I’m just used to arguing with Techs and I know it’s a lost cause 😉

Oh yeah, absolutely. In my understanding, it’s not how the bit of wire is constructed that determines what it’s called, rather how it’s used. Where’s a FofS when you need one?! 🤓

Anyway, OP – it’s a random question, why do you need to know?!

The terms are used interchangeably most of the time as the majority of people are not aware of the difference. But speak to someone who does it professionally and if they’re a bit picky, they may well correct you.

Strictly speaking, an aerial is used to receive  signals; an antenna receives and transmits. In Kja78’s example above, a car’s aerial is known as an aerial because it usually only receives radio signals. However, if it is used to transmit a signal as well the the aerial should be called an antenna. But no one does as people will look at you weird if you start talking about a car’s ‘antenna’.

You’ll be fine. The lower BB will be great fun in corners though get ready for a few more pedal strikes. I’d still aim to upgrade the forks and wheels to 650b at some point though as that’s what the frame’s designed for.

For reference, I’ve got 26ers in a 650b Bird Aeris 1.5 with 160mm 26er forks (same A2C as 150mm 650b forks). BB currently sits just under 330mm and I’ve not yet died.

Poopscoop – just opened it up and found…zero bands. 🤔

Mega, thanks all. Plenty of ideas to have a crack at there.

Mark – thanks for the offer of the puller, I’ll see how I get on repacking them first but if any of the bearings are buggered I may well be in touch!

MJ – possibly, though it feels so peculiar that would have thought it would have been relatively well known if it was just a feature of the suspension design.

Thanks all. Sounds similar to you MH84, though resistance is around 10-20% of travel. I’ll re-check the frame bearings too just in case that’s the source of the resistance.

Strip everything down and start again!

I suspect it might be filled with bands! As soon as I get the chance I’ll have the sleeve off to see. Whilst riding it certainly felt pretty harsh and definitely get near to using all of its travel.

im guessing the initial platform sensation I describe is not normal then?!

Thanks for the response. I followed the RS online manual to a T, partially filling then cycling the shock a few times and it made no difference. And yes, it feels the same no matter what pressure. I’ll give the 50psi at a time technique a go though just to check.

Ive got an air can service kit on order so hopefully that might sort things out.

You probably dont need to upgrade the wheels then – just get a bolt through axle for the Pro2s. It will open up many more options for forks for you and be noticeably stiffer.

If you want to future proof your purchase, get a 650b fork the correct length for the BFe with a bolt theough axle and upgrade the Pro2s.

To be honest, if the frame’s designed for a 650b fork then I’d stick with that. If you run the frame with 26 wheels and a 650b fork, then bb will be lower but angles remain the same. If you try to run a 26inch fork in a 650 frame the bb will be lower because if the wheels (as before) but the head angle will increase and the bb will drop further.

Whatever you get, it’ll be night and day over your QR Fox 32. Just be aware that the vast majority of forks now use through axles (not QR) so you may have to change your front wheel.

Not sure if x fusion claim their forks are 650/26 interchangeable but ive got a set of 2016 Slant HLR designed for 26 but i know i can put a 650 minion in there with loads of clearance and no issues at full compression. At 160mm theyre the same axle to crown as 650b Pikes at 150mm. Only difference is the offset, if you care about that sort of thing.

I think about riding my bike, but generally the closest I get is reading this forum as an 18 month old boy and a house in need of renovation sucks up most of my time.

Taking the dog out for 30 mins with some binos or a camera to spot some birds is my most regular form of relaxation as it grants some solitary respite!

Born and grew up in Chepstow, currently live in Thornbury outside Bristol and have been commuting to the far side of Swindon since last May. The riding is good in Chepstow and the Wye Valley but you prob know that already if you’re from the Forest. Commuting from Bristol has been fine – it’s about 1.15 door to door and I’ve only once hit major traffic jams which is pretty good considering I have to get passed the M4/5 junction and the M32. I’d say coming from Chepstow’s too far even if house prices are a little bit lower than Bristol. That said, personally, I’d rather cut my own arm off than live in Swindon. It just doesn’t strike me as a particularly attractive place unless you have a penchant for stupid roundabouts. Ping me an email if you want any more specific info about Bristol or Chepstow.

I suppose every day’s a school day. I made the mistake of posting a thomson stem to someone on this forum via Hermes and writing ‘MTB Parts’ in the contents box. Surprise surprise, the package ‘has been lost’…

Its taken 3 attempts just to get them to send me a claim form. I won’t be using them again.

I’ve got an Aeris with 26″ wheels / big tyres and the bb’s about 330 which is plenty low enough. Same as the blur tr I had before. They are / we’re very stable and you just get used to riding that low!

Funkydunc – below is the detail from the update on the GoFundMe page.

The increase in target “is on the basis that Mark’s prognosis means he will inevitably need more treatment at some point in the future, so any additional funds can be put towards finding the best possible treatments moving forward. Mark and Meg have always taken one day at a time, never daring to look too far ahead. But these additional funds make it possible to start looking towards the future, and other treatments that may be needed.”

