I’m considering the iphone 3 whenever it comes out, but the clincher to stick where I am is offline OS mapping through Memory Map on Windows Mobile devices. Once that’s on the iphone, I’m converted.

thepodge – sorry for the late response, but it’s definitely him.

Facebook conveniently lets you search for people by their email address, and this Michael McMahon has a photo of someone riding a jump bike as their avatar.

thepodge – Michael McMahon is from or in Leicester according to his Facebook profile – join it just to send him a message, perhaps with the threat of emailing all his friends exposing him.

The thing about owning armour is that you really need it on the days you don’t wear it.

I’ve got a hole in a shin that hasn’t healed over after nearly two months, oops.

The 54mbps is by no means the actual speed you’ll get, it’s the theoretical maximum, so your router will always be the limiting factor.

I use a Netgear MIMO router that runs at 108mbps max, and have found it perfect for a combination of PC, laptop, Wii and PDA.

I reckon 13 on very busy roads/dual carriageways is a bit young, purely because he won’t have the same level of road awareness as an adult and won’t be sufficiently experienced in anticipating the movement of car drivers.

However, quiet roads or mountain biking, 13 is definitely old enough. You can get a paper round at 14 and you don’t see their parents driving them around in case something happens.

Set ground rules, i.e. always carry a phone and stay off A roads, but then let him do his own thing and learn from his mistakes.

Steve-Austin – retailers will perhaps sell items in a sale at a loss as it frees up cashflow. Far better to have working capital than a box of kit that is never going to sell.

Anything on a drivetrain is definitely a consumable item. Are there any uses for bike chains when they expire, other than funky belts and bottle openers?

I loved that wall, it was one of the most fun parts of the trail and now it just looks pish.

Intentional ignorance annoys me, especially from those people who treat you as if you’re something different because you choose to keep up to date with current affairs.

That said, I’m intently watching the swine flu story unfold as I’m off to Mexico at the end of next month. Oops.

Without wishing to discount the obvious failures apparent here, how many people own i-beam saddles/posts that have not failed? I do, and I’ve bent two saddles and a post before I got an i-beam and it’s been fine for well over a year.

Saying there are 8 failures in a single thread on a forum does not mean that a product is inherently faulty, what you really need to see is the percentage failure rate in context. If there were only 16 posts sold in total, this would be a 50% fail, but if there were 16,000 then this drops down to 0.05%.

Most people will only ever complain about products and not praise them when asked so any complaints on an internet forum will not necessarily be a true reflection of a product’s quality.

I will of course retract the above when I tear myself a new a-hole if mine breaks ;-)

I’ve been thinking similar, how to get a longer travel hardtail than my current one using the bare minimum of purchased parts.

Then there’s the roadie I’ve been considering for the last few weeks…

I love Golspie, I rode it last year a couple of times in similar weather. It takes trail centre descents to a whole new level and is one of the few climbs I’ve actually enjoyed. I’m jealous…

Druidh – is that the Glencorse road? I’d much rather some signs than the boy racers in their Novas parking up on a sunny day and littering the place.

are they scratches or just where the stanchions have rubbed? If scratches, you can clean them up using Wet and Dry and clear nail varnish.

If it’s just for a backup, why has no-one mentioned the Tesco torch? £8 and easily good enough to get you home if your main/expensive light fails.

I’ve got a Vario III as well, and think it’s excellent. The software you get on the phone (Windows Mobile 6.0) is really slow, it works better when you flash it to 6.1 or a beta of 6.5. Both are a lot faster, but 6.5 is a bit buggy at present. The upshot of 6.5 is that the camera finally starts working well, although it gets better if you get a decent 6.1 build.

And yeah, Memory Map runs on Windows Mobile 5.0 and upwards. Installation takes seconds, it’s just copying the maps to SD card that takes an age.

yeah I’m sure, go into the archive, then 2002 or 2003 and you’ll find it under tech specs. There wasn’t an A1 Rockhopper in 03, but there was in 02.

Park and Ride at Sheriffhall then bus it in. Alternatively, just park in the suburbs and then walk in. Are you coming in on a weekday or weekend?

Woke up to day 2 of my stag.

    Got breakfast, still drunk
    Went quad biking, still drunk
Halfway through quads, sobered up into my hangover.
Clay pigeon shooting (15/25 on my first go)
    Fewer pints

    Bed now.

I had £200 taken out of one bank account, and the same taken from my credit card. The only company that had access to both details was an online record store, which I will never use again.

Nice tunes though, and good value too.

Unsure if these unthreaded BBs are any good, but it’d be a last resort if it’s completely goosed.

That said, Argos will do you a new BB shell if it’s even worse and the frame is worth it

    Money laundering paranoia perhaps?

You mention paying cash then returning funds via debit card, which immediately turns your ill-gotten cash into a legitimate credit into your bank account.

I work in a bank, hence my mind works in that way…

EDIT – alternatively they may just want to report the income in a particular month.

I got a Nevis free with mbr years ago, and it lasted 7 minutes of rain on its first day before I got wet. It’s very boil in the bag and the waterproof zip broke so I’ve had to peel it back.

It rarely gets worn these days, I either wear a softshell or my eVent jacket if it’s truly chucking it down.

I’ve had a T-Mobile MDA Vario III for the last 18 months and it’s been faultless. The initial software on it was a bit slow, but I’ve downloaded the most recent version of Windows Mobile and it now runs really quickly. I wouldn’t go back to a phone without a QWERTY keyboard.

MDA Vario IV is out now, not much different other than it looking nicer.

Olly – you failed to mention the triple clamps, and the rack that will bounce off the stoker’s seatpack if loaded on the top.

    A new STW niche?
