So how’d you get on Tinners?

Cycle past the M32 and I understand there was a car / motorbike collision and it was solid 😉

Been thinking about doing similar ‘down here’ (Bristol) my old man is ex-job and has similar links into local CID etc. Like the Met in London they’d no doubt welcome the assistance.

You willing to divulge what you charge r_s?

    1. Institute of Advanced Motorists – Local group Vice-Chairman and volunteer instructor – on average about 2 hours every other Sat morning and one or two evenings a month. Not strictly all volunteering as you have to be a member but I also get paid for certain training I provide.

Why? Doing my bit to help improve driving standards and make the roads safer.

    2. School Governor. Also got more involved with school build. About a morning a month.

    3. Run the local Residents Association (I’ve been ‘Acting Chairman’ for the last 5 years). Organise Community Events (we’ve an Owl Prowl next Tues!) put out the occasional newsletter and organise infrequent meetings. Maximum 7 days over the year.

    4. Help marshall and provide ‘First Aid’ cover at bike events.

    5. Help run a monthly community ‘Litter Pick’ group

    6. Do the occasional ‘Community Speed Watch’ with the local police / councillors.

    7. Dabble in politics – member of the local executive.

    8. The Mummers (secret sect – you’ll have to look it up 😉

And each Weds Night I usually lead a local group of lay-abouts on a bike ride 😀

Allied to those, not so much ‘volunteering’ but I try to get to support other groups like our local Cyclists Campaign Group, the Local History Society, Gardening Club etc etc. Often just by turning up and taking part in the debate or helping make the tea etc. 😆

Have done lots similar over the years:
    – Trustee for an Environmental Charity (which set up the first ‘Farmers Market’).
    – Helped teach young offenders to read and write.
    – Ran a ‘Bike Maintenance and Riding Skills’ course at the local yoof club.

Why? Something different from work, helps widen your interests. Using skills I’ve gained at work to help outside and to an extent vice versa. Most of all because it’s good to give as well as take and it’s important to me to be part of the local community.

Yes, like work there’s the occasional numpty but on the whole people understand your a volunteer and there’s less of the pressure and hassle that accompany ‘real’ work.

Thanks to all those above for everything you do!

Go for it C_G and let us know how you get on.

Alongside an Enduro as a helment light and on the commuter as an alternative to the Enduro.

You’ll have your own opinion about build quality, guarantee, nice package etc. vs cost. I looked at the ‘cheap’ DX torches and plumped for the new Joystick because it uses the same bar mount /charger etc and has the same UK back-up and guarantee. Ok you pay a premium for that..

    Where bouts are you?

I’ve fitted two. Bought all the bits from these guys, they even cut the liner to length and only charged me for what I needed:

As pointed out already you’ll need building regs. And dependant upon where you live, to comply with smokeless laws

No, ‘fraid not. You clearly have never been a pedestrian. Pedestrians walk to and from places (other than cars).

Chasing, pursuing and waltzing don’t count :-0

Crap rant. You want to get out of your tin box and experience life as a pedestrian!

What makes you think he hasn’t?

Clue: So my morning drive to work,

And no, Mr Nutt, walking from the house to the car, from the car to the office doesn’t make you a pedestrian 🙂

One of my local roads this morning, supposed to be a 30 and ‘safe route to school’ but a$$hole drivers rushing to get to the back of the next queue seem to think it’s ok to bowl along at 40 on it.

Before they put the crossing in you could stand there for 10 minutes waiting for a safe gap. And by safe I mean one I can walk across with my kids, not be forced to make a mad dash for it.

After years of asking they put a crossing in. But its set up so as to ‘keep the traffic flowing’ and takes several minutes to activate at peak times.

So there I am, steady stream of traffic no sign of any gap. I push the button and stand and wait.. wait a bit more.. and more.. There’s a gap. I start to cross. Just about to reach the kerb the otherside and the lights change.

Bloke coming down the hill is forced to stop for the red and blows her horn at me whilst shaking his fist! **** car drivers 🙂

    Cheers Chas.

Double shame as it’s the closest to my house and easy to ride to.

Not such a shame as my nick-name for it is Conham Dog Sh!t Dump and I always seem to get at least one puncture there
    😆

Ok GPS and grid refs have their benefits but there’s nowt wrong with pinpointing your location using existing landmarks, place names, road names / numbers etc.

Before you know it they’ll be putting signs up every hundred metres apart on roads so that numpties who crash will be able to pinpoint their exact location in the event of an accident

    Oh, apparently they already are:

Whole ground floor here including wet room.

As already said you need to use it in a different way to the way you would radiators.

Leave it to warm up gently over 24 hours.

Sounds like some of those who’ve experienced it in holiday lets might be wopping it up to try and heat a room from cold – doesn’t work like that.

I wondered how they were spending the Cycling City grant

    Rolly-eye’s means you don’t think it’s a good idea presumably 😉

Ok so I initially had visions of some not-so bright spark getting hold of a set and immediately flogging it on ebay but they seem to be trying to identify the right individuals and groups.

In contrast to some of the schemes being done under the Cycling City banner this seems quite a good idea.

I’m in Bath and we used to do a Bike Maintenance Course at my local youth club, I’d love to have been given this kit..

4 or 5 years ago we were getting <15 riders turning up at Western League races. Now we’re getting >50.

A few years before that you’d be lucky to get 5 of us 😉

Enduro Maxx on the bars here and recently swapped to a Joystick Mk 5 for the helmet.

Advantages of cable free – no top tube ‘rubbing’, able to remove them in less than 1 second and pocket it off the commuter when I park it up, 5 brackets on 3 bikes (2 mtb, 1 crosser, 1 commuter and wifey’s commuter).
    (Same bracket for both lights).

Our group has been running Exposure from the start, about 30 lights in the group I guess now. Yes we’ve had PCB problems (2), ‘old’ style bracket button problems (it use to pull off, they’ve modded the design) an LED failure and a battery failure but all as said all have been dealt with super quick with fantastic service.

One of our group dropped his from a height and broke it. Repaired and returned promptly at minimal cost.

Have not trawled through all of the previous posts but another vote for the LBS here.

We’re lucky enough to have some fantastic one’s here in Bath.

The best offer so much more than bikes and bits and that is the reason I support all of them: advice, support, a place to chat, tips on local clubs and other riding groups (many from the shop), events (races and family etc), they support local racers, teams even, keep our cycling library, have nice coffee.. 😀

Depends which force and whether or not on blues and twos.

Assuming they have the right class license most forces will ‘permit to drive’ anyone who has passed the standard test.

Only response driving (on B&Ts) requires they undertake further training (hence why most forces refer to as the ‘standard’ course).

I’m guessing you had an issue with the standard of driving? I’d call the local nick and ask to speak to the Duty Inspector. I’m sure that will have the desired effect, if not consider a formal complaint to Supt.

Mail me if you don’t want to divulge details..

Andy – looks interesting. Is it light enough?

Yep, light as in weighs very little – certainly less than a joystick 🙂

.. easily bright enough as in visible from 1 mile away (flashing or highest steady setting) nice narrow beam that’s good for pointing at people without blinding them.
