I have an amp and a good set of 9x6s so it’s just the head unit. And yeah, mainly for 6music.

Budget – dunno, probably no more than £150 – £200 or so, although if that Sony is any good and it’s only £90 then that’ll do me. :o)

Aces. That’s what I was after.

    Thanks.

Get the roof or outside wall fixed – whichever is leaking.

Not entirely sure either are leaking. It’s the ground floor of an old terraced house, and the upstairs has had a brand new roof in the last 18 months. It’s also not wet enough inside for there to be a ‘leaky’ wall. It’s basically a cold exterior wall that doesn’t get any ventilation on the interior wall surface due to it being inside a built-in cupboard.

And for the THIRD time… anyone got any suggestions on rough costs? ;o)

Aye, I’m already bearing that in mind, but this has always been a bit of a problem spot.

Before the beginning of this year, the flat had been empty for the best part of 2 years (long story) and it was still occasionally a tad damp in that corner – which is actually inside a built-in cupboard – during long spells of wet weather. With it being inside a cupboard, I assume it isn’t ever going to get the ventilation it needs.

Anyone got any suggestions on rough costs?

I’ve been eyeing up the Canyons for a week or two now.

I reckon a £1700 budget would need some kind of ‘special clearance’ though.

Yeah, you’re right. The weight was making me think twice, too. :o)

…and then I notice something like this within the budget.

    http://www.bike-discount.de/en/buy/radon-swoop-190-7.0-20241/wg_id-2

But I wonder if that geometry would be too slack for a full sus do it all thrasher bike?

Yeah, some good ideas here, thanks.

I had also considered building something with a mix of new and s/h, and to be honest that’s probably the direction I’m most leaning in – partly because it will help me bump up my skills in terms of maintenance and stuff, and partly because I quite like doing all that kind of stuff anyway.

    So…

1×10 rather than 2×10 – I’ve been running 1×9 on my do-it-all hard tail (narrow/wide 32t chainring, no guide) for a while now, and have found it to be looser, freer, quieter, more reliable, etc, etc than it was with a front mech.

26 vs 27.5? Can’t decide on this, although I guess i’ll have a tough time finding a used 27.5 tweaked frame, right. Having said that, I’d already spotted those 26″ Superstar wheels. ;o) EDIT –> THEY’RE OUT OF STOCK

Not bothered if the bike comes out looking like a mess of random/used parts – I think I’d prefer that anyway.

Now, to start looking for a frame…

Yeah, two conflicting answers… which is the big dilemma.

I’m thinking budget only around the £1300 ish mark for this, as it is just a bit of an experiment rather than something I want to spend a ton of money on. However, that means there’s not much choice in new complete bikes. Best I’ve seen so far is the Canyon Nerve AL 6 for £1200 (plus delivery), but that only has 120mm of travel – yeah, I know that’s probably enough, but I want to play with more. :o)

I’ve been trying to price up used components, obviously starting with a used frame but it’s a bit of a minefield in terms of compatibility – and it would probably take me the full winter to build it anyway.

How about Three? You can use your phone across Europe at no extra charge – ie, minutes and data come out of your normal allowance.

Take only the stuff that’s *you* (bikes/surfboards/clothes/cds/whatever/etc) and walk away from the shared day to day stuff like sofas, beds, TVs, etc, etc.

Seeing them will just remind you of the relationship at a time when you really don’t need reminding of it.

It’s difficult to get a proper fresh start when you’re still surrounded by your old life.

I (and a ton of others) can highly recommend DigitalOcean for quick, cheap, fast and reliable VPS servers with a super simple control panel. I use them for hosting a bunch of client sites and also for some personal projects.

Brilliant support docs too, if you don’t have much experience with this kind of thing or you need some pointers/help when setting up or managing your server.

That’s a referral link too, btw. If you use it, we’ll both get free credit :o)

Customers are advised to be prepared for minor injuries particularly if wearing the footwear for long distances.

There could be stubbed toes or small cut so a small first aid kit is recommended as well as a tetanus jab every ten years.

    Aye, they sound great.

Depends which flags they were paddling between? Red/yellow flags for swimmers/paddlers (and bodyboards according to RLNI guidelines). Black and white checkered flags for surfboards, etc.

    Excellent stories.

Myself, my bro and a couple of mates went bobsleighing once. Only we swapped the sled for a 4 wheel Biffa bin, and the bobsleigh run for some steep cobbled streets in Durham city centre.

And we were very pissed. And more than a bit stoned.

The idea was to peg it down the hill pushing the bin, jump in once it had picked up speed, then yank the lid closed above us. Then, it was just a matter of fate where we ended up at the bottom, but it generally involved us all being violently flung out once we’d smashed into a kerb or wall.