Wow, just wow. I bloody love this forum. Well done everyone, you’re amazing.

Bullheart – my uncle has been fighting cancer for the past few years and has recently been given the news that there’s nothing more to be done, sadly no amount of money can change it for him. However, for you it will make a difference so although you’re already well past the target you’ve got another donation. For yourself, for your family and for my uncle go rip the heart out of that MOFO cancer.

I’ve got 26″ wheels in a bird Aeris. Forks are 26″ but at 160mm they are the same axle to crown as 650b pikes at 150mm so geometry is within design tolerances. BB’s a bit low but it’s fine until I can get the cash to build up some 650b wheels. Whilst the forks will fit the 650b wheels, the offset will be a bit off…but not so much for me to buy new forks!

    Bottom line: you’ll be fine!

I feel bloody exhausted though I suspect it’s to do with leaving the house at 0630, not being back until gone 1900, dealing with a 16 month old, trying to study for a Masters and renovate our house. No exercise, broken sleep and 100 miles a day commute is slowly but surely breaking me. Just got to push through to July when I swap the commute by car to a commute by bike 8 miles each way. Amazing.

The article suggests that means tested state pension would only apply for those with incomes above £30k pa.

    Alpha1653
    Full Member

By the time we reach conventional retirement age (I’m 34) the state pension will almost certainly be (a) means tested and (b) start quite a bit later than age 68/9. You sound like you’re in a pretty good place, so you won’t be eligible anyway.

Why wouldn’t I be eligible for state pension? Because you reckon it’ll be means tested in the future? Maybe my comment about working right up until I die wasn’t so flippant after all.

    Alpha1653
    Full Member

Despite my flippant comments earlier about never stopping working, I do actually have a plan.

35 now and part of a non contributory pension scheme. Apparently, at 65 I’ll get £21k payout plus £7k pa until 68. At 69 I’ll get £14k pa plus £8k pa state pension, so £22k pa. However, I’ve still got 30 odd years to earn more pension. The wife should get £8k pa state around the same time too though her private pension is pretty much non existent. So approx £30k pa between us both as of today with 30 years left to earn more.

By retirement we should be mortgage free and at 31 by then, I’m hoping my son will be financially independent too!

No idea how that stacks up against the norm but I think it’s pretty good (feel free to correct me and explain why I’ll actually be destitute!)

What’s this ‘retirement’ thing you speak of?

(35 now and I fully expect to have to work until I die. Any form of retirement will be a bonus)

I have never, EVER had to deal with a worse company than Carillion. They manage military housing and have an absolutely shocking reputation across the board. Personally, I’m fighting (yet again) for refunds due from their poor administration. Currrently they owe me over £500 for having overcharged me that amount in December for my accommodation yet are refusing to give back my money until the end of the month. I have had to fight them constantly for the last 2 years. Bastards.

It’s harsh for the workers but public money shouldn’t be used to prop up an absolute shambles of an organisation.

I had one of their field automatics as a 30th birthday present to myself. However, despite never wearing it in the shower/bath/pool or even having it in the same room whilst I had a shower, it developed condensation under the glass. I had 3 replacement watches before I demanded my money back and returned to my traser/h3 which is absolutely bulletproof and has been for 17 years.

Lovely looking watch but utter dog toffee. I’d stay clear.

Sat in the kitchen solo with a bottle of whisky for the next hour or so, distracting a dog shit scared of fireworks so she doesn’t bark and wake the baby.

    Happy New Year all*

I once skied in my extreme and sweated my tits off all day. Couldn’t take it off as didn’t have layers and anyway it was way too bulky to fit in my bag. won’t be doing that again.

Now I use a westbeach shell ski jacket I got for about £25 from Sports Direct and a cheap fleece base layer. I’ve also got a small packable insulated jacket in my bag for when the temp really drops. That combo has served me fine for about 5 seasons all skiing around Dec / Jan in the Alps.

So you’re trying to equate a huntsman who breeds hounds with the express intent of hunting foxes, who encourages them to pick up a scent of a fox and chase it, and who encourages the hounds to kill said fox with someone who owns a cat primarily, I’m guessing, for reasons other than catching birds/mice etc? There is quite a clear distinction between the two so I don’t really see your point.

(Second time lucky, I’m retiring from this debate as I have work to do and I really must resist the urge to see what the reply is!)

    Alpha1653

Am I responsible for the cat? Yes. The actions of the cat? Yes. The sorry state of the bird? Yes. For making a decision regarding the most humane course of action to deal with the bird (humane despatch / vets etc)? Yes.

As for keeping the mice population down, I’m pretty sure that’s not the main reason why people keep cats so it’s a moot point. In fact, God knows why people keep cats…

On that note, as fun as this is, I have a work deadline approaching so TTFN.
