Do you need two tone paint though, what colour is the frame?

If the bike was cherished and in great condition; then I’d bite the bullet myself.

It is a lot of cash for a rigid fork, but Sids and Rebas aren’t far off. The fact that Steve would have welded the frame would also be too strong a connection for me to resist :D

So that’s going to be around £460, plus 20% vat and the handling charge; so approximately £600 (ish) all in.

I suppose it depends on the condition of the Phoenix and how much you love it

Nice – I’m told those Jones bikes are very capable and a joy to ride.

Well I’m definitely a ‘Jones’ convert, my other bikes struggle to get a look in.

Ta, lovely bike you have there. In fact you have two lovely bikes with the green spaceframe in the shed as well!

Yeah, my green steely spaceframe is great; I’ve got that set up as a singlespeed with a knard 29×3 on the front.

Here is a better picture of the headtube.
How do you pre-load the headset?

You just tighten up the lower bolts and then then adjust the headset as normal.

The lower crown race is replaced with a top bearing cover.

Been waiting for this as I have ti Jones envy; looks lovely. How about a pic with the fat front on? And have you ridden it yet? If so how does it compare with the steel spaceframe you have? In a bit of a dither over whether to get a Ti truss for my diamond or just go for the full steel spaceframe.

Just put the fat front on; a Rolling Darryl with a Husker Du 26 x 4.

nice work! how do you fit the steerer through the headtube with the bit that clamps on top? I can’t quite work it out from the pictures?

edit ah the steerer is separate and it clamps on both ends.

Here is a better picture of the headtube.

Very nice indeed.

Do you always run your bars level?
I’m used to them being pointed more downwards towards the rear axle.

No, that picture was taken before I had properly set everything up. I run my loop bars angled down slightly so they run in line with the stem.

Nice, what’s it weighing in at ?

I haven’t got a clue to be honest and I don’t even own a set of scales. It has built up a lot lighter than I thought it would and it definitely feels and rides lighter than my steel spaceframe.

I had a purple top cap and seat QR on mine for a bit, same reasons. looks great against the ti. Hubs is commitment.. ) Wheels held on by a Shimano XT F and ti bolts rear, solid fixing over colours here but dunno if it really makes the difference, fork is solid anyway.

I did buy a purple Chromag seat collar as well, but decided it was going to be an over kill and the colour was ever so slightly different to the Paul Comp hubs anyway. I’ll be getting plain black skewers on it, which I think will be a definite improvement.

I can only speak very highly of Hope hubs and Hope in general; mine have been faultless. They’re also great people do deal with if you need any help and support with warranty and spares.

Just for reference this is the Hope hub I was talking about.

I didn’t know the came in colors other than black.

In which case I retract my downside point!

Mine was silver, but I’ve just had a look at the Hope website and they’re listing all their usual colours.

They might even do purple 8) lol

not usually jealous of bikes on here, but that jones is magnificent! will get one eventually!

Thanks, I’m really over the moon with how it turned out.

The Jones is lovely! With I had the beans to make mine xx1.

The XX1 on my other bike has been great and I love having a gripshift again. I went with a trigger shifter on the Jones though after getting advice from Jeff.

The Race Face chainset I have previously used was this one.

The Race Face chainset was also faultless, however you may need to budget for a new bottom bracket as the Race Face one is pretty poor quality.

I took it out on the road for a break in ride, so can’t give a worth while comparison against the steel spaceframe as yet. It is definitely feels and rides a lot lighter though.

I’ll get a picture of the fat front in the next couple of days.

Are the forks like Girvin Vectors but without the pivots? And whereabouts does the bike get ridden, as I wonder what terrain this was built for?
Yours Doubting Thomas

The forks haven’t got any elastomers and they don’t offer any suspension travel, but they do hold the front wheel on and let you steer; so I suppose they are slightly like Girvin Vectors.

The bike will get ridden on road and off road, both up and down hills and used for short and long rides. I don’t think there are any restrictions on it 8)

Top marks for the purple bits, I like that. Lovely.