After one particular go, we’d all been flung out as usual and were pissing ourselves laughing… only I noticed my bro was still lying on the deck completely motionless and didn’t look like he was breathing. We didn’t know if he’d hit his head or what, but we all started freaking out trying to figure out what to do. It was about 3am, no one else around, no mobiles to call for help. Frightening stuff.

The other massive problem was that earlier that afternoon, I’d been watching Neighbours – more specifically, the episode where Dr Karl Kennedy had performed a ballpoint pen tracheotomy on someone. And in my pissed/paranoid state I had genuinely convinced myself (and the others) that I was going to have to do that here.

    We. Were. Shitting. Ourselves.

Luckily he came round in the style of the Pulp Fiction adrenalin shot before I could jab something in his throat but a lot of stuff flashed before my eyes that night like.

    Sheesh.

Cheers big yim – appreciated. However, I’ve just had a price from a local mobile repairer based on a load of photographs I sent him – £180, which’ll do me.

He’s got a really busy FB page with tons of recent repair pictures and loads of solid feedback so I think I may be sorted.

Now… what to do with this body?

    Another shout for Aviva here.

I’ve just insured a van AND a car on their multicar policy for both me and my other half (who’s actually only been driving for a couple of years).

The whole thing was actually cheaper than the individual single vehicle quotes from gocompare/moneysupermarket/etc.

Really good self service website/mobile app too – which definitely helps to inspire confidence these days.

If you hit it yourself, I can almost certainly guarantee it will end up looking worse than it does now.

Yeah, that’s what I’m most worried about. I’ll try and take it somewhere this week for a quote.

It’s a Fiat Ducato that I saw on the forecourt of a little garage on the way back from the Lakes 3 weeks ago. Absolutely spotless condition and around half the price of similar vans on Ebay. Was a bit suspicious about that, but I had my bro with me who’s spent the last few years as a Fiat Commercial mechanic with a main dealer and he knows these vans inside out. Verdict was it’s a bargain so I bought it on the spot.

It’s also not white, or a VW.

Yeah, disposing the body. I’m still working on a plan for this. I’m sure you can guess who reversed it into a lamp post after wanting a ‘try’.

I tried my hardest not to get mad with her and ended up saying not much at all instead, which apparently is worse and means that I’m now the one who’s in the wrong.

I think I need to go and read that thread about women again.

I was offered a job in a Brussels ad agency in 2000 but turned it down mainly due to the fact that the stupidly high level of income tax would have meant I’d have less take home pay than what I was earning in my current job.

I regret that decision most days, largely because I instantly fell in love with the agency receptionist when I went for one of the interviews.

Anyhoo… I have no idea what that tax percentage is now, but it might be worth investigating.

I made eye contact, and blew him a kiss. *mmwah*

Haha. I did exactly that to a local driver in Spain a few years back. I was in a Spanish plated hire car, and not knowing the road system 100%, I harmlessly, albeit accidentally, waited a beat too long in the wrong part of a junction to make a turning. Cue the Spaniard pulling close enough to my car that the wing mirrors were touching, leaning his head almost right into my car and launching into an absolutely MENTAL SWEARY tirade.

I couldn’t understand a word he was saying so I just puckered up, blew him a kiss, and drove off. Fast.

Turns out that didn’t impress him too much either, as he then followed me at speed, inches from my car, for a good few miles. I don’t just mean behind me either… this was proper Knight Rider stuff – he was definitely trying to run me off the road at one point.

But the best part of it all was that I had my (now ex) wife and her parents in the car with me. Cowering. Hee.

Oh, the laughs we had recalling that story. Not.

@ambientcoast – if you don’t miss a mortgage payment it’s highly unlikely the bank will ever notice. They have more things to worry about

Trust me, the one time they ever did notice by chance, it would be my house that they noticed.

Just been through a similar thing.

Check with your mortgage company whether they’ll give you ‘Consent to Let’ before you get tenants in.

They may do it without question, they may charge a fee, they may say no, or they may have other conditions. We needed to up the equity in ours so that the rental income was a certain percentage of the monthly mortgage payment.

If you let your house on a normal mortgage you may be breaching the T&Cs of it. Loads of people do it without telling the mortgage company, but I wouldn’t want to risk it.

Is this why developers consider Apple to provide the better returns on their development time.

Not really. Development time on Android is compounded by the fact that software versions are massively fragmented across the ecosystem, and also that there are a huge number of screen sizes that need to be accounted for.

In comparison, there are just a handful of screen sizes between all iOS devices and the vast majority of the userbase tends to upgrade their software shortly after the release of a new version (if their devices are supported) which means most users are on the same version number.
