We’ve been there quite a few times and can echo all the good stuff written above. But don’t worry about the heat, you will become accustomed to it very quickly indeed. Locals ride big miles in that heat- so why not anyone else?

My biggest memory of the place was an exploratory ride that just got better and better, snaking down through the limestone chestnut forest along super sweet natural singletrack made by wild boars and deer. I popped out in a field of tobacco and walnut trees and rode back to the cottage. Passing through the village on the way back all I had was shouts of encouragement from the guys at the bar. Fantastic. A class place to live and work- no wonder there are so many Brits in Dordogneshire.

I’d noticed that about the links too. They appear to be well dodgy.

My Topeak Alien has served me and others very well for years and years. The ring spannesr might seem superfluous but I have used them loads more than I ever would have thought.

    z1ppy 4 is even, not odd ;)

Apparantly the Swedish biologist ‘Linneaus’ classified Bats and Humans into the same group on the grounds of them both having a ‘pendulous penis’.

In all seriousness. A friend now runs guided rides and skills courses from his home here in South Wales. Business is good. He needed to register with the Tourist Board, do his tax returns, get a decent first aid certificate, get ‘qualified’ with the Scottish Mountainbiking peeps. Mapwork and general navigation brushed up. And away we go…

He uses his own home as acommodation for clients and kips with his partner when his house is otherwise occupied.

North Wales: Pont Scethin- in any weather.

Mid Wales: Tywi & Teifi Headwaters loop, including the Tywi Track. In high water or in drought with a pint in Pontrhydfendigaid.

West Wales: Mynydd Preseli. Dry weather.

South Wales- A big Mynydd Ddu mountain loop involving Dan yr Ogof, near Abercraf

East Wales: Black Mountains loop, including Yr Das, either up or down.

Missed out Doethie Valley though, not sure why. It’s pretty good :)

All the above- but the nose of saddle/ chocolate starfish interface REALLY helps. As does having power just before the root and then immediately after it but not actually on it. Speed and momentum are your friends.

I’m arranging a MTB-Wales trip to Moel P very soon. Coal is already laid in and well hidden. Google ‘Tywi Track’ or ‘Tywi Spashes’ or ‘Strata Florida’

Excellent spot. Its a good ride from there to the other local bothies too for a tour if ever you feel like it. And the drop down from the top of the valley is awesome!

B’locks. Bullit is WAY overkill. Trust me, I’m local. A SL will be great, or a HT for that matter. Used both, had as much fun on the HT as I did on the SL. Now on a Helius CC and that is overkill for me- but I’m an XC type of guy really.

It depends upon a few things.

All children in secondary education in Wales have to be taught Welsh up until they leave school unless they are disapplied. There are two common reasons for disapplication, SEN and entry into the school at a late stage not having been taught Welsh before.

Generally we will not place children into Welsh classes if they join from a ‘non- welsh’ school prior to the end of Key Stage 3, i.e., end of Year 9.

Children with severe learning difficulties will be disapplied from Welsh from the outset, as will pupils joining us who speak little or no english.

Mal-ec, I’m in Ammanford, the far western end of the Brecon Beacons. Working close-ish to Carmarthen. We tend to ride in Western BBNP or Llandovery/ Tregaron/ Llampeter area. And ther is LOADS of classy riding to be done. The Doethie is a delight, as mentioned above- but there is so much more.

take a look at MTB-Wales too.

ironbrucove- think of what all that slate could be used for! And there is no shortage of rainwater to capture. biggest prob would be getting the film crew to the site.

How’s Sam, still smiling I hope. Thanks for the card btw.

And I wish I could get on with the conversions but wage cuts and lack of capital are stalling things at the moment. Not that this will ever be a candidate for the show. But what about Fferam Fachwen…

I’m like SFB on this. But always been very very flexible. I tend to sort of shamble and lope about rather than walk. It’s a bit scary to watch sometimes…

The first one seems to need a special circular cros-section Allen key to fit it as well. That will be even more expense.

In all seriousness- do you know anyone at the local tech. Ask them to recommend their best student. A mate did that and had his downstairs done for mucho cheapness.

By best student I mean best Plastering student. No good getting your average A level geologist or physicist I would have thought.

I teach physics and biology in a Llanelli secondary school. It has its ups and its downs. Falling rolls at the moment are pressurising staffing numbers but being reasonably specific and skilled in my other role in school (Upper School Pastoral Support Manager) all should be OK unless the powers that be change the pastoral support structure. And I really hope that they do because the job sure ain’t what it used to be!

I can wholeheartedly recommend a holiday cottage in Ffachwen. High above Llanberis, but not unknown for us to walk down to Pete’s for some Eats. It’s on a dead end singletrack road and uberquiet- to put it mildly. Cottage sleeps 4 or 5, the self contained converted barnette close by sleeps 2. Storage for bikes too if you decide to take one.

    Details here….
    http://www.shawsholidays.com/s/s01.html

Oooh I see that the little barn conversion isn’t listed. The cottage is still mega cheap though and blummin fantastic!

For Puffins get ye over to Skomer in the springtime. Google ‘Dale Princess’ or Skomer Island.

And I too like the quietness that is Brechfa. In fact nowadays it is positively teeming with people in comparison to how it once was, ‘back in the day’.
