Thanks for the advice everyone, appreciate the tips etc. The most reoccurring theme does tend to be on it with taking photos when receiving the car. Likely to drop the car off at another destination so I guess this will be paramount.

I’ll check out the excess insurance options as this will put us at ease a bit.

What kind of price would you expect to pay for a second hand Tudor BB58? Preferably on something other than a steel bracelet. Getting married in September so we’re looking at gifts for eachother.

Alternatively, where would your money go for something of that value? BB58 is my benchmark as I keep coming back to it / comparing everything against it.

Pardon my ignorance, but is this just in towns and villages etc? Heading down on the weekend for the first time in about 15+ years, I would have been far too young to drive at that point.

I did have a quick google and it suggests areas where you’d get 200 or more people? So assumed towns etc, just wanting to clarify. If it’s mainly in built up areas, much like a lot of Scotland, I don’t see a problem with it and wouldn’t complain about it being imposed elsewhere.

@freester Excellent, thank you! I’d seen him mention it and I think even with the description you’d quoted but I couldn’t find it at the time. Will certainly give that a listen. I like how versatile he is. Thanks for that!

The decks in the car are similar to this video with Eats Everything and Fatboyslim. Eats Everything is one of my favourite DJs, has a great ability to play most things / genres

Someone may be able to make this link work

Currently on a set of XDJ700 MK2s with a DJM800 mixer. Started with a DDJ400 connected to a laptop but a mate had an RX2 and he upgraded to some CDJs so could never get on with using a laptop. Got a good deal on some RX(1)s but sold those for the 700s. Paired with a couple of KRK Rokit 6’s and it’s a great combination to annoy the neighbours.

    @Freester
    – If the 1000s are anything like the 700s, I don’t think you’ll be dissapointed, love mine. Would almost go to say they’re better than my mates CDJ Nexus 2s

Surprised there’s this many comments with no correction of ‘Northumbria’ to Northumberland

They’re designed for 100+ kg riders slamming down on them at a fair angle, so should be fine

Yep, that was / is my worry – designed to be slammed down on, not having weight hung off them. But seems like they are OK with it as long as fully extended, shouldn’t be done part extended.

Due to seat tube angles, and your riding position not being perfectly straight, there will always be an angled force applied when compressed(ing). As mentioned above, weight shouldn’t be an issue, take the Oneup ~200mm dropper for example, the angled force applied to that from a rider through every day use will be far greater than hanging a bike off it in a fixed position with the post at full extension,

I did one in Sheffield about this time last year and was great fun. Great atmosphere and just cool to see lots of people out and enjoying traffic free roads. there weren’t any road closures in place, just the sheer volume of people was enough. Not sure what the london one would be like but if it’s anything like the Sheffield one, definitely get yourself along!

Broke my old faithful Pedro’s levers today, what are your choice of levers?

Pretty positive you can claim warranty on them.

Thanks for all the replies and apologies for the late response,

I think the most reasonable thing is to get it fixed and hope nothing else goes wrong. Probably spread it out over 6 months and hopefully get a few more years out of it. More than a convenience than a neccesity but it definitely helps to have it, I’m not doing many miles but long term I should get more from a value point of view. It’s mainly frustrating how much of a money pit it’s turned into, but as mentioned above, that’s just how it is with cars.

I think my best bet is to at least consider what another garage, or two have to say. Would be a bit rash otherwise. If they won’t touch it, spreading the £1700 over 6 months seems tempting, think it was interest free…

I don’t desperately need the car but it is handy to have and would be a lot of money to lose out on if I didn’t get it fixed. Realistically, public transport would cost me £20 a week, ironically still more than fuel for a week.

Not sure if it’s a wet belt – will have a google.

Forgot to mention it’s an Ecoboost – garage have said they’re not the best engines.

Edit – have had a look, it’s a wet belt and recommendation is that they last 150k miles. I’m not doing mega miles at the moment, only about 60 – 80 a week, that’s been the case since I bought it apart from a few trips, one was about 1000 miles in May 2022 and about 600 in February 2023 otherwise i’ve done about 3-4000 in total.

    alpineharry

I’ll call another one tomorrow, there’s one I’ve used in the past that seems to be pretty good / reliable.

The belt has disintegrated from what the garage said which is why they’ve mentioned to replace it and the parts. But I’m not sure entirely what that entails. Although it still drove fine before I decided to do something about it – probably a few weeks and it only threw up the light on the dash when the engine was cold i.e in the morning but would be fine on startup in the afternoon.

The issue was something I decided to get sorted before it got worse rather than the car not working etc.

This is, apparently, progressive house – whatever classification is, this is the sort of thing I find ideal for background listening when I’m WFH. This and pretty much anything on the Anjunadeep label.

I’d suggest listening to Hot Since 82 if this is your kind of thing. Don’t know how to embed videos, sorry, but here’s a link.

Would also recommend the Pixel 6, have one myself (since they first came out) and can’t fault it. Camera is great, nice and sharp and the long exposure and night modes are a nice touch and very handy. No ‘pro’ mode though but depends how into changing all the settings you are.

I paid £600 for mine when they came out (Oct 21) so £300 is a bargain as it was a good price at £600, Pixel 7 is out now but side by side, there’s very little difference.

Big issue in S6 (Sheffield), burst water main caused shrapnel to puncture a gas line and now there’s water in the gas pipes, 1200 homes affected. Were told to wait in all day yesterday for someone to (not) turn up, likewise today but we just went out and still no one. Bit of a nightmare with no heating or hot water, not sure when it’ll be fixed. Saving on gas central heating although does mean we’re using electric heaters at 6x the cost and that’s only heating one room, rather than the whole house as the central heating would.

