One of the things is that policy is written for populations

Experience is down to individual people.

Statins do individuals harm (side effects) but populations good (reduced events and other pleiotropic effects)

Its worth looking up some of the studies if you doubt the effect of statins on populations. A significant number of people are around today because statins prevented an event (or more) that would have seen them die.

I guess there is some comfort in the fact that governments / health systems around the world must be convinced of their value to spend so much money on them – and these are the people who are trained to be able to decide if it is worth it.

Lipitor is the biggest value drug ever in the history of man from a £ perspective.

They are mostly generic now which means that they costs a fraction (20%) of what they used to and are really good value for money interventions.

Of course the Daily mail will have you believe that the side effects are terrible for everybody and they should be withdrawn. (In reality the side effects can be terrible but only a few will have them to the level that it requires withdrawal)

One of the issues of this type of drug is that they don’t appear to do anything for the user, sure a number goes down when they visit the GP but there when they stop an event happening there is no fanfare – patient and doctor never know that an event should have happened!

OP if it is water damage (and it appears so)

See if you can find some of the little packets of silica gel that you get in shoes / electrical equipment.

Find as many as you can of these and put the Garmin in a sealed sandwich bag with them in a warm or sunny place. 3 days later it will be as dry as it is going to get.

Silica gel is much better than rice for this if you can find it (they sell it on Ebay too if you can’t find any)

    HI Rich

I hope the house is coming on nicely.

I know a good bathroom man, Chris Cigan – only does bathrooms

The builder I was mentioning is Mark Bolger

There is a window manufacturer called quik slyde on bradford road – might be worth a look if you need some new ones.

All should be on google, but if you need numbers, let me know!

There is a video outlining the process on the hopetech web site.

I bought some silicone spray from screwfix, but think the non aerosol presentation is probably better.

    Hi Chip

I am no expert, but would guess that the lack of elbow (the bit where the spoke bends through the hole in the hub with a “pip” at the end may make them stronger.

I have just bought some shimano road wheels with straight pull spokes on this basis as the old wheels were pinging spokes frequently at that point –

I am sure someone more knowledgeable will be along in a minute to say that I am wrong!

    Just to balance the above.

I have a five (not ridden a spicey) and love it. It copes with all I can throw at it around Calderdale and was excellent when I took it to lake Garda this year including a day in the proper alps.

Orange are very good with spare parts, so I really don’t think that parts will be an issue for a long time yet.

I also have one for sale in the classifieds, the team Hope one.

(I am only changing it for another, which I guess shows how much I like it!)

Op I see you are in Bolton

I have a lovely team hope orange five which is for sale.

I am in Halifax, so not far away if you want to take a look

If you check my profile and activity it should show you the advert.

Good luck and enjoy it, whatever you get

When people lose find something 100% it’s in the last place they look.

Of course it is, why would you continue looking for something when you have found it?

    This is an interesting topic!

If you ask someone from Public health (they look after populations rather than individuals), they will tell you that sedentary lifestyle is the second biggest killer (to smoking). Being the couch potato seems to be worse than being overweight, but active.

The real issue is the impact on the health of people and therefore their consumption of medical services and the cost of these. Something like 10% of UK NHS budgets go on Diabetes (mostly type 2 – the middle aged sedentary one), but the incidence of diabetes is going to double or more in the next 10 years!

So exercise may not be the (only) answer to being overweight, but it may well prevent disease and cardiovascular events that being overweight expose you to!

I think this has been done a few times!

One of the things I remembered was a concrete filled tyre to use as a dead weight which seemed a good idea.

I guess a useful concept is have a look around and see where the weak spots are (windows / roof etc as they seem to instinctively know!_

You can work this out on a spreadsheet!

Do a sliding scale of cost of fuel for the rough number of miles you do per year, then add in any other costs which may be different between the cars -servicing intervals may be different, road tax etc (keep it simple by not doing the calculations for things which will be the same eg tyres)

You may be surprised to see how little the overall cost is driven by fuel consumption (depreciation is a key factor on total life cost)

I think the length of ownership is key, you would probably need to keep a diesel for 60k miles, which may be 5 years at your rate of mileage.

I have a 320d BMW that has done 49mpg for its first 27k miles since Jun 12 – I think this is pretty good

I am also selling a Porsche 996 turbo that can approach 30 on a run and regularly get 25 mpg – I think this is amazing for a 420bhp car!

