutely fantastic price.

Hmm – the exact same thing happened to me. The prices were still good for the 2010 forks but I felt like it was possibly a 'bait and switch' move going on.

Thought it might be this at first but when I heard the price, I nearly ripped his hand off. We're talking £300 less than the current rrp. Great guy also, he rang me soon as they realised they couldn't supply the 2009 ones. Very Happy 😀

Parkedtiger, did you get down there the other week? We went up it today and it is quite extensively damaged in places, the path is missing a lot below the flatter middle section and there is section missing towards the top. Also just for reference we came over High Moss and down Bleak Knott theres a large section of that singletrack towards the top missing, got a bit of a shock cos its on a fast section and you don't see it till your right on it. Theres a good 4+5m missing and its about 2m deep.

Sanny to do Rodinson we basically follow the first 2/3's of the Newlands round. Which is little town, onto Maiden moor, High spy, then drop into Dalehead tarn(another great down), carry onto Dalehead(tough) then across littledale Edge to Robinson. Then from buttermere up Sail beck and down Rigg Screes. That takes us 4hrs roughly, if you try and add into that it'll get big. One option would be to go up gasgale then carry up onto grisedale and down Hobcarton, but thats a fair old carry at the end of a tough day .OR, if you went coledale > Whiteless way you'd be heading in the wrong direction but you could join Sail beck from Whiteless breast. I recon either detour would add at least 2.5 hrs to the ride.

Best way off Grisedale pike IMO is the path to Hobcarton end, its got some great steep singletrack on it. Sleet How way you can't ride the top section its borderline scramble at the top, the rest is good and rideable, but busy. Not that keen on the wall path into whinlatter bit boring its just straight and steep and can be boggy. Dropping off to Coledale is OK but nowt special really. There's a easy'ish way up of the top of the south loop of the Altura if your going up. 😉
I agree on Whiteless that's a cracking descent as is Robinson to Buttermere village and Ullock Pike. My current fave is from Sprinkling tarn to Styhead then down Stockley bridge, its just epic and constantly technical.

Would have thought you'll be fine higher up as Boxelder says most of the damage is at the bottom. Even that is passable, we've crossed by the damaged bridge a couple of times since the floods and if you look there is a obvious route across stopping you getting wet. 😉 Will be a different matter when its in spate though!

P.S if your up coledale for the sake of a bit more climbing Wandope then the ridge to Whiteless pike and down the front to Whiteless Breast is far better than Gasgale! All rideable too 😉

Second for Fat Alberts, excellent in the lakes. Great on rocks and roll well. Just a bit pricey but they do last well.

Doesn't sound right that Andy, if the keys were in the ignition the doors shouldn't lock, might have a fault they often do. First thing I do when I get back from a ride, when I've opened the passat is put the keys in the ignition and give then half a turn, it won't lock after that. 😉 You used to be able to get this function reprogrammed so it didn't lock, but I don't think you can on the more modern Vags.

Yes, he was out but running late so he joined us at lanthwaite end. We did a loop round Scale woods then across to Highpark woods, back through Scale woods and back along the wall. Good ride out but really, really slippy in places!! In contrast we went round the Bash on sunday and it was in perfect condition with loads of grip. Think the thaw monday, tuesday iced all the old snow up.

Thought you'd be off the other half got sent back from whitehaven also. 😉

Ayup Andy, you off work again today. 😛 Was round your way last night, Hopebeck was interesting as new snow was hiding all the off camber ice, nice!!

Was there last wednesday night. Its doable but the snow is thick in places. Top half of the south was a waste of time though, carried up and down as the drifts are over a foot deep in places. That said we are due rain/snow friday and more rain saturday so that could well change conditions up there. The road up is pretty bad also, we parked half way up on the lorton side and rode up.

If you after a good deal look at wiggle there knocking £20 off if you spend £100 before midnight tonight, so it'll cost you £80 if you take there price over the £100 threshold with a cheap bottle of something. 😉

My strikes were fine in -10c in whinlatter last wednesday night. Toasty warm. Only issue is there not really waterproof, but even with wet hands they've never felt cold.

