You can't beat them Boardmans for value. I was dead cynical when they came out (kit's so good the frame must be sh1t) but now I have one. I was wrong.
Mate's got a full carbon Carerra which is also dead good.
Once you remove the stickers they're twice as good, obviously.

It's the Doddy-worship I can't stand. Last time I bought it he was on nearly every page. He was "dee-jaying" that hippity-hoppity noise on one page.

Do you still have to use the hutchison tubeless road tyres? They have a super-strong bead and i read (on Stan's site I think) that it's the bead that's the thing. Running at 100+ PSI you need a super-strong bead for tubeless.

Oh, and what it's like is Cerebus by Dave Sims if you've ever read that. Started as a joke "Aardvark as Barbarian Warrior" strip, and became a deeply political and emotional commentary on Sims' life as well as history and religion. Sadly disappeared up it's own ar5e, which MS has not done.

Oh, and here's my favourite ever picture of a sheep ever. Taken leaving Newcastleton after SSUK09.

Well that was a good read – thanks for all the strips. Here's the best van I ever saw ever, in Glentress car park. Simon MUST get this. It's just nice is all. Like your pictures you know?

It does you know. Only problem is it gets brittle below zero, and mine smashed over Christmas just before Puffer. Gah! But the very very nice man at Crud Catcher HQ sent me a new one right away 🙂

Well, that was a massive waste of time. Not un-entertaining though. Tried CO2 and ran out, track pump, garden spray (minus spray!), turning the tyre inside-out and leaving it for a bit, putting the tyre in a warm bath to soften it, car tyre via 2 track pump heads on a hose. More soap. More fluid. More of the above. Nope.

This is the first tyre that's defeated me in 3 years – I've had difficult ones but I'm beat this time… I put a tube in!

    FAIL!

I got one too. Before the suspension pivot fell off it was surprisingly good. It's got a Horst link, but they don't sell in USA so no patent fee. It climbs standing very well, and it's fun to chuck about.

Been on the SS for winter and there's a pivot bolt on it's way so looking forward to that.

uplink: Wow! What top-rate bodgery =)

    It MUST be tried.

Also a bloke wrote to me to describe how he'd used a high-pressure road tyre and a wee bit of tube to do much the same. I'll try that first.

Thanks Colin I've done quite a few by now! TP often works but when it doesn't CO2 to the rescue. In this case not even CO2 works. Time to get industrial!

Thanks wwaswas – the tank's the thing then. OK.

Generalisation inviting howls of abuse: Touring bikes are comfortable and not very exciting. Cross bikes are uncomfortable (they are built with huge chainstays for rigidity in 1-hour races) and can be dead exciting.

But if you're "thinking of commuting" then skinnys on your MTB is the first stop. I recommend Conti Sport Contact 26". That's how I started anyway.

Truvativ-specific as folks have said. I have various Truvativ cranks, I've had no problem with most but there's an Elita road SS crank that WILL NOT stay done-up. Drives me mad, and I went back to sq. taper.

    I don't know the 29ers but I've had 3 26" Inbreds and they're long – for 5'8 a 16" is perfect.

    I'll find the thread link…

Bigyinn: You genuinely get 29er rollability without buying very much at all. Also it's just different and fun to play with.

I've owned a 29er Singular Swift which was great – sold to fund another project but I'd have it back. Found it was for non-technical stuff, wonderful on long days out over the hills. The 69er gives you (well, me) a nice compromise.

Best 69er I tried was the Singular Hummingbird at SSUK 09. Borrowed it pissed on the Sat evening, found the little pump track near the campsite and had a ball. Passed it round all our party who all loved it.

The 4569er above was close to as good, and I'm looking forward to giving the Inbred 69er build a proper hammering. 10 mins round the local woods so far and it seems good. Big tyre in the post from CRC. (That's a 29er 2.1" Vapor on there just now).

The saga continues… Rob phoned – they DO have the "pivot kit" in stock and he's ordered one. He's posting it to me so hopefully it doesn't get binned this time…

    Fingers crossed.

16" here too, on Inbreds and 456, they're long. Get a long seatpost. I'm 5'7 and a bit.

Have you ridden one? They're dead good. Big-wheel rollability and flicky too. I find I lose the flickability with a 29er.

Also it's cheap I just had to buy a wheel and tyre.

Spooky. On another thread not far from this one, my favourite spring ride from last year: The 4569er.

    That's RC41s and a 29er wheel. This year it's the Inbred's turn.

Cynic: You're right, but it doesn't matter. 🙂

For example, the Pomp has a crap Suntour suspension fork on to avoid punctures in potholes (it really helps) and that raises the fork crown by several inches, which should make it "totally unrideable". But it's fine. The 29er wheel was on the Pomp so I could run a disc on the front. Everyone thinks it looks really horrible, I love it.

The 4569er you could argue is "meant" for this sort of treatment because it's had angle is for longer forks than the Inbred, but I bet it'll be just fine.

Here's the 4569er from last year:

Why are you measuring to the inside of the dropout? The chain's a good 10mm inside of that.

    Just use a stick.

I just lie a long straight thing along the chainring and if it points at the cog, good. I use a spirit level or a stick, whatever's closest to hand.

Picture below demonstrating that my Pomp 120mm chainline's a bit off. Ah well.

PP: No, those are the bits I'd need to convert to 29. So, if I got half what I need towards the conversion, then ebaying wheels, etc around the garage would make it up.

Sure Peter, I understand! It's hard to say what it would be worth. They're not going to make them again, so if you're a fan then it's a collectible and worth something. It's also a very nice thing.

Then again, it's a used steel frame.

It would be a mistake to ebay it I think…

Current Inbred 29er DN6 price is £153. Only purple or orange, but hey. Wheels at £127/pair. Carbon forks at £125. That's about £400, so I guess I'd hope to make a fair chunk of that.