I’m a big fan of the purple, but I’ve got fond memories of purple anodising from years ago. I just need to get rid of the skewers as they don’t match and are slightly too much. Paul Comp will be releasing some skewers in April, so I’ll probably go for a set of them in black.

I think a Type 2 is around $400 to $500 dollars so around £240 to £300. You’d need to add 20% and a bit of a handling charge on top of that.

I’m not 100% on that though.

It’s obviously not going to be as cheap as an ‘off the peg’ fork, but a WTB Pheonix is such a special bike that Steve would have probably welded up.

Edit –

woodsman – Member
I think you may be in for a shock then (no pun intended) a Potts fork is more like 600-800 dollars from memory…..

I might be miles away on my pricing then.

You could always send him an e-mail to SteveATstevepottsbicyclesDOTcom and see what he says. He’s a really great chap and very helpful.

I’ve had good experiences with Hope Trials hubs and Paul Comp Word hubs and also White Ind Eno cranks, Race Face cranks and Middleburn cranks.

I had a Hope Trials hub that went for 2 years of constant daily use with no issues at all.

Wasn’t aware of the Type 2 but that does seem like it would have to be the right one.

I pretty sure that Steve will have welded the frame, so it seems right to have a Type 2.

Depends on budget and how long you can wait though.

According to Sheldon Brown……

Factory Lube
New chains come pre-lubricated with a grease-type lubricant which has been installed at the factory. This is an excellent lubricant, and has been made to permeate all of the internal interstices in the chain.
This factory lube is superior to any lube that you can apply after the fact.

Some people make the bad mistake of deliberately removing this superior lubricant. Don’t do this!

The factory lubricant all by itself is usually good for several hundred miles of service if the bike is not ridden in wet or dusty conditions. It is best not to apply any sort of lube to a new chain until it is clearly needed, because any wet lube you can apply will dilute the factory lube.

The Velocity P35’s (now called Blunt 35) on my Jones have been great and I’ve also got a pair of Arch EX’s on another bike which have also been faultless.

I must admit to being a fan of the wider rims now after running the P35’s. I have got a pair of Duallys on the way which I’ve also got high hopes for.

(those Eriksens are pretty, @amplebrew do you notice any comfort benefit?)

They’re definitely more comfortable than my Thomson posts, although I purely run them because I’m a tart to be honest :D

There is less ‘buzz’ when in the saddle, and the benefit is more noticeable over longer distances.

Eriksen posts are really great quality. They’re $220 dollars which I think should be around £130 (ish) I also didn’t get stung for any import duty on the couple I’ve previously ordered.

I’m feeling very under shod with only:

2 x Nike trainers
1 x Black work boots
3 x Shimano cycling shoes
1 x Motorbike boots

I never realised that people owned so many shoes 8O

I use Town & Country in my van and they’ve been great.

I’ve not actually spilt any liquids on them, but any rain that blows onto the covers beads up rather than soaks in.

I use a Paul Comp insulated bottle which comes with both a leak proof loop lid and a ‘Café’ lid.

They’re made by Klean Kanteen who claim it can keep a hot liquid hot for up to 6 hours.

A pair of stainless King Cages would look a treat on that.

I’ve got sole Elite Inox Ciussi cages on order

Nice 8)

The black, white and red detailing on those cages will match the frame.

It’s such a lovely colour scheme, you must be really over the moon.

We have the same situation on the Isle Of Man where a UK lawyer can’t practice over here as the law is different.

A quick look on Google would suggest that they would have to sit the Final Examination 1 (FE1) which is the entrance examination for the Law Society of Ireland in order to practice.

We sometimes to get UK lawyers involved in high level court cases, however they are only allowed to advise the legal team.

It’s not particularly cool or sexy, especially in that metallic khaki colour; but it does everything I need.

There is certainly nothing I’d want to change, I even like the colour as it nearly match’s my Dekerf 8)
