Its like rambler herding – posts never go in the direction you want them to for to long.

Anyway back to the tangent –

Seriously, the land owner is liable even if the walker in question willfully ignores the notice? ie – reads undertands, perhaps even comments on and then passes.

C2C rail trail or cycle way most of the way through or two the city.

Footprint maps used to do a good map for Hadrians Wall – Tyne Valley giving a range of routes along the tyne.

The NE is fairly much riddled with old railway lines that have been turned into bike routes. South Tyneside council website has a cycling section showing all the routes in Sunderland – Newcastle area. Durham County Council prob has a web page for the rail trials in Durham.

Going further north there is the Sustrans Coast and Castles route to Edinburgh from Newcaslte.

    Fri – local peaks
    Sat – road peaks
Sun – yet another attempt to get to Calderdale with a bike. It just looked so so good last night but had to spend the whole evening looking at stuff and couldnt leave the car anywhere safe.

I'm just going on what the map says – hence a post elsewhere about the TPT from Selby to Hull. There are though green dots on that there tow path. I've gone for dodging round the back of Leeds by doing Skipton – Ilkley – Otley – Selby. Not looking forward to the climb up past the Cow and Calf.

C2C then back by the Rievers or the W2W (Walney to Wear).

I've been looking at parts of the Yorkshire cycleway to get from Coniston to Hull. Getting up country you could always go from Sheffield up the Trans Pennine Trail link to Leeds then through the town centre on the cycle route on the canal up to Skipton then circuit round the Dales and the North Pennines.

Walkers on the Marin a couple of years back – given they looked like they were just brew / view / loo people rather than rascally ramblers I suspect they were just following a path and one path is the same as the next and they were having a bit of an explore.

I'd be interested to see what the liablility was if a group of walkers or horse riders deliberately takes a mountain biking route as they fundamentally believe paths (even bike routes) are for all.

Ok – this bit doesnt apply to this thread but the bit in the guardian

Ill infomed inflamitory tosh in my opinion, the sort of nonsense that then starts to get quoted as gospel and just generally makes it harder to get any sensible workable ideas off the ground. Oh its in the Guardian it must be true.

Cut Gate – North America not really a wet weather option.

Teggs Nose / Macc Forest / Wildboarclough Circuit or Goyt Valley Circuit fairly good all weather options. http://www.bikemaps.co.uk has details.

Lake District to Interlaken at the end of next month. Riding the Oldman-Jungfrau to watch some mates run the Jungfrau Marathon, always entertaining as they are the only ones fancy dress (cavemen this year) which always gets a good response.

So its just a case of follow the route as on the gps map further back in the post? Now its just the choice of ski tow tlc or Gisburn. I think I know which one will win.

Bruce, drop Si at 18bikes a line about the ridethepeak trail repair dig days, if you want to get out and do a bit of fettling on bridleways we kind of have the a more 'official' structure to do it. Unfortunately tonights task has been cancelled due to bad weather otherwise we could have harnessed your enthusiasm straight away.

Well, yeah, man, you see, like, all the tanks we come up against are bigger and better than ours, so all we can hope to do is, like, scare 'em away, y'know. This gun is an ordinary 76mm but we add this piece of pipe onto it, and the Krauts think, like, maybe it's a 90mm. We got our own ammunition, it's filled with paint. When we fire it, it makes… pretty pictures. Scares the hell outta people! We have a loudspeaker here, and when we go into battle we play music, very loud. It kind of… calms us down. Oddball

[groans] Don't hit me with them negative waves so early in the morning. Think the bridge will be there and it will be there. It's a mother, beautiful bridge, and it's gonna be there. Ok? – Oddball
[Later: Oddball is looking through binoculars at the bridge] Still up! – Oddball
[planes fly and bomb the bridge] … No it ain't. See what sending out them negative waves did, Moriarty? – Oddball
That ain't my fault, Oddball, I've done nothing but have good thoughts about that damn bridge ever since we left! – Moriarty

Had been thinking of asking same question as original post.

For those who havent ridden Cut Gate pre-work the sections that changed were (South to North). From just before where you enter the river bed to the second set of pitching at the North end of Mickleden Edge. The wall at the south end of Mickleden Edge to the bridge at the reservoir. Coronation St on the otherside was part of work by Yorkshire Water. Dont know who did the stone slabs on the Derwent Valley side.