With more relation to the thread… we’re still on a fixed tariff until June 23 but worked out our bill will go up by over £1000 a year afterwards (currently £850 for two of us) in a victorian terrace with no insulation.

I recently bought some from ebay that a mechanic had recommended in the past. They’re getting fitted on Friday as part of an MOT. Similar to greybeard, if the sensors aren’t happy, it shows on the dashboard and an MOT failure which is annoying

Apologies for the late respone, and thanks for all the replies. Been feeling awful all weekend and didn’t do a lot yesterday.

    It’s. this card here – https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B09QQCX1V2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Bought the other day so shouldn’t be damaged, Still doesn’t appear to show up anywhere. The description / comments suggest it’s just a ‘plug and play’.

It’s a USB 2.0, i.e, not blue on the inside.

Think I’ll just send it back and try my luck with something else.

    Thanks

We’re having a smart meter installed next month, I assumed it would work for gas as well but maybe not?

Ours does, we’re on a fixed tariff from 2020 so making the most of it. Handy to get a rough idea but can then multiply 10 fold for when june comes round and we have to change tariff.

does anyone know of any good guides/websites/app for calculating property heat loss?
I’m going back to basics, I need to target my efforts where they count, I know our house isnt very efficient but they numbers I’m seeing at taking the pish

Probably some forn of way of doing it but generally there’s so many variables it’s hard to ‘generalise’ heat loss. As mentioned above, it depends on a lot of factors, external and internal temperature difference being one – a more basic thermo calculation. For a house, you’d tend to look at insulation, surface area and how the wall is made up etc, but that may be looking in to it too much. I did my university project on this kind of thing.

Not ridden it properly since 2015 but raced it (SDA) the previous 3 years. I didn’t have a lot of money at the time, was 18, so didn’t really have any spares with me and never struggled,. I’d built the wheels I raced on and had no issues, just superstar rims and hubs so nothing special. I’m not particularly easy on parts, but would say I know how to ride well…. Wouldn’t worry too much unless you’re a bit of a hack and can’t choose appropraite lines. Fastest time outside of racing (using gopro for time) was just under 6 mins, would love to go back up and ride it now as reckon I’ll be faster, even on an enduro bike.

As mentioned above, season tends to be end of september / sometime in October, I believe it’s still open, they’re pretty good at updating their socials about wind / closing Gondola etc. Weather can be very hit and miss, we went to Fort William (not to ride) last October and weather was a lot better than in May this year.

Generally just the one track for the most part, SDA avoids the road gap and may use the new wood section (wasn’t open when I raced last) but there are bits and pieces of line choice but mostly it’s the same track that you can ride year round.

Feel free to PM and I’ll try remember some more detailds!

Depending where you are, and maybe not as exciting, but northern Scotland is beautful and can get some amazing views of the lights over the North Sea / East coast. Alternatively, I’ve seen them from Trondheim in Norway, nice city and by the coast so a fairly clear view to be able to see them. Lots of great scenery round about too. I went Mid February in 2015 and seemed like a ratio of light / dark.

Where would people put their money for between £1000-£1500?

After something sporty/ dressy. Im leaning towards the Tudor 1926 with the white dial and blue numbers but thought I’d see if anyone had any alternatives

Might be worth trying polycarb, bit tougher than some. For SLS, you’ll probably have high startup costs (from experience of trying to get a quote and now working with SlS parts)

Also have a look on 3D hubs, you’ll be able to find a local company that can print or post your part, or at very least, give you a quote

What do people make of some of the alternative Tudor models? Such as the 1926 (41mm)

Interesting that you’ve received them already. Makes me wish that I had ordered direct but I’m not particularly in a rush. My S10 still seems to be doing okay, just a bit slow after 2 1/2 years so thought I’d treat myself to an upgrade.

Been in contact with ID this morning just to confirm they had my order (my bank thought the payment was fraudulent even though I’m already with them) and ID have said the order is currently as ‘picking’ but its out of their hands. They said they’re either waiting for stock or for DPD to pick it. Showing as in stock on their website.

    – Who did you order through? I pre-ordered through ID mobile (was best option and already with them) on the 19th but not had much of a peep yet. Currently saying availability on the 28th but I’m probably expecting delivery on Friday or early next week.

What kind of questions would you be expecting to ask in an interview for this sort of role / position if you were interviewing?

I tend to ask what brought someone to the role as it’s a good opportunity to learn about someone and can then ask more questions, what projects I may be involved in etc.

    Any others would be appreciated.

    Cheers

Thanks again for all the advice and additioal input. Certainly plenty to go on there. I’ve contacted a couple of staff members via LinkedIn who were graduates of the same university, hopefully they can offer a bit of insite.

There seems to be quite a lot of cross over between all the different job roles mentioned above with some recurring themes which helps to steer my direction of focus.

    @AD

    @fanatic278

    PM’s coming your way.

As a general question, I have quite an interest in FEA, is this something that is used often for materials testing? Assuming it’s a method of simulated destructive testing, seemed to gather some interest for another position I’d interviewed for and that was as a data analyst for a utlities company.

    Thanks again!

Wow, some great advice here and really appreciate everyone who’s commented. There’s an awful lot to take in and some of the terms are familiar as I’ve been doing some research thus far.

The particular noting of the standards is a great bit of info to have and another avenue to look in to. I’ll be sure to read back through all the comments again and those who’ve offered to have a chat via PM, I’ll certainly take you up on that offer, many thanks!

As for the company, it’s relatively small, about 8 – 10 employees according to LinkedIn, my guess would be the interview could be with the founder and another materials engineer.

From previous experience, how does it reflect when you’ve had a bit of a nosey on someone’s LinkedIn? Does it come across as doing research or being a bit nosey?

    Thanks