I have had several manuals and the present auto.

The manuals were great to drive (although they were older petrol 6 cylinder cars which might have something to do with it)

My present 320 d m sport plus (how long a name?) has the 7 speed manual and is good, but I cant help but think it might have been better to have had a manual. Normal duties it is fine, the odd occasion when you want to make progress, having a manual seems to increase the control and connection you have with the car.

The newer 8 speed auto is another step up from the one I have though!

I may be alone in getting 28k out of my first set of rear tyres on my 2012 320d touring then?

I would echo all the above advice re problems with the diesel engine, they are well documented on forums.

If OP is only doing 10k miles per year I would suggest the petrol is the one to go for as the market depresses any petrol engine car’s value. So cheaper to buy but you wont be doing enough mileage to make the petrol costs a factor in your ownership.

Each of the models is quite a bit better than the last, so if you are on the cusp of a model change, look around for a newer version if you can.

The original wheels are Alexis rims (500) i think and Specialised hubs.

I have changed the ball bearings in the hubs and regreased once.

The bike was about 400 originally so I dont think the Dales Rider option is really going to happen (besides they are out of stock :D

I had an issue like this and got them moved (free) as the cables / gas and water were not at the required depth.

(I think it was roughly a spade and a half depth)

They do take their time though!

The electricity cable was the most interesting as they spliced a bit in with the whole system live (very thick rubber gloves and wellies were worn!)

I have just bought a TV for my son from ebuyer.

I cant seem to find any reviews on it but a 32 inch / smart / 1080p / 3d tv for £219 seems to be a bargain!

Maybe the 5000 lumens claim relates to the amount of light they give off when they go bang?

I was trying to be helpful!

I would want to look underneath to see if there was any evidence of off roading (unlikely)

Tyres check for any damage as they will be expensive to replace – also look for any possible tracking issues – heavy things like this can ruin a tyre very quickly.

I believe one of the issues is the self levelling suspension – expensive to replace so do any checks you can on function and listen out for any odd noises.

    Buy a warranty!

I would suggest that she keeps her present car so that she can get around when the RR sport is at the garage / broken down.

My wife would like one too, but I have put my foot down as I have heard many tales of woe with them.

-to give you an idea of their reputation a local car trader I know was going down to France for a holiday. He was running a RR sport and considered taking a stock (non RR sport) car instead as he was concerned about it making the journey there and back!

I am sure more specific advice will be along in a minute, but I would be very wary.

    Interesting read here.

I have a 12 year old and we frequently have conversations around the fact that all his friends can play 18 games, so why can’t he.

I tell him that because I know what the games have in them, whereas a lot of parents don’t.

It is difficult when he goes to other boys houses as I don’t want him to be ostracised from the group because of the games.

It sounds like most of you all do pretty similar things!

I have one from Redlog that came as a replacement for one with a dodgy end cap.

I was going to put it on Ebay, but would be happy to send you it for £20

It has 1600 (Chinese) lumens and 2 batteries and a charger.

It is focusable from wide to incredibly long and far!

If you are at all interested I could probably find the original advert with specs etc?

    Hi Ed,

Best of luck in getting them back. I have shared on twitter.

This is worrying me as I live in Hipperholme too.

How do you think they knew that there were nice bikes in the shed, is this one of the Strava thefts we hear of?

I found some reasonably priced stuff at Sportsdirect.

I bought my 8 year old daughter some long cycling tights and a waterproof(ish) jacket from Muddy fox for her.

It seemed to perform well at its first outing at Citycross in Halifax with long periods of rain and waiting about before and after her race.

They seem to have interesting RRPs on the muddy fox stuff, but the quality is OK

I saw this and had a think, how can this possibly work?

As the energy from burning 4 tea lights is quite small, no matter how effective at spreading the heat the terracotta pots are, then the whole thing is doomed?

From the above posts it seems to be not very effective.

The race of Champions at the end of the year is always interesting to see how the different drivers do from F1 / rallying.

If memory serves the rally drivers tend to do very well, even compared to the F1 guys on a track.

I guess it takes a special precision and skill to drive an F1 car, but the rally drivers have a broader range of skill with the car sliding?