The contractor who did the work was Terra-Firma, same guys who did the bulk of Lee Quarry and just done new build pennine bridleway north of Gorple Road. Hadnt ridden any of it pre-work but quite like the hairpins / pitching / drainage bars near the North End. Although its prob needs 12months to settle.

    Can we not do

    formerly stolen

Somehow I dont think your Scotish Crofters who have bought back there estates can be seen as having stolen the land. Nor Tennant farmers who have bought their farms.

Trail poaching may not be a crime but it is a civil offence.

I had mentioned this book a few times on the old IMBA forum but its prob a good time to mention it again. It covers everything including tresspass.

Law of the Countryside published by the Countryside Managment Association.

It is worth noting that when your stopped and asked to leave this can be the landowner or their agent. With the Peak District this would be the ranger service – the national park owns a lot of land. Stanage, Roaches, Eastern Moors. Other a lot of the other areas are owned by Water companies – here I'd go for the rangers being the agent of the water company. Check the dual badging on the uniforms – fairholms / derwent valley or Macc Forest for example. National Trust have their own Wardens so its prob best to listen to them. Not sure if on private land where the landowner asks the national park to do something about it they could then be seen to be 'agents'.

One interesting little snippet in the book is that you dont have to give your name when you are stopped and asked to leave.

Just because it not a criminal offence doesnt mean its a cheeky trial charter. Its more a case of knowing what the situation is when you get caught and to burst the bullshit bubble where people try the big I am approach.

Someone put about building on SSSIs. If you dont have permission /consent they can do you for it. A large shooting estate in the North Pennines recently copped for some massive fines and had to re-instate several KM of illegal estate roads. Nearly everything I do is on SSSIs but I have a whole load of hoops to jump through before Natural England gives permission for the work. It'll be the same for TonyL at Lee Quarry, being a SSSI doesnt mean you cant you just have to prove you can without damaging it before permission is given.

Going back to the Anglian Water bylaws – doesnt it say excluding pedal cycle?

As I understand it if your on a public right of way – footpath it is as pointed out above a civil offence against the landowner. Its only riding on footways – the pavement – that is an offence under the road traffic act. Please note I'm not a legal expert / ranger so this is just my understanding.

I've fallen foul of the EA before – riding the footpath over the dam in Macc Forest. The balif was rude patronising and agressive. His Fffff-in big dog was just extremely aggresive in an almost rabid way. The bloke tried all manner of guff which may have worked if I wasnt a seasoned trail poacher at the time. Came very close to making a formal complaint against him.

So, another singletrack sub-group – my wife / girlfriend is does better than me at mountain bike races / events?

Happens to me all the time unless I compete with her, have only finished higher once in all the time we’ve been going out. Good thing is when we do compete together we do quite well.

Octavia Estate or A4 Avant. Got into the realms trans dimensional millages with the A4 before I killed it on a gate post. Did 219,000 and it would have been good for 250,000 or about another year as it was just getting a bit tired towards the end. A 80-120 thou millage one comes in around £6-8000. Only real pain with the A4’s is the belt changes, normally done around 80,000 miles, expensive (£400ish min) even when you use an independant. Only prob I had was front suspension arm wear – a prob on early models but now fixed. No other major mechanicals.

I’m sticking with bike park slot car singletrack as the best discription. Take it as fast and flighty as you want dont expect rocks put up with the ride out to the start or see it as a chance to chat to friends. Dont go if you have a very fixed view that all trail centres should be hard and rocky naturalising into the landscape you’ll just find it lacking. Its something a little different and there is nothing wrong with that but it is over graded.

I dont really do wood work – riding or building – talking to someone who does a couple of months back about this type of thing.

Their view was the broad area of northshore was probably due some fairly hefty review of construction standards. Changes mainly in terms standards and dimensions of timber used for construction.
Sounded like official sanctioned woodwork would all be machined and treated – no more natural and much more boardwalk and much much chunkier. Minimun dimensions set for different parts of the structure depending ond loadings and stresses. It also sounded like directives covering working from height etc could have an impact on gantry / tall structures.

I go for a figure 8 route down North America, over to the bottom section of cut gate. Into the wood and up coronation street. Coming round off the dam past North America and up Cut Gate proper.

Its quite funny because with the work hat on I dont see many mountain bikers out on the trail during the day but I do tend to see more than walkers and horse riders when I’m on a bridleway and sometimes when i’m not. When I’m riding I dont see many rangers etc as its normally evenings or quieter areas at weekends. And to be quite honest unless I’ve got some obvious work related gubins with me most bikers probably think I’m a walker.