The Borrowdale bash is fine in full winter conditions, as is back of skiddaw and Caldbeck fells(did this sunday). Helvelyn is also fine, so long as you have good mountain sense, which i guess you do being a climber. When it freezes up it actually makes some of it easier, ie the wet sections over the Dodds are a easier climb when the ground is hard. High wind and cloud would be the only thing I'd avoid with helvelyn or any of the high level routes this time of year with a bike but thats just common sense, better left to a still crisp winters day. And obviously steer well clear of the cornices!! 😆 Whinlatters a laugh also, not sure what the access up the pass is like at the mo, but it should be fine by the time you arrive. Basically anything you'd ride any other time of the year 😉
I run 2.3 tyres at quite low pressures when it frozen up which gives plenty grip. Off out tonight… can't wait!! 😀

Its fine mucho fun to be had!! The snow has frozen and has the crunchy grippy texture to it. Perfect winter mtbing conditions IMO. Although its due to get milder and rain boxing day onwards so that will change things somewhat.

DavidM Torver side should be ok, but the non main roads are pretty bad at the mo, temp not due to rise for a few days so I can't see them improving for a bit.
looks like this the other side in seathwaite!!

    Woohoo!! 😀

Setters(setmurthy) near cockermouth would tick your boxes I would have thought

Behind castle crag on the Bash would be good, easy access and lots to jump off. Some guys with the DH gear on, were doing just that this Sunday gone.
If you want more techy, you could park at Seathwaite(borrowdale one) ride the couple of km up to stockley bridge. Then carry up the BW, there's some very nice techy stuff up there to play on when you head back down.

If there L&M's and over a year, madison wouldn't repair mine and offered 10% off a new seca head unit. Which is a bit crap as you can actually buy the complete seca light with charger and battery for almost the same price.

All the stuff about customer service above is bull. Freeborn have given me the best customer service i have ever have from a mtb product. Break a part you have a replacement in 3 days no questions asked

I was on about the manufacturers reputation so not bull.

Tiz fella, from what I've experienced Ellsworth stand by there products if theres a genuine claim. In the UK freeborn(Ellsworth distributer) are exceptional at dealing with stuff quickly. I've had 2 rockers replaced because of the issues they suffered, one replacement being 6 months outside the 2 year warranty. They replaced it no questions asked. I don't see what else they need to or can do. Most of the stuff on the mtbr forum stems from the whole ICT patent issue. Which turned most Turner folks against Ellsworth. Time to move on…its about how they ride anyway… isn't it?

Going by your weight I'd also side with the turner or perhaps a Moment. I have the Epiphany and whilst I think its the dogs B's for the stuff i ride in the lakes I only weigh 70kg.

    From their webby

Why doesn’t my wireless computer or HRM work when my ARC HID light is on?
The ARC HID light produces a weak EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) that interferes with most wireless transmitters on cycle computers and heart rate monitors. You will need to either move the computer away from the light, approximately 12”, use a hard wired computer, or ride without your training device and just enjoy the night!

Borrowdale certainly has has some big rain in recent years. Remember end of last October, that rain was biblical….OMM rescue fiasco. Never seen anything like that in the 36 years I've lived there! The valley turned into lake and flattened drystome walls all over the place!!

    Proper Rain!!

If its M760 you need the specific ring. If its M770 be careful if your mixing with shimano rings because shimano have offset the rings on the newest XT and XTR stuff, so standard rings may need spacing.

The Epi rocks, it climbs sooooo well on the techy stuff. My previous s-works epic wasn't anyway near as good on the ups. It’s a competent descender, there isn't much in the lakes I haven't had it down and it handles it all. I have had the issues with the rocker but freeborn have been brill 😉 and the new rocker is a totally different beast. Despite this there isn't another bike out there I’d rather have for the type of riding I do. Really is a fantastic bike.
