no idea what settings need to change.

However… if you want to post your friend a message, and you don't want everyone else to be able to read it; i'd suggest you try email.

if you still want to use facebook, try sending a private message.

Thanks so far guys, some nice stuff coming through. I've followed a few links, and I like what I see so far.

Quite fancying innerhaven… never been on any guided riding, but it could be perfect for the situation (so we don't argue about where we are going ;) )

Lou is keen on doing some island hopping; maybe renting a cottage somewhere ridiculously remote.. Is this feasible within our timescale? I don't want spend half the time driving!

Anyone got any hotel ideas in Edinburgh?

Yeah, I can't complain really… Did I mention I'm going to get a new bike in time for the wedding? Can't spend all that money on a wedding without splashing out on a new shiny bike ;)

All sorts of riding would be great.

I've never done any of the fabled stanes, so will probably give some of those a go. Definitely not averse to map reading, but don't want too much faff, as we'll be too busy gazing in to each others eyes to watch where we are going <vomit>

My legs were knackered yesterday, both on the way in and riding back through the teeth of the gale in the evening.

When I woke up this morning and the wind was even stronger, I chickened out and got the train

We had a great wobble this year… partly aided by the fact that we left well before everyone else.

We got bored of the usual hour long period of standing around in the rain with the announcement bloke droning on; so we just set off. Saw about 20-30 other riders all day… the pack never caught us up.

Beer and music in the evening were as good as ever.. even if the uber salty hog roast did make me gag slightly!

interest – doing something because you want to find out about it?

boredom – doing something to fill the time?

Did you actually witness a medical professional telling her not to be in the room with the steamer?

Not that I'm suspicious or anything, but it sounds like the best excuse ever on her part!

As for advice on removing the bloody stuff, get yourself one of the long handled scrapers with replacable blades – wickes sell them… much sharper and heavier duty than the standard ones and will get a lot more off. Failing that, I quite often chisel the plaster off and replaster… less ball-ache in the long run!

my basic wickes security light can be set into 'permanent on' mode using the light switch.

you just turn it off and straight back on again – presumably it has a capacitor to sense you doing this – it will now stay on until you turn it off at the switch, wait a while and turn back on.

    good story.

however, what always winds me up about these stories is the hypocrisy they invariably contain once the 'developed world' gets involved.

Self-taught William Kamkwamba has been feted by climate change campaigners like Al Gore and business leaders the world over.

Mr Kamkwamba – who has been flown to conferences around the globe to recount his life-story – has the world at his feet

Very environmental  lets take a guy who wanted to help his village in an environmental way, and we'll turn him from a potential solution, into part of the problem!

I understand that the few examples of sustainability we come across need be shown to the world so they will take notice, but ffs, why does he have to fly everywhere? Haven't they heard of video conferencing?

Fair play to the man himself, good effort!.

There were lots of those decathlon FR-6 bikes out in the alps this year… looked pretty well screwed together.

as a base bike they'd be a 'good' cheap option. Wheels, shock and fork could always be upgraded if there was still money in the budget!

I ride my blizzard for just about everything in the UK; I have a 575, which I am thinking of giving to my fiancee. I was feeling a bit limited by it in the alps this year (mostly the front end), and she was definitely limited by riding her sc juliana.

Giving her the 575 will be plenty of bike for her (she weighs a lot less than me, and isn't quite so gung ho YET). It also gives me the opportunity to buy a new shiny bike, which should never be passed up.

nomad 2, intense tracer (or uzzi??), alpine 160.. all in consideration – but nowhere near the phwoooar factor of the asr-7.

Series 4 was the best, 5 disappointed me a bit.

Just started watching Spiral on telly (bbc4?)… supposed to be like a French version of the Wire. Only watched one episode (season 2 ep 1), but so far so good!

I had a quote from indespension, but in the end I bought it and arranged fitting from PF Jones[/url].

It was about £50 cheaper than indespension, and the contracted out fitter was…. you've guessed it… indespension.

Even better, indespension said they couldn't do it for 3 weeks… booking it through PF Jones, they did it that weekend!

Well you obviously don't cycle anywhere within one hour's drive from Croydon then

I keep meaning to go and join in on one of the addiscombe club runs, especially considering that I actually do live in addiscombe! I always seem to be away biking or busy, so haven't got around to it.

I ride on the north downs a lot.. I do a lot of evening rides from Reigate Hill… but I've never seen anyone fitting the descriptions above.

    Beef Wellington :o)

(a.k.a. filet de boeuf en croute, but that name not so popular in Napoleonic times)

Pretty easy to make (if you use packet pastry – which even my mum uses now!), and bloody lush!

We stop in the aires by the autoroute… chuck a decathlon 2 second tent up, and kip next to the car :o)

Sanef (the autoroute company), and the police have no problem with this – I have chatted to both while pitching tents in the past. They even have signs on the entrance the the aire saying 'max stay 48hrs'

If you want to do it on the cheap, don't go to Morzine/Les Gets.

Go to one of the hundreds of other resort towns; you will find lots of them cater very well for mountain bikers, and because they are not so 'popular', they have far cheaper lift prices, thousands less people and no stutter/braking bumps!

We spent a week in Valloire this year, after a week in La Clusaz and Morzine. Valloire had the best riding (XC and Downhill), the nicest atmosphere (so few English that we actually felt like we were in France!) and the cheapest lifts.

Want it cheaper? Don't follow the herd!

Oh, and drive down and camp, with as many people as possible in the car.
